Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
In my 2003 you have to remove the top (in this case CD tray) unit to be able to remove and replace the bottom one.
Leading evidence: 'Replace bottom one' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace bottom one' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My new(to me) 996 C4 had nothing in the two separate little compartments just beneath the radio but a thin rubberized mat in each. I noticed most cars had either a cassette holder or the 4 cd tray accessory. I bought one of those cd tray accessories, removed the rubber mat but the tray didn't want to just slip into place and I didn't want to force or damage so I am asking for help. The cd tray I bought was on Ebay and from a 1999 996 so I didn't expect there to be a problem with install? Does that console have to be dis-assembled in order for the tray to be installed?
Nope, use an old credit card along the top of the unit you wish to use to release the tabs and pull it out. Once you have done it a couple of times its a 5 sec job.
In my 2003 you have to remove the top (in this case CD tray) unit to be able to remove and replace the bottom one. Other wise they just snap in and out. The bottom one has a "bump" on top of it with a slot that catches a bar inside the console to stabilize it. When the top one snaps in the lip captures that "bump".
Which cubby are you replacing? If the top one how much do you want for it? I have a CD changer in mine and I don't use the CD tray. A second cubby would be more useful for me.
Maybe I am not explaining this correctly. I don't want to remove a cubby hole, I want to fill one with the 4 cd tray that I bought. Do the "cubby holes" actually come out and then I can slide the tray in ?
FYI
There is a source for switched and unswitched power behind the CD/cubby. It is the phone connector. If you have a phone of course it won't be available.
Brownish color flat 4 socket connector, Brown = ground, Yellow/Black - phone (radio) mute, Green/Black = switched 12V, Red/Green = unswitched 12V.
