Some early power kit units that were not factory installed will allow for the Motorsport AOS.
Leading evidence: 'Install will allow' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install will allow' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Unless the transmission is off or the engine is out, it isn't easy to change the AOS.

Mine cracked and leaked so that was replaced also.

It has been tested from below sea level to over 11,500' elevation with great results.

It's been a true test of man and machine, but driving down the road in a car that's this experimental with confidence has become more rewarding than any sale it can lead to.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Does a 3.6 X51 engine suffer from the same AOS issues as the non X51 motor? Or are the parts different?. Does the 3.6 suffer as much as the 3.4 ?
Im having some work on my car and whilst I have no AOS issues wondered whether it was worth having it done, it only has 41k miles on
My recollection -- based on pics I took of an X51 engine out of a car -- is the X51 engine uses the same lame *** AOS as the other engines. So yes (if my recollection is right -- I do not have the pics with me) the X51 engine can have AOS issues.
Whether to replace an AOS that is not showing signs of issues or to leave in service is your call.
My advice is if it ain't broke don't fix it. Whatever you are having done to the engine -- as long as it remains in the car -- it is probably not that much of a duplicate in labor to result in much if any savings having the AOS replaced at the same time so all this premature/defensive AOS replacement does is have you spending money to fix something that ain't broke.
Plus there is the risk (slight but not zero) the replacement AOS goes bad shortly after it is put into service. 'course, this would be covered under warranty but still...
Sincerely,
Macster.
I have 40th AE which is an X51 engine and I just ordered an AOS to do as part of my 60k service / clutch replacement. My understanding is it is much easier to do while in there and for price of AOS cheap insurance. I am doing same with water pump as well. I kow not broken but the labor for either is significantly more than the cost of the parts and I don't want to have to do things twice.
My opinion.
Very smart! These are wear items, just like brake pads and rotors. Better to change them out regularly than have an issue. Besides, the parts are relatively cheap. The labor to do them separately is not.
I had my AOS replaced when the did the LN IMS bearing. It is much easier to replace with the trans out. With these cars getting up in years (forget about mileage and condition, time it time) there are coolant hoses on that side of the motor that join together with a black plastic "Y". This "Y" can break and leak fairly easy as they get brittle over the years. Mine cracked and leaked so that was replaced also.
With regards to the water pump, I am all about proactively replacing the WP but how are you saving on labor costs? The WP is on the opposite side of the engine from the AOS?.
I am not really saving but for the $200 the water pump cost vs. the cost of the 60k and the clutch service not much savings and might as well just get out of way as car will ahve 60k on original punp and fluid.

I used a few but have settled on J&W Motorsports

in Doral area ask for William good honest guy and knows Porsche.
the AOS diaphram does wear out by contact with oil . no brainer to replace while you have access to it.
FYI - the motorsports AOS $700 does not work on X51 engines because of the larger intake manifold.
The X51 is nothing special. It's a standard 3.6 with larger ports, altered cams and different scavenge pumps. I can disassemble a standard 3.6 and an X51 and aside from the parts I mentioned no one here could tell which engine was which. Further, the parts between the two are completely interchangeable.
I think you forgot to inculde larger intake manifold, which is also made of metal not plastic. Did you read the the post? I am speaking of the MOTORSPORTS DUAL CHAMBERED AOS, not the stock AOS.
Wrong! Different heads, exhaust, intake manifold, cams, valves, Valve timing, valve springs, etc....
There are so many differences in the engine package alone. (edit: I should have mentioned I own a 40th Anni.)
The X51 AOS is the same as standard, and I must say that mine blew 2 months into new ownership. The car had approx. 60K miles on it.
Cheers,
Paul
I even called your shop for advice. You guys said that you tried a few years ago it fit the MotorSports AOS on an X51 engine, even fabricated at new bracket and spent $2K-$3K trying to get it to work, which it did NOT.
Yes I read the post. The standard X51 does not come equipped with a different AOS. The dual chamber Motorsport AOS is not factory on the X51.
The intake may be different, but it doesn't change the fact that the engine internals are the same as a standard 3.6 engine. A common misconception is that the X51 is a different/ stronger engine and that's not the case.
I am riding shotgun right now in a car equipped with a dual chamber AOS that isn't a factory Porsche part. It's performe perfectly for the past 5,500 miles we have driven it in the past week. It even seems to work well with the Mobil 1 we have been trying since a pit stop in Calgary AB last Tuesday.
The entire point of my post was that the
FACTORY MOTORSPORTS DUAL CHAMBERED
AOS will not fit with an X-51 intake. You must not have understood.
Please clarify. You are currently in a X51 car with a working AFTERMARKET dual chambered AOS?
I am curious, what after-market dual chambered AOS are you using?

This FACTORY MOTORSPORTS Part does not fit with 996 3.6 X51 engines.
This is our own dual chamber AOS and it will fit with the X51 intake. It has been tested from below sea level to over 11,500' elevation with great results.
Not all X51 intakes are the same, contrary to what you may believe. Some early power kit units that were not factory installed will allow for the Motorsport AOS. The differences in these intakes are included in my book.
Thanks forthr interest. We don't plan to release the unit till late 2013. We came up with them for our big bore engines primarily as they are much harder on the AOS due to increased vacuum levels. This is especially true near sea level.
Needless to say, a whole generation of alternatives will be released after the results of this R&D trip are evaluated. It's been a true test of man and machine, but driving down the road in a car that's this experimental with confidence has become more rewarding than any sale it can lead to.
