Alternator making noise in counterclockwise direction when using plastic as lever but not when groove surface is used to apply movement.

Replacing water pump on my MY04 C4S. After removing belt I did the recommended check of pulley play. All normal and quiet in passive movement except power steering pump was making noises in both directions. ?Should this be noiseless passively? Alternator making noise in counterclockwise direction when using plastic as lever but not when groove surface is used to apply movement. All discussions I have read talk about noises under load not passive. Are these something I need to address. No drivability problems at all btw. I will continue on the replacement of the WP and check back to see if anybody has any ideas. Poor man with Rich car
