I used a sharp knife to separate them from the old pads while they where still in the caliper.

Suggestion

I know everyone is saying to use the right brakes but I don't think the pins make a difference in the fit.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm doing my first brake job on a 2002 911 C4S. When I removed the front pads each pad has two metal studs/pins facing inward towards the caliper. The pads I ordered do not have the pins. When I looked online, I noticed that some manufacture the pads with the pins and some do not. Am I missing something. Question: 1. Do I need the pad with the pins? 2. Is one style superior/recommended to the other? Thanks.

POST 2Original post

No, you don't. My guess is the pins/studs are there for damping vibrations (to elminate brake squealing).

POST 3Original post

having learned this the hard way. the pads need to be the same as the ones used on the turbo, the c4s has the exact same suspension and brakes as the turbo.

POST 4Original post

Looks like you have the wrong pads. Get the ones with the pins. I did my own brakes on my 2003 C4S (after watching Van's awesome videos) - and those pads are not the correct ones.

POST 5Original post

just buy them from suncoast website, good price and you will find the right one easily on their website

POST 6Original post

Agree with the others about getting the right pads. I just did mine and found Suncoast to have the best price for OEM pads. Also I just reused the old vibration dampers. I used a sharp knife to separate them from the old pads while they where still in the caliper. Just slipped out the old pads and put the new ones in. Seems like there was enough sticky goo left on the old dampers (front and back) to stick to the new pads. I guess they work because my pads aren't squealing yet.

DITTO... I did find that I had to remove the caliper in order to release more pressure on the old pads for removal of the old pads. Only then could I fit the new pads in place. Plus new brake warning wire and old vibration dampers.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you guys. I ended up going directly to Porsche and found out that the ears on the 4s pads and Turbo as well, have counterweights that are designed for the upgraded calipers and rotors. So in the end, I absolutely needed the correct ones. Thank you all.

U Da Man Van! Your vids have saved me mucho.

POST 12Original post

I know everyone is saying to use the right brakes but I don't think the pins make a difference in the fit. I have a pair of EBC pads that have those pins, then I have Porsche Motorsports pads for the track without those pins. They both drop right in without any issues. Yes make sure you have the right brakes but those little pins shouldn't affect fit.

POST 13Original post

I bought Hawk pads and they had the pins. I hate OEM pads... way too much dust and not so good that they are worth the trouble. BMW is the same way. I think the Germans choose performance over inconvenience without the realization that you can have both.

POST 14Original post

I just did my front brakes this weekend .. Removed oem rotors and replaced with sebro. The old pads were brembo with vibration dampers .. But also marked with textar part number. I had the textar replacement pads from pelican .. Also with dampers .. Exact same part number as on the brembos .. Perfect fit .. 2002 c2 targa

POST 15Original post

those pins don't make a difference except add weight IMHO.
