Suggestion
Until the engine has been given a clean bill of health any run time is risky due to the chances the noise is something serious.
Leading evidence: 'Clean bill of health any' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean bill of health any' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
In your case, since the noise just started, before running the motor again, I would pull the oil filter and check it for metallic debris to make sure its not a major failure that is causing the problem.

Using a stethoscope I was able to hear the noise more clearly in the bank 1-3 tensioner, which I replaced with no improvement.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What would the probable suspects be for a half-second mechanical rattle from the engine on startup... chain tensioners?
- MY02 Carrera 2 with 55K miles. 700 miles since last oil change (Castrol 5-40)
- Rattle occurs if the the engine is hot or cold.
- Not the normal ticking from lifters
- Just noticed it today, prompting a colleague to mention he heard it about a week ago. So I'm not sure how long it's been going on, but the engine is still pulling strong.
Can't get it checked out till next Thursday (short staffed at only reputable service location), so I'm thinking of subjecting it to startup to get it home and startup to get it to the dealership... risky?
Thanks!
Joe
Many 9X6 owners report a 1/2 second rattle on start up, mine does it hot or cold. The general consensus seems to be that it normal.
Some say its the tensioners. Using a stethoscope I was able to hear the noise more clearly in the bank 1-3 tensioner, which I replaced with no improvement. Others say its valve lifter clatter. I've learned to live with it.

No offense man but I am baffled by how paranoid so many people are on this forum
A half second rattle? Really?
Hope it really isn't anything but man if I worried so much about my car I'd have a stroke or heart attack.
The fact the engine is not exhibiting any signs of trouble, the brief startup rattle is I believe nothing to be alarmed about.
However, I'm not a professional mechanic.
The noise arises from the long runs of chain that rub against their respective tensioner guide rails which can make a sound like a chain being dragged over a piece of wood for a moment or two upon startup.
It takes a brief moment or two for oil pressure to build the chain tensioners and for these then to take up the chain tension.
However, better safe than sorry so I like your idea of having the car checked out by a reputable shop.
Until the engine has been given a clean bill of health any run time is risky due to the chances the noise is something serious.
It may seem to be overkill but my advice is, and what I have done in similar circumstances, is when in doubt flat bed the car in rather than drive it.
Sincerely,
Macster.
No offense taken... It's a new noise and noticeable. I'm not experienced enough to confidently decipher between normal and pre-catastrophic. A search on previous threads indicated tensioners, but it wasn't definitive to me, so I thought I'd throw a quick post out there. We have some very experienced and generous forum members that share their wealth of knowledge for free, so I thought I'd tap into that before jumping any conclusions. While it's probably nothing, a quick discussion here may make the difference in the unlikely event that it is something major.
Thanks for the suggestion San.
Thanks Macster... always appreciate your responses.
I'll probably take the car home tonight and pull the filter to have a look. If it's metal free, I'll drive it to the shop. If there's metal, flat-bed it is...
While I do the majority of work on my car, my very experienced professional Porsche mechanic friend tackles the really big stuff. Anyway, my car has done the same thing for years, and it has 139,000 daily driven miles on it. I've brought it up to him, and he's well aware of it - says it's harmless. It's as Macster described it. Interestingly, he mentioned that the oil pressure bleed down that causes that can be rectified by swapping out (something, whatever it was) for the newer design that the 997 uses, but he also mentioned that it would simply make ME feel better, and probably wasn't worth the expense of swapping it out.
Thanks Jake, I was hoping you'd chime in. Now if I would just find time to install my IMS Guardian, I'd probably already know if there's any metal in my oil!!!
My car started doing that about six months ago
. It startled me at first, but I noticed that it only did it if the car had been sitting for more than a couple of days
