I think that the canister was preventing you from filling all the way up.

Mine is failing and it is causing errant readings on the gauge and I can't get it filled all the way up.

Becasue two times, I had the pump not shut off and gas flew out the fill hose all over me..

Since I have owned the car, my gas gauage never showed full tank. It would show about 7/8 when I would fill up. I recently had to replace my charcole canister rejuvination valve. It was sticking open. I did so and today was the first time I filled the gas tank since. Low and behold, for the first time in 2 years, the fuel gauage went to the full line...

I think that the canister was preventing you from filling all the way up. The fuel won't flow properly (or very slowly) through the filler neck if the canister is bad. Mine is failing and it is causing errant readings on the gauge and I can't get it filled all the way up. You are probably now able to enjoy a truly full tank!

That's a symptom of a failed canister. The fuel fuller neck won't allow the fuel to flow freely, either causing the pump to shut off early or suddenly ejecting gas everywhere. You would think that after nearly 50 years of 911s that they would have the fuel-filling issues fixed!
