It was the arm on the passenger side which moves the small flap of the mechanism.
Leading evidence: 'arm' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'arm' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Use chf202s' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I suspect the true fault lies in the actual engine lid clasp.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

People who have had the same problem mention a magical place where they put a little more fluid in and the problem was solved for them.
Does anyone have pictures of the exact location of where to top up the hydraulic fluid which operates the top of a 1999 Cabriolet. Mine has stopped operating. People who have had the same problem mention a magical place where they put a little more fluid in and the problem was solved for them. Where this magical place is, beats me. I can see inside the engine compartment a top up place saying on the cap. (Only hydaulicoil Pentosin CHF 11S). I removed the cap and see on the dipstick the level which is bang on the cold level mark which is correct as the engine is cold. I doubt this being the magical place. I believe the one I am looking for is under the clam shell part which hides the hood/top. If the magical place is actually under there, how to get to it beats me if I can't move the top. Any help would be well appreciated. Thanks.
The tank in the engine compartment is for the power steering system. To refill/add fluid to the top hydraulics you have to partially open the top, disconnect the cables at the bottom rear of the top (simple ball caps that pop off), then push the top up at the rear to expose the liner to the top storage compartment. To remove the liner there are four or five plastic caps/friction pins along the roll bar that pop out. Then the liner can be lifted out (it fits in a few gaskets, etc.). Then you will seethe pump for the system. The filler port is on the rear, in the center toward the bottom.
The fluid for the system is available at the dealer in punt bottles. Not sure what the spec for the fluid is,but the system does not hold a lot.
Somewhere the is a DIY on this I will see if I can find it.
Thanks Kromdom but I can't even start the job. the first step is 1. Open the top partially to the position shown.
That position shows the top half open. Mine will not move from the closed position via the key or the dash button. It says on the dash that the engine lid is open and it is fully closed. Now if I can open it manually, I can start the job. Will have to look further into how to open it manually. Thanks for the copy paste. I have two threads going right now relating to the same job. This job hopefully will get the top working correctly. I suspect the true fault lies in the actual engine lid clasp. I pushed it one time and it opened and closed ok. Then I put WD 40 on it and it didn't work since. Talk about a viscious circle or a catch 22. This it it.
When I did mine, they called it an oral syringe at the pharmacy and gave me one for free. You can use the new CHF202s with the CHF11s also. You my want to check something else before you start to play with the fluid. On the large batwings you will see a threaded rod (refered to elsewhere as 'spiral gears'), these operate the batwings and if they feel any restrictions the whole motion stops dead, try and lube these first, something with a straw works well. It's cheaper, easier and could use a lube anyway. It cured my problem after adding fluid did nothing.
Kromdom the instructions you are copying pasting from renntech are available to paying members of renntech that Loren hosts with his own money - and whose site that is sustained in part by the barely six percent that contribute
I would seek his permission before doing that
I solved the top issue. It was nothing to do with the hydraulics of the convertible top. After putting the top into 'service mode position' I found a small arm to one of the flaps of the top had come off. Popped it back in place, secured with a minute spring type clip and all is working fine again.
Do you mean a picture of the little arm that came away? I see you have a hard top car. It would mean me removing the carpet from the back again to release the securing wires to get the top into 'service mode' but I will if you think that would help you if you have a convertible. Please let me know. BTW the top has been working every time since the fix and thats about 2 weeks ago. It was the arm on the passenger side which moves the small flap of the mechanism. It also works from the key in the drivers door as well. Left and hold to open and right and hold to close the top. Wait until the windows are fully opened or closed to complete the full cycle.
hi Hurdi,
My car is actually a cab - had the hardtop on for the picture. Don't go to any trouble if it is hard to access. Thought it might be easy.
Ted
OK Ted will do but later on today as I am in a bowling league until late afternoon. No problem mate. BTW it is working and still minus the plastic cover part for the hook which attaches into the front screen. Check to see that both screws are tight under the 'alian' looking eyes of that part near thje inside light switches. Mine was and the top would close and open continuously without fully latching. I tightened them and now its working every time without the plastic covering for the hook. I am waiting for one to be delivered and I will add it to the hook when it comes. Hopefully the top should keep working with the new part in place. If not I will remove the plastic cover.
Ok Ted here are a few pictures of the cab in service mode and the little arm that had come away.
Stop the top halfway and feel under the back end of the painted part for a wire on either side. Pull off the wire each side.
same on both sides.. pull hard on **** end haha.
You can see where the arm came away under the hook part.
Now if you want to go in further you can remove the carpet part by removing the four plastic studs with a prizing from a screw driver. They simply pop out. Then you can see the full workings of the automatic top.Dont forget to attach the wires either side again.
BTW it took all of 5 minutes to do that.
Well the plastic cover came for the hook part of the top where it attaches into the top of the wind screen and micro switch. The top has been working without this cover. I decided to put the cover on anyway to prevent metal to metal contact and subsequent marking of the entrance to the micro switch area. I did this without any crazy glue on it so that if it didnt work with the plastic cover in place, then I could remove it. Anyway I cut out the two parts of the circular parts of the cover and slipped the cover on and the convertible top is still working just fine. The plastic cover part made in Germany cost me only $12 delivered to the door. Probably the cheapest fix ever.
