Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause

Reported cause
Mine was like that a while back...mine turned out to be the PS pulley/pump
Leading evidence: 'ps pulley/pump' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'ps pulley/pump' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check belt itself....then the pulleys....ps?wp' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Changed the serpentine belt again for good measure since it was off anyway.

belt's very loud....id start with checking the belt itself....then the pulleys....PS?WP?

I had my other pulleys and serpentine belt changes previously at 60k service (now at 89.5k)
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A couple of months ago I noted that my 2002 C4 was developing a fairly audible whine. It occurs at startup and at higher revs. It's not related to movement or clutch position. I've had the LNE upgrade in place for about 10K miles, the car has 67K miles on it altogether. Below is a YouTube video; the whine is especially audible at the end. Any ideas, RLers?
Thanks,

... and mine was initially diagnosed as the Power Steering pump pulley, but actually ended up being the Alternator pulley. This occurred at 85k. Changed the serpentine belt again for good measure since it was off anyway.

The dealer has identified the whine as coming from what he terms a "secondary air pump" that warms up the catalytic converter at startup. The part number is 996-605-104-00. He lists OEM as $1788 and I priced it at Pelican for $1666, and the part is available from Bosch at $632. Of course add a couple Benjamins for labor and it's still quite a bill.
According to the dealer, this air pump is noisy but still functioning, and even if it quits it will probably only generate a CEL while the engine is cold. The only other downside of the eventual failure is that fuel economy may be slightly compromised.
It sounds like a lot for a souped-up fan that is only needed when the exhaust is cold. I can definitely stand the noise now that I know (believe?) that no harm will come from ignoring it. Has anyone had to replace this or had this scenario? Has anyone removed this as part of an exhaust mod?
My air pump makes a similar sound. There were a few comments on another forum that it might be fixable by taking the pump out and blowing it out with an air compressor. I was planning on trying it this winter.
Mine is in the same boat. Whine on startup. Sounds sort of like a table saw. Goes away after about 2 minutes (interestingly, it usually kicks back on for ~30 seconds after the engine is up to temp). With my luck, it will give up the ghost right before an annual emissions check.
Replacement $$$ is obscene (labor should be <0.5 hour, it's plug-and-play and easy access).
What doesn't make sense for your situation is that it should be independent of revs. High rev should not induce the pump to turn on (almost the opposite, actually).
