Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
At the time, it was the only simple way to get them with the necessary hardware to adapt them to the 996.
Leading evidence: 'only simple way' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'only simple way' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace air oil separator' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I've not replaced mine but had to remove them to replace my AOS.

Remove underside nut/bolt, and two engine compartment bolts (replace with new part)
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Recently I did my motor mounts. After about a 100 mile drive last night and the first real drive since the change...
The car used to be all over the road it would "wagon rut" something awful and was also very fragile to cross wind.
All of this is GONE! The car drives a lot like my 928 used to.... straight as an arrow. Not sure why but a HUGE improvment.
Next the car has more power, After doing some research and a noted engine builder on here confirmed... Yes bad motor mounts can/do retard the spark about 5 Degrees! due to the knock sensor.
Interior noise is way down as well as interior vibration.
This was an easy repair and well worth the $200 spent on the mounts.
I should probably change my mounts too. I've got 115k+ on my original mounts.
I've heard great things about RS motor mounts. Apparently they are firmer than stock mounts, but not as harsh as solid mounts.
It is next on my list of things to do. I'm 90% sure mine are out, or going out, due to the interior vibration. Interesting about the cross-wind feeling...I get that too, but figured it had more to do with the aerodynamics of the car, and having a light front end that has always felt floaty at high speeds.
I noticed my tail pipes uneven and then just looking lower. Plus lots of interior vibration and a clunk on my shifts. It was mostly the clunking on the shifts.. the other stuff i just found when I started looking in to it.
I am simply AMAZED at what it did.
Plus they're so easy to swap out. I've not replaced mine but had to remove them to replace my AOS. If I would have known I would have replaced them at that time but again, so easy that if I had to do it another time I would.
Shark,
Correct me if I've got the process wrong.
1. Put car on ramps
2. Jack up engine (how far?)
3. Remove underside nut/bolt, and two engine compartment bolts (replace with new part)
a)repeat on opposite side
4. Lower jack
I haven't seen a great DIY on it, and I've looked all over, but does that about sum it up?
Thanks,
DS
Guys, Guys,,,,,,It is one of the easiest ways to improve 996. I put in windrush ss mounts,,,I immediately noticed much improved shifting, handling with power on mid turn,,,,,everything is better. The stock mounts are soft, the ss mounts don't create any undo NVH. Note, the SS trans mount is a whole nother story, that I could not live with, it's like the drivetrain is in the passenger seat. It is easy to do, just make sure the top nut that mates to the body is locked in. Easy, cheap, seriously effective, like a good seat and wheel.
Any racers need a SS trans mount?
WW
My understanding was the opposite. If you go for a mount any harder than, say, the RS mount, then it's advisable to upgrade the transmission mount too, since the torque that is no longer being absorbed at the motor mounts can find an outlet further up the line and cause expensive problems.
Yes, the forces having to go somewhere...but most of it goes into moving the car forward. Thats the point after all.
This may be a problem on track cars, but doubtful on the street.
Stiff transmission mounts transfer a *lot* of vibration and noise to the chassis eh. Much more so than motor mounts.
I learned that the hard way.
To each their own, but I love mine.
Other agree on-line. People complain about the solids, but not the RS mounts. I'm sure the WEVO are fine also, but why not buy the Porsche stuff? Its the same price.
+1. I can't speak with authority about others, but for me the RS mounts were the 'mama bear' solution: hard enough to make a very distinct difference, but not so hard as to make the car buzzy and harsh or transfer too much torque downstream. Combined with the SSK, it's killer.
Yup, I bet it is.
I personally didn't care for the B&M SSK, but whatever kit was installed in my previous 996 was nice.
I did a LWFW at the same time as the RS motor mounts.
That's a nice combination!
Pelican doesn't sell them - you have to buy them from Porsche.
I bought mine from Southcoast in Florida. It'snot a kit per se - the man had to out together the mounts and the mounting hardware from the motorsport catalog.
The mounts carry a 964 part number. They're the real deal.
I got mine from Carnewal. At the time, it was the only simple way to get them with the necessary hardware to adapt them to the 996. It's just bolts, but I didn't have any appetite for experimentation
I didnt even ramp the car.
I jacked up the engine just till I could see the body start to raise.
I had to remove the seondary air injection pump on the left side. (2 screws)
Other than that, you are right on.
The nuts on the bottom are pretty large and a deep socket is needed
