Suggestion
I've always driven manuals on the street and track, but when I test drove the PDK was very impressed.

Or I might go the other way around and purchase something older to use only on the track.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

In a year or so I am thinking about my next Porsche purchase...
I have a 996 C4 Cabriolet, what do you think is the next logical step?
997 C4S? 996 Turbo? Cayman R? Or hold out for a 991 Turbo to be reasonably priced?
I have a C4 as well and am also looking to upgrade next year. For me it's a 2009 or newer. Debating between the 3.6 and 3.8 models. Part of me wants to experience a 2 wheel drive model.
My next purchase will probably be in about 1 1/2 years from now and I am leaning toward a 2009 997 or possibly a 981. I never even considered a boxter in the past but the new model changed that.
Hard to say. With two kids in college, it will be a while for me.
Ordering a brand new Porsche from the factory has always been on my "bucket list". Maybe I'll get that chance in 5 years or so. I'm thinking of getting a cabriolet for my next one - perhaps a C4S cab...
I have been drooling over a GT3/GT3RS for some time now. I hope to be ready in about 5 years, as I have plenty to go with my current C2 (which I still love to death). This will also give plenty of time for the "must have the latest/bestus" crowd to switch to the new 991GT3/RS' due out in a year or two. This will give plenty of time to monitor the new setup (engine, PDK?) and decide on which gen 2 (GT3/GT3RS) vehicle to buy. I have been studying the pricing for a while and the gen 2' should take a decent hit once the new 991 debuts....that's the plan anyhow.
Good question, I hanker for a GT3 997, but not sure I could live with it day to day. I'd like my wife to drive my car more, but after a few stalls at lights she won't drive mine, so maybe a 997 S or Turbo with PDK.
What's the collective view on PDK?, I drove one, it was good but I wasn't convinced over a manual
PDK offers lots of advantages:
1.If you track your car you'll get better lap times with PDK because of shifting speed. F1 cars don't have them just because they look pretty.
2. If you buy a used Porsche with a manual tranny it's very likely that you'll have an engine which has some hits in range 4. So then you have to make a decision if you want a car with an engine that has been stressed to near catastophic failure. Although I've seen cars with PDK have hits in range 1, it's impossible to have hits in range 3 or higher, at least I can't see how that's possible.
3. With PDK you have the option of running it in autmatic mode in stop and go traffic.
Disadvantages:
1. The biggest disadvantage is price: PDK will set you back over $3K if you buy new. Of course it will cost you a lot less if you buy used since PDK like any other option depreciates significantly.
2. If you have been driving a manual for many years, you may get bored.
I wouldn't be surprised if Porsche doesn't even offer cars with clutch pedals in about 5 years. If you do a search on the 981 launch cars, you'll find that almost 100% of them were equipped with PDK.
How the hell is it they are so cheap in the UK?
Second question: can anyone say if you do a mod like the Fister D, since the PSE option is hard to find, are you going to have issues with the dealer regarding the CPO warranty coverage?
Man I'm dying to get into a 3.8 GT3. when my warranty expires I'll be on the hunt for either a white or black car. I'll gladly sacrifice comfort for track performance. Besides I use a chevy pickup for daily driving.
Because petrol and tax is so expensive. It has become popular to buy smaller engine cars that have a better mpg
Check out this one.

I would love to get an aircooled on to complement my "collection" of 1 so far!
I am surprised I am the only one going backwards in time towards air cooled, and everyone else is thinking 997 991 etc.... I wouldn't mind those either, but I have always loved the older ones too - even though I will lose HP/TQ and not to mention cash.
Stupid question - but the people above release they are speaking in English Pounds and not US Dollars right? There is a difference in value between the currencies - just checking to regain my sanity - sorry if this is already understood.
My wish list (in order) is:
993
964
I would be willing to take a 911SC too.... I'm not ALL that picky!
Great topic!
First off, my next 911 will be a) more modern than the '99 I'm rocking now, and b) will have the full leather option. That said, I'm torn between a 996 Turbo ('04 ish,) vs. a newer 997. I'd love a GT3, but need a backseat for the forseeable future.
@sovery, I just saw a Panamera 4S yesterday, didn't even know they were making them in the 4 series. Makes sense, but had never seen one or heard of one until yesterday.
Still having too much fun with the 996TT.
The 991 doesn't really do anything for me right now. I would say 997.2TT cab MT, but I already make as much power just with a simple tune, and can go much farther if I want. I have a number of upgrades planned for the interior, exhaust, and wheels (about 12K worth). So I can't see any advantage to spending an extra 40-50K for better looking headlights.
I may change my mind one day, but right now I plan to keep it until the wheels fall off.
Turbo cab for me. Either 996 or 997, depending on which I can swing at the time.
On another note: I test drove a Panamera Turbo S recently. OMG!! I couldn't believe the power. Fastest thing I've ever driven. One of those will definitely be in my garage at some time.
Reading the WSJ review I'd agree if we were not a family of 5 (only a 4 seater)
I loved the quote " No, this car is all about those rare moments of on-ramp impunity. The GTS's deep-socketed sport seats hold you in place as the lateral acceleration tries to squeeze you out the window."
My next car a 959....in my dreams.
I was very happy with my '99 C2 Cab and often after a spirited canyon drive I felt that it couldn't get any better. Now with my '04 Turbo Cab, I feel the same. It can't get any better. The Turbo isn't really any more satisfying than the N/A it's just different as I'm always on boost between turns and the distance seems compressed and cornering speeds seem higher. It's about what you can do with your tool, the car and pushing it near it's limit.
I'm thinking my next may be a 904 or 550 Spyder replica that I'd build. I build custom motorcycles for a living and have since the '70s. I think I could do a pretty bang up job on a replica, much better than the somewhat tacky stuff that's out there currently.
I'm with ya!
I sold my 83SC to get my C4s. I miss my air cooled a lot.
I'm thinking of getting a 912 and doing a full "resto" and having a Type 4 built by Jake Raby to put in.
The newer cars are nice but I just don't enjoy driving them in the same way I do the older ones.
If all works put I can keep my 996 and just ad on the 912.
Very cool thread, it's always a good feeling thinking/dreaming of what's next.
For me, it's either a 997 Turbo or 4S but realistically it won't be a Porsche, it will be a 2009 white Vantage!
I'm giving some serious thought to moving to the Cayman family. I love the looks/design, the performance is nearly equal or better than the 911, and on the track they're animals. Put all of that together with the improved reliability of the 09 and new models and it's a compelling story for me.
The PDK question also comes into play. I've always driven manuals on the street and track, but when I test drove the PDK was very impressed. It's the first automated transmission that did exactly what I wanted when it I wanted it, and much faster than I possibly could have. On the track I understand it's borderline amazing.
Hmmm... after the progression from a 930s to a an 87 Cab to a 95 C2 (w/LSD!) to the 2000 C4 Cab we have now, I am torn between a 996 Turbo or an 996 gt3. The turbo is amazing in acceleration, but the GT3 is so quick and nimble.
No car upgrades for me until my career stabilizes and I finish the house remodel!
+1
I've had my 2000 C2 for a looong time now and I still love it. I have driven numerous other Pcars(everything from '80s era 911s to late model 997 C2Ss with PDK) in that time and I still prefer my car over all of them. Although, I'd love to add a 996/997 GT3 to the garage.
Not to mention, the 996 really stands out in a crowd...
well if I'm looking for bang for the buck ... I think a '07 997 (C2) or '09 Boxster S .....if I wait 5 more years perhaps the '12 Boxster S is in range .....
A rust free 914 would be a hoot.
I had a couple of them in the '80s and loved them. I actually thought them more fun than the '80 SC Targa I had near the same time.
I'm about to be Porsche-less for a while, now. But next time, I'd really like to get something old school, like a late SC. There's an Anniversary Silver one around here that never fails to turn my head...
In about four years, I'll be in the market for the just released Boxster. GT3 997 would be amazing, but it would be wasted on me. I don't track the car.
Presumably the 2013 Cayman will look as great, so that very well might be my next toy. I'm certainly keeping the 4S though, not really worth selling at ~$25-$30k or whatever it will be worth.
I've NEVER understood WHY somebody says this! This should pertain to ANYTHING YOU BUY! Just like buy the Newest Model you can afford, WHY just because it's the Latest Greatest model doesn't mean it the Best or Best Looking model. Just look over on the air-cooled forums & I'm sure they could give you a few reasons WHY Newer is not always the Best!

wanted to throw this up on the forum - in early february/march i'll be looking for a nice clean under 70K miles seal grey/black 2002-2003 coupe w/6 speed thats had the LN IMS upgrade
