Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I placed it on jack stands at the on the furthest aft point on the ramp and used a hydraulic table.
Leading evidence: 'Use hydraulic table' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use hydraulic lift table' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Another option is to use a hydraulic lift table to lower it onto and then drag it aft like you would without a lift.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'd been planning to drop the engine on my 40 AE for some work. I was going to jack it up on the floor as I didn't think there was any chance of getting it out with a 4 post lift. I had it on the lift to remove and disconnect as much as possible, then was going to push the car onto the floor. However when it was on the lift it looked like it wouldn't take much to get it out, as I only needed about another inch of clearance.
I could have probably removed the cam covers and maybe it would have worked, but I wasn't really keen on that idea, so out with the cutter, it needed around 3/4 inch either side, and it worked perfectly. You can see in the pic the mod to the lift rails.
Glad it worked out, and very creative solution.
Id personally be hesitant to remove material from the rails of my lift, but thats just me. And the runways on my four post lift are far enough apart that I cant drop the engine out without invasive lift surgery.
I have done it countless times with Ferrari and Porsches without cutting up the lift. Push the car back and let it hang over the back of the lift. Unbolt the engine and let it rest on dolly or RTV jack. Lift the car up, roll the engine out. For you nervous type, you can tie the front wheel down to the lift as a precaution but I never needed it.
This ^^^^
I placed it on jack stands at the on the furthest aft point on the ramp and used a hydraulic table. Much easier without the ramps in the way.
Does anyone know the width of the M96 between its furthest points on the cylinder heads? (Without exhaust and brackets)
I am considering a 4 post lift for storage and want to see if I can get by with using it for maintenance and dropping the engine if needed. It seems to have a 42 width between the rails.
Does anyone have any vidoe's on how they removed the engine with a four post lift? I have been searching and can't find any. I have 39" clear between tracks, but would love to see how others have done it.
With that G-body Carrera, I would just drop its engine off with the car on the ground, two jacks, one dolly method. Two hours top. It's quite easy that way.
Starting with the 964, the engine is dropped on the 4-post lift by hanging the engine over the rear of the lift. The 993 suspension makes that a bit harder by having to put the cross-member back in to correct for the extreme camber/toe/caster
The 996 and 997 do not need the cross-member put back and are quite easy to do on the 4-post lift, a number of jacks, a strong moving dolly and an extra pair of hands/eyes. A 2-post lift would be better but
you can't always get what you want
.
Safety features: 4-post lift is anchored to the ground. Front wheel (1) is tied to the lift runner when it is in the overhanging position. Next time I do a 996, I will make a video for you.
Quick question for this thread. On 996, of dropping the transmission, is it safe to leave engine on its normal engine mounts (loosened) and on the AGA engine support. The one that bolts into the location where rear sway bar bolts.
plan to leave it up for a number of weeks while working on transmission. Can it hold the weight or is that a mistake?
