Suggestion

If you run open headers with no cat bypass pipes and no muffler bypass pipes it's CRAZY loud and it feels very "blippy" at under 4k rpm.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

21 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Guys, on my '84 911, I've installed a set of used headers I got from a friend, and installed the Flowmaster muffler setup that he had. the two systems don't quite mate up though, so I need to head to my local muffler shop to have the guy get everything lined up. That leaves me with the task of possibly driving with OPEN headers to his shop about three miles away. I started it up and it's OBNOXIOUS! Like Drag Racer obnoxious. Have you guys done this?

POST 2Original post

I've done this with my LT1 Teans Am. Had to drive it from the dealer to the muffleshop. It was fun.

POST 3Original post

I did this with a small block v8 chevy truck back when I was in high school. It was hilariously fun. A bunch of guys were asking me what kind of mufflers I had on it the next day If you have neighbors they will not like you.

POST 5Original post

Won't be any more obnoxious than a Harley so go ahead and have at it!

POST 6Original post

I drove mine with cats only when my mufflers were getting Fistered. Crazy loud droney.

POST 7Original post

Keep it at 7k RPM and you won't care what anyone else thinks!

POST 8Original post

More than once in my youth. I remember driving my big-block Z28 w/ 454 bored .060 at 11:1 compression on headers and 4" collector across town. Lets just say it made pretty colors out the exhaust at dusk but attracted all the wrong kinds of attention from local LEO. Although it might have been the high-rise manifold with the 1000cfm holly and no hood that might have caught their eye, LOL.

POST 10Original post

I did it in my 1984 Pontiac Firebird. It was a 305 V8. I had an Edelbrock manifold on it, a Holly 650 double-pumper four-barrel carb and a Crane cam. I put a new set of Hooker headers on it and I drove it to the muffler shop with open headers to have my exhaust installed. I went with Cherry Bomb mufflers and pipes that stuck out right under the doors Daytona-style. I thought it was pretty cool back in the '80s, but as I recall, it was so loud that you couldn't carry on a conversation in the car.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Lol! All of you guys are giving me a good laugh. I have to fly for the next four days, so I'll probably drive it down there on Monday morning. Oh man...

POST 12Original post

When I was installing my PSE I started mine up with only the headers just for laughs. Obnoxiously loud. Heck I run with the PSE is quiet mode 50% of the time as it get pretty loud when you get on it. I know that when I have seen post of people running with muffler delete pipes I have said that I thought this was not really a good approach to respecting others. As a kid I ran my Harley with straight pipes, but that was 40 years ago. Now i have a Road King with the quietest pipes I could find. You can hardly hear the exhaust. We do a lot of touring and 6-8 hours with a loud exhaust can really wear on you. The same is true in my cab with the loud setting on the PSE.

POST 13Original post

I have exhaust bypass pipes on my 996, had them for over a year. I love them. No problems with the neighbors and I work rotating shifts. If you know how to drive with the throttle, no issues in a residential area. Just my 2 cents. When you get on it....that is a different story though. I drive by cops all the time and just watch the gas pedal. Not that big of an issue.

POST 14Original post

Brought back memories! '69 Camaro with shoehorned in 427 cu.in. Holley 850cfm double pumper on Edelbrock intake! Crazy fast accelerator! p.s. wait till you put the X74 suspension on, you will not believe the difference!!!! Amazing transformation. (should have come this way from Germany) Pete

POST 15Original post

Ask mglobe on this forum what a SPEC 996 sounds like with straight pipes.. VERY loud!

POST 16Original post

Head to the shop early, so you don't encounter as much traffic. Maybe 5:00 am will do. If you pass a Prius, make sure to downshift and floor it. Just because.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, I fired it up and drove it to my muffler guy, who quickly took care of the alignment issues between the headers and dual-out muffler. It sounds AWESOME now! Interestingly, during the open-header drive to the shop, the car quieted down to a (barely) tolerable level once I brought the RPM up to 2000 and above. It really was at its worst at idle.

POST 18Original post

With open headers you can really hear when the engine warms up, and comes out of "cold mode". It quiets down. And you are right, there is a sweet spot when its quiet. Anything above and bellow is like the World is coming to an end.....but it's fun!

POST 19Original post

If you run open headers with no cat bypass pipes and no muffler bypass pipes it's CRAZY loud and it feels very "blippy" at under 4k rpm. With that being said you'll be fine driving it for a few miles. With the additional tubing (cat and muffler bypass pipes) it's actually not that bad for daily driving but it's VERY loud on startup and until the engine warms up; after that you can keep it quiet if you go easy on the throttle.

post up video! This isn't open headers, but my Murci breaks 103db at start up: You Tube Nick
