Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just replaced my air filter today and while doing it, decided to clean out the air box. There is a foam pad in the bottom of the air box. When I touched it, it, I noticed it was pretty dry rotted and started falling apart. Rather than have it clog up the new filter, I removed it. Does anyone know what purpose it serves and can it be replaced by itself? 2004 C4S

POST 3Original post

Secondary filter for capturing and keeping the bigger stuff from getting into the system.

POST 5Original post

It's for sound deadening. You should notice that you can hear the intake noise/growl a bit more with the foam removed.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A couple of different opinions but thank you. The foam had a corrogated look to it which in retrospect seems to support sound deadening. What is strange however is that I contacted my local dealer and their system does not show it at all. Not surprisingly they suggested an entire new air box at the cost of several hundred $ would solve the problem. For that matter, I guess a new car would solve the problem too.

POST 8Original post

I have a bit of foam glued to the bottom of my air box. I just assumed it soaked up water that got in but I guess sound deadening also makes sense.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It was located on the floor of the airbox right where the snorkel comes into the airbox. It wasn't very big - somewhat irregular shaped maybe 4X6 inches. It was not glued to the box, but was rather held firmly in place by a flat plastic cage. It wasn't going anywhere as the cage was held in place with 5 or 6 screws that screwed into the floor of the airbox. By the way, my car is totally stock and I have no reason to believe this was not original.

POST 10Original post

I have absolutely no idea but this is the first fun thread we have had in a while so I want to play, too. 1. Soaks up the condensation that forms over night inside the air filter housing and then lets it slowly evaporate into the air intake system as the incoming air slowly sucks it up the next time the engine is started, Keeps big water droplets from getting into the paper filter. 2. OR, perhaps the sound deadening, but if it is that small, seems unlikely. 3. OR, is a hold over from the Motor Sound Package days and would have been the initial filter for the little holes that would have been drilled there on the MS Package. 4. OR, is the first real meaningful potential entry in over two years to the "Things You Didn't Know About Your 996" STICKY thread.

Hmm, now you mention it, I do recall seeing holes in my airbox under the sponge...

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There are holes in my airbox, but not in that area. There are dozens of small holes in the bottom of the entire other side of the airbox which I agree seems to allow for additional breathing, but I didn't have any under the foam. Immediately in front of the foam there was one hole near the bottom of the snorkel in what seemed like the lowest point in the airbox, which I have to believe was intended to allow any water to drip out. The mystery continues................
