I will be changing my oil once a year (2-4,000 miles) with maybe 2 DE�s a year, I was thinking of doing a filter inspection in mid year.

Can you remove a 996 filter for inspection and replace it without dropping the oil? Seems a cheap way of checking for metallic debris in between oil changes. I will be changing my oil once a year (2-4,000 miles) with maybe 2 DE�s a year, I was thinking of doing a filter inspection in mid year. I think you can remove the filter without dropping the oil, wanted to know if anyone has done this, do you have to drop the filter housing and quickly switch over whilst spilling oil all over yourself, or does it not flow oil from the filter housing?

I do this midway every oil change to inspect the filter. Yes, you can take the filter out, no oil will drain from the engine, just some drips. You will lose about 1/3 of a quart that is inside the filter housing.

Please share both of your findings. I did that the other day, but can't figure out what is normal. My thread is just a few posts down. I kept a clean container under, since it will drip and flow a little around the filter housing. I wanted to search the oil for debris as well, hence the clean container. Regards, Johan
