The warranty for parts and labour is 6 months so I've missed out by two months as the previous keeper had the separator changed :0(

Nope...oil separator that was actually changed 8 months ago, but here in Dubai warranty is only 6 months due to the climate...so i had to pay out worked out around 800 in the end.

Once replaced we need to flush the engine and coolant system to have residue out from the system.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
33 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.
Rennlist: 1 discussions
0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.
1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Once test drive done and completed I will confirm the problem solved accordingly.
Hi guys hope that some light can be shed on this. I live in Dubai so extreme heat and went back to Blighty for 3 weeks. My mate started my car periodically but never drove it and told me she was steaming out the tail pipes. I've never had this so on my return took the car back. Perfect drive until tonnes of smoke/steam came out for around 5 minutes solid, white stuff and then disappeared.
Today I read up and it seems semi common when 996's get left without being driven so I started her up and saw the coolant light flashing slowly, never happened before and on topping up she took about 5 litres.
I've taken a pic of the oil filler cap. All levels on the gauges seem fine and she drives smooth.
Could the knowledgeable amongst us please shed some much needed light...please
I was hoping no one would say that.... The dipstick is clean pure oil and the coolant tank clean too. Could there be no other explanation? (Fingers crossed....)
Sitting for 3 weeks is not that long. If you lost 5 ltrs of coolant it must have gone somewhere.... could be crack in hose and you are seeing stream come out of engine compartment after it heats up and pressurises. Fact that oil looks clean and no oil in coolant could be positive( ie no cracked head) but I would tow to mechanic and have them pressure test cooling system to see if they can find leak. The Mayo in oil filler tube could just be from multiple starts without warming up the oil to temp ... condensation. But I would not start engine u.tip u figure this out ......
OK I will def take the forums advice. I just sold my 1999 Carrera and the pipe had split on that so semi-know where to check but this one seems fine + I have not had it long and got it from a true enthusiast who spent fortunes on it just 2,000 miles ago. Fingers crossed and I shall keep the forum updated and hopefully come back with some positive news......
my guess....
condensation in the motor from starting and not driving
water low - that could be a leak, pressure test system, when was it checked last, has it been low for a long time?
Lol @Gretch. She's at the shop now so they will be getting back to me today. the previous owner had new head gasket, oil separator and heat exchanger done around 3,000 miles ago. there was no obvious leak at all so its just a matter of hoping that what ever it is isn't costly....
I have received the following from the garage:
"I have checked the car for the coolant and oil mixing and found out the engine oil separator is faulty, causing engine coolant to mix with engine oil. Need to replace it, I have attached estimate for the same. Once replaced we need to flush the engine and coolant system to have residue out from the system.
I prefer to have long test drive after just to make sure there is no other problem on the same. Once test drive done and completed I will confirm the problem solved accordingly. Let me know if I should proceed."
I'd love too but they have just closed now. Additionally he said that there was water leaking on the spark plugs so the separator is faulty regardless. It was only changed 9,000 km ago and 8 months today. The warranty for parts and labour is 6 months so I've missed out by two months as the previous keeper had the separator changed :0(
Why would a new head gasket been put on?
Any chance of overheating the block and PO warped the heads slightly?
Or was this a knee jerk reaction to an intermix fix?
I have not heard of these engines having head gasket failures.
Mike
I have one in the shop right now that I just put head gaskets on. It happens.
Although I didn't see where the OP said he needs or had a head gasket done.
I'm not very savvy under the bonnet so excuse my ignorance but the previous owner had the engine out to have something done to it and thought it logical to have a fair few things done to her while it was out.
I'll presume that is in UAE dirhams, which means approx $1056. USD which is a decent fee for replacing AOS and flushing cooling and engine, including replacing coolant and oil & filter. Market prices vary depending on location and I am guessing that UAE would be at the higher end of repair costs.
Yeah price wise its decent. I fly out of Dubai for 10 days on the 29th and the car will be ready on the 30th, sods law! So I'm gonna let them sit and monitor the car so that any issues can be addressed in my absence.
Would you kindly ask your indy how he knows it is the AOS? I have suspected that a failing AOS could cause intermix, but how does one distinguish between a bad (intermixing AOS) and a cracked head? TIA
My point exactly -- if you blew a head gasket on an M96 engine -- something caused it.
Not like 944 Turbo where the gaskets themselves are a failure mode.
So if the PO truly knows that the headgasket was replaced -- then it's likely
to be a symptom and not the cause.
Mike
Experience, along with some proper testing,ie: coolant pressure test, compression, leak down, will tell you quite a bit.
A previous head gasket failure/replacement could have also been a misdiagnosis on a faulty AOS. AOS is the easiest/least expensive to replace, if that's where it is leading I would start by replacing that also. Then observe and retest to see if anything else. Some would depend on miles and condition of car along with history or repairs and usage.
Nope...oil separator that was actually changed 8 months ago, but here in Dubai warranty is only 6 months due to the climate...so i had to pay out worked out around 800 in the end.
Interesting. So it was a failed AOS that had been changed only 8 months ago? I am still wondering if some of these new AOSs are defective. I guess the way to check is to clamp the coolant lines together and flush the coolant. If the coolant remains clean, the AOS has an intermix problem.
