Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

It does not appear clutch related or drivetrain related as I used that pedal and there is no difference.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is new, rather unpleasant sound. I have this "syncopated clanking" sound that I'd like to get some insight into before I get her flatbedded. It happens after the car has warmed a bit. Not at start-up. It does not appear clutch related or drivetrain related as I used that pedal and there is no difference. You can only hear it at idle, though it does not appear to slow (after lifting throttle). It is probably there at above 800 RPM, but the engine is louder. http://youtu.be/BQH5Eds99zQ No CEL. No noticeable difference in idling, or accelerating. I pulled the filter, and housing, no sparkle kisses of death. Oil is changed every 5K, no known issues in last 15K of ownership. 74K total miles. It has a LWFW, but that rattle (once warm) goes away when clutch is engaged (at idle), and it's a different rattle. Thanks for any insight.

POST 2Original post

What are you seeing for timing when cold and once warmed up?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I can't... don't have a way to see it. Is the Durametric tool the only way?

POST 4Original post

Hello. I had a very loud noise recently which luckily turned out to be the mounting bracket the secures the cats onto the engine. It had cracked right through causing a loud chattering sound as the engine vibrated. Hard to see unless you are right up close to it. It was at the point where the clamp ties the bracket to the cat itself. Needless to say after a quick weld from my local Porsche specialist all is now fine. May not be for you but fingers crossed its something easy to Fix.

Here is the link to my video. Quite noisy. :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiC2...e_gdata_player

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

sounds similar... I hope it's the same deal. Thanks!

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For those of you playing at home... we have a winner. Expired Cat on the driver side.

POST 8Original post

Thanks for updating. So will you qualify to have a free replacement? Or all out of your own pocket? Over here in the UK, replacement cats are expensive and no government initiative for free replacements within a specific period. Glad to hear it was quickly diagnosed and relatively simple fix.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I will try to get it under warranty first... I think I am inside (awfully close) 8yr. 80K which is the limit. I am at 74K miles, but 8Yr maybe the hurdle. I don't have the manual in front of me, but googling brought up those time periods.

POST 10Original post

Congrats.....still probably cheaper than most any other reason.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

nope... 7 months out of luck. She was "put into service" 3/2004. Looks like another opportunity to upgrade in the near future
