I am still not completely comfortable with this car and I have to keep reminding myself to order the power a little before I really need it.
OK Boys and Gals... track season (for those of us with 4...seasons) is coming up fast. I don't know about you all but as soon as the track day ends, I'm harassing the track photog for my glamour shots... I'd love to see your favorite pics and videos of you all ripping it up in your 996's... Let em fly !

A video from a couple of years ago in my 2001 996 Cup at PCA Sebring race. Was a fun race I just needed to find 100 more horsepower for the straights 😀

At Lime Rock with the 996T last September.
One lap plus - very sloppy lap. I had bought the car 9 days before. It's a lot different than driving my VW on track!

Awesome vid Aaron ! Lime rock looks like so much fun. Need to figure out what date Im going to shoot for to get there, gonna have to be an unrestricted sound day.

Dude... I hope so too. Make no doubt about it, I'm judging you, plus, when you track a 996 - you'll need to carry them around with a wheel barrow - FACT...
And no - Drift cars and Nissan actual race cars don't count in these parts... (but you can totally post them anyway
)
And I'm posting this video...again, its somewhere else. And yes... its cheese ball, But it still gets me pumped up to drive. So close.

Nice... You managed to fine one of the handful of cars that sounds better than the flat 6 ripping down the straight...
The right car was ahead though
Looks great !
Well u have 12 track days at 6 track already paid for so i hope someone takes some pics if me as u go around. First one is April 3 so pics coming soon.

In car of pointing the wrong direction with cars coming at you is scary enough - can’t imagine it in reality.
Glad the hardware and the driver came through unscathed.
2019, my beloved C4S on Nrburgring.
If you ever go there, make sure you get at least one lap with an instructor. And Luis Ramrez, Mexican racing driver who lives in Nurburg is a safe bet!
I haven’t been on track in over 2 decades.
SCCA ITC, SCCA GT3, SCCA S2000
Me 22+ years ago.
Somewhere I have a VHS tape of some in car of the GT3 Scirocco.
I came close to getting back on track last year, but COVID cancelled on me.
Hopefully I can get back on track someday.
Recovering from surgery today and found an old video with some 996 GT3 Cup cars and thought I’d share it:
You Tube
Some pics from my last track day in 2020 at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. Depending on gov't lockdowns here looks like my first track day this month may be canceled...
Your car looked so clean before the orange, blue, and big wing. I know my opinion means nothing, but man I really like it in the pictured configuration!
Thanks, I love that version of it too - love the version of it now and hopefully the next iterations... Still have stock decklid, still can paint it all black and it's likely I will try paint matched when budget allows.
Just going with the flow.
Willow track day Friday with my son as copilot. First day with 996 cabrio on track. Ran great, I drove my friends 718 cayman as well and thought I need new coil overs. That car was much bettter in the turns.
Feb 2020... The first and last time I had the Porsche on track. It was so much fun. I can't wait to get it back out there with its new suspension and stickier tires.
My brother(993), me(996), LeMons Teammate (e36)
Overtaking the 944 with a GT3 in the background that was also in green group...
So much squat and roll...
The same track day as Jason (zbomb) posted above, different run group. I had quite a time trying to stay put in the car - I really need to get a real bucket seat. Using the steering wheel to keep yourself planted isn't the greatest thing.
Great on track video. I know what you mean about sliding around on stock seats. I finally installed a Sparco race type seat over the winter, looking forward to driving with the upgrade.
Thank you for the nice word! Car has Evom Supercharged / Bilstein B16 + RSS TS-2 + Cargraphic sway bar / 6pot&4pot Brembos / CAE shifter / deep sump oil pan...etc, and run with
Toyo R888 tires.
I haven't done any track events for the past 9+ years, still in the process of relearning the car and improve my driving skill.
No out of town that weekend. Going back to NYST 5/1 then lime rock on 7/3. Was thinking maybe palmer this Friday afternoon but not sure of my schedule now.
Very nice! Thanks for the shoutout. Here's a view from inside my car of the SN95 Mustang... I was expecting a point by several times... actually that driver was good about point by's, just not on that lap. I guess I should have run a clean lap as lead. I wanted to do a lap following you though and I didn't expect as much traffic as we went along.
You Tube
Here's the continuation of that lap. I can only export 3 minutes of video with the software I have. This is my best lap of the session, despite deploying all 12 pounds of boost I'm not quite as fast as you: 1:26.4 (and only 3 seconds faster than my VW... I need to learn this car more!).
You Tube
Great footage guys. You guys are looking very smooth.
A little trick to getting faster on the track, is to do a little go carting. You probably have a local indoor track. They seem to be popping up everywhere. The reason it helps is that you will be experiencing more forces on your body than you are used to in your car as you are whipping the go cart around, which helps to acclimate your body and mind to pick it up a notch on track with your 996.
It may sound crazy, but it works. With the exception of the past two years because of the pandemic, I tried to start every season with a little go carting before the first event. Amazing how it gets you mentally prepared for what you will be feeling physically.
I have found that the only limitation on my car is me. Carting helps.
I don't want this thread to sink down out of sight. There is a 10 day lull between track sessions up here, well actually more like 14 days if you count sessions where we're driving 996's. So I'll put this here: this was at Palmer (Whiskey Hill Racetrack)
https://www.palmermotorsportspark.com
last Sunday in the heavy rain. I have driven on track in rain before, though not here. It seems this track's corners are all off camber and it's VERY SLIPPERY when it's wet.
I left my 996 at home and drove my VW. I can hear you laughing all the way over here, except my VW has a 270-hp supercharged VR6 and weighs about 2650. It still doesn't turn in very well because all the weight is up front so to get reasonable times I have to dive bomb the corners, brake as late as possible, turn in going slow, get on the throttle before the apex, and fast out.
This track can be run both ways although not at the same time. Sunday we drove counter-clockwise. I can't describe how slippery it was. My car was sliding all over, even though it's front wheel drive it was a handful to keep going straight. When it's dry I can go WOT in 3rd gear at the apex of 7, lift slightly for 8, and stay WOT in 3rd gear until the brake zone for 9. Not so much this past Sunday, even maintenance throttle through 8 was too much.
Watch the video... nothing bad happens I promise. Track map:
You Tube
I’ll be there in the 8th and praying it looks nothing like it does in your video. I’m not sure videos do that place justice of the consequence of error, I’m giving you a standing slow clap over here for beasting it through in those conditions.
I’ll be running CC for the first time and learning the track all over again.
Hi everyone. What do you guys use for a stable phone holder? I have the iPhone 11 max its big and heavy and all holders Ive tried so far arent stable enough. I mean with suction cup to put on the windshield and record videos using track apps. Thank you!
Actually mine is pretty good except last track day, my magnetic pad moved slightly which caused the action in my vid
What I am using is just a 3D printed adaptor for cigarette lighter combined with baseus phone holder.

Ok, first track weekend at Grattan (Belding, MI) in the books. Big thanks to Jason (zbomb) for the real time advice on several items. Key points:
*2021 Changes to the C2: Motorsports LSD, NT01 tires on Apex wheels, Stiffer Springs on Ohlins
*Personal best time, but lost probably a second on the last dip/bump near the end
*Anyone who has experience at this track and can give pointers on going faster...Please do!
You Tube
Haha, that is why I edit it down to the one lap, so you dont have to see the rusty parts! It is hard not to watch the vbox timer when it is showing you are on a heater. Thanks again for all the help 🙏.
Man that place looks fun. Not that far from me either. I need to make the trip up there soon.
Drove the 350z this weekend 500 miles to a hillclimb in south eastern Kentucky. I was about the only person not on Hoosier A7, which now I fully understand is fully necessary going up such a steep incline lol.
ended up 1st in class and 23rd overall out of almost 100.
Here a crappy run from Sunday. The car is mainly an endurance built track car lol. Hell of a time tho.
You Tube
Great video, brought back found memories of running hillclimbs back in the 1970s. I used to drive various British sports cars in Pennsylvania with PHA club. It was a lot of fun.
Thanks man. Definitely a neato time for sure.
There were quite a few neat classics running. Majority of the people competing are regular hillclimb folks. Im jealous of the people that dont have to travel so far haha.
Man you should try and do the Empire,Mi hillclimb. Its short but its a great time .
You Tube
Here is my 2004 911 Cab I converted to a track car this winter and a video from Barber in it. Still have some more work to do. Its not finished but it has made it a long way.
Rode shotgun with my brother in his 991.1 GT3 RS at Thermal Club in Indian Wells, CA in early 2018. Sorry for the out the window view, but it was the only place I could keep the phone steady. Still get the great speed sensation. Great scenery too. I worried about dropping the phone out the window. Riding shotgun is a pretty violent experience. Since you are not driving, you are always tensed and braced off because you dont know exactly when the next maneuver is going to start. My neck was a little sore after that day.
You Tube
He traded this on a 991.2 GT3 RS, his current track weapon.
David and I before launch.
The best lap I could muster first day running Palmer in the original counter-clockwise configuration, 1:56.1.
I had prepared that I would be re-learning the track to a large extent, I've run it 2X in the clockwise config - But it was like a whole new track.
Fastest lap was last full lap of the day - I'm happy with that, lot of room for improvement next time out (as always).
You Tube
Nice driving.
I was interested in what you thought of the other direction. I'm still the other way and haven't done CW. Just looked and see that the 22nd is also CCW so I'll have more doing the same. Oh well.
I've always driven it in third with only a downshift into turn 4 and then upshift on the main straight. Will experiment next time with some more downshifts.
Would have like to been there to run with you, unfortunately I was out of town.
Hmmm... you’re going to be there on the 22nd... I’ve been debating on running that day.
Maybe I’ll pull the trigger.
Just an edit to add... my main though going away is... how the F am I not able to get myself to stay WOT down the not straight !!! In the other direction I’m WOT the whole time without thinking about it. This direction I’m out of WOT like a 1/4 way down the straight and just managing it, need to push more there.
Also, turn 8, the fast left handed before the sharp down hill right... lot of time to be had manning up there.
Ohh i remembered when I was lifting and tapping the brakes going into it
At least a couple spins there over the course of the day as told by the tire marks growing in QTY.
I drive it the same way. My mind gets confused if I do to much shifting. I know that other places could be better served in 2nd, I'm just too lazy to make the shifts.
That's nicely done. I'm sure you will see areas for improvement - my suggestion is to look at places where you are going relatively slowly. Those should be easiest to speed up. Emphasis on should.
The first few years the track was open, those white reflective things between the pit-out lane and the Turn 1 corner? The strips that flip down if you drive over them? Well, that was a jersey barrier wall separating the pit-out road from the track. Those reflective markers were installed about 3 years ago. It was even more exciting with the narrower chute. My instructor for the first time I was out there kept yelling at me to get closer to the jersey barriers. Scary, it was.
Edit - these are from the 2016 season. Apologies for the non-996 content, I didn;t have the 996 then. Notice the complete lack of tire walls. Pit out lane at Turn 1:
Turn 2:
Hard to believe it was more consequence filled than now, but I do.
If either of you guys have any feedback from my lap of where you think there’s low hanging fruit - I would love your thoughts.
I just got this for palmer on 5/22. Maybe u guys can use the discount as i cant make it, but i do have the Glenn this weekend. Hopefully my phone track app works and i can get a video in this thread.
They only have 28 signed up so far. 12 of those are intermediate. I would guess they are scrambling to get more.
I signed up before the price increase but that was only $5 less than this.

I don't currently track my 996 but I usually do a session in my friend's 4.0L every time he brings it out. My track car is the yellow M3. On the straights, the two cars are pretty evenly matched so they're pretty fun to run together.
Here is some footage of us driving around Chuckwalla Valley Raceway:

Got some pics back from the 5/2 session at Grattan, Michigan. Pics from Shooting Brake Media. After looking at these, going to the stiffer springs and 315 rear tires...impossible go back!
I won't be out with you guys on 5/22 at Palmer - too much stuff going on!
I did make it out to Lime Rock Park on 5/14, fantastic day.
Four sessions with this organization. The first session was really bad. Lime Rock is a short track and a long train of cars can form very quickly. The last session was fantastic, because about 1/2 the drivers had left! I am still not completely comfortable with this car and I have to keep reminding myself to order the power a little before I really need it. That just adds to the fun. I kept getting traction control intervention because of wheelspin coming out of the uphill turn. I doubt the four wheel drive is working any more on this car, it seems to be rear wheel drive only.
The overall track record here is 44.1 seconds in an LMP class car. I can't even comprehend that.
You Tube
Yes I will have the TT on the 26th. I may even have time to install the Sparco QRT seat I bought, blatantly copying you.
Did you see the schedule? There is a track walk that I would like to do, and I'm planning to be there in time for that.
Didnt know about the track walk, but will get there early enough for that. I will touch base with you next week. Sorry you wont be at Palmer this weekend with the 996 warriors.
Too bad won't see you at Palmer Aaron... Double too bad my exhaust is 100x too loud for LR....
Lap looked like a lot of fun.
We'll try to represent The Gang well in your absence this weekend.
Have a great time at Palmer! I'll be doing carpentry at my Dad's house that day.
You'll make it out to LRP some day! It's worth the effort.
There was a 986 at Lime Rock, straight piped, with a huge 2-inlet 2-outlet muffler installed outside of the rear bumper. He said it was from a Chevy Trailblazer (I think?). I forgot to take a picture of it. It looked ridiculous, though it seemed to do the trick. I have seen this 986 at Thompson and it is loud without the extra muffler.
If we had a track photographer I'll try to find the pictures of it.
That's one advantage of the massively heavy Turbo exhaust - it's very quiet.
Salute to all the 996 owners who get their cars on the track. It's actually a very reliable, capable platform for a track car, but don't tell anybody, we don't want to ruin the car's reputation.
Here's a video I put together when I did the PCA Sebring club race a few years ago.

Amazing how the increase in your speed has effected the oil pressure on both the left and right handers. Left hander oil pressure drops look more dramatic with your 3 second increase in lap time. Let's hope we can find a viable cooling solution.
Ok, here is yesterday's video, always looking for ways to improve, feel free to comment (Jason==>trying my best not to peek at oil pressure!)

Awesome Randy - really made that technical track look easy, I know, it is definitely not.
Looks like 996's had a pretty good track weekend !
Just saw your post Glenn - I plan on going a lot faster... we'll keep the fingers crossed in the meantime.
I'm in the Corvette grand sport... ya its not a Porsche lol while I'm finishing up my motor swap for my Porsche i thought I'd buy a toy for the summer to give me something to enjoy... sold the vette last night after only having it for 3 months lol once your go Porsche... all else fails to excite you. got spanked Saturday at the track by .. yup Porsches. passing everything else but the Caymans and 911.. kept killing me in the corners.
I might go pick up a Cayman for the rest of this summer while i finish the 911...
Close enough to me in Chicagoland. First step is that I have to drive Gingerman. Bucket list is to drive every major track around the country. Secondary bucket list is to hit all of the Midwestern local tracks. Now I need to go back to work now and make more money to do this!

Jnelso and theprf at Limerock today. Had a great time, the weather was very hot. 996 Gang was under represented today at Limerock. Better photos to come
How did this end up on the second page? Here's a lap or two out at Lime Rock on 5/26. I was in a different run group from Jnelso. I tried to take pictures of Jnelso on the track and failed totally, little did I know that my phone's memory was full. That also explains the different viewpoint of this track video because it's from my in car camera not TrackAddict running on my phone!

I think a few of us will be at Thompson on 6/1, and I suppose I'll be pressured into driving the 996 again.... my VW is not getting a lot of runs yet this year.
Awesome Brad - Jealous... Looks like a lot of fun over there at the Glen. Good luck today !
Here's my new PB from Thompson the other day - 1:22.6.
You Tube
Wow incredible progress Jason👏, driving is super smooth and fast 💨!
Here is my PB from Grattan over the weekend. These are times well beyond what I thought was possible a year ago. Big effort from driver (data, video study) and car (springs, LSD) are coming together.
You Tube
That track is fast and you are on full attack ! Looks like there are a couple spots where at least one wheel may be in the air.
Awesome vid - confident driving on a fast technical track - Approved !
I really liked you versus the vettes,, keep it up.
Not a lot of wet videos here, Pouring rain before our last session yesterday but it let up in time to get about 10 minutes in. The times I have driven on a wet track I'm amazed at how much grip you still have. Just have to watch for the sheets and standing water. At about 5 minutes I catch a turbo and have about a 3 minute lap.

I put my name on the waitlist but have not heard back.
Going there the 16th for a private day. Excited about that. There is also a mass tuning full day 7/3.
Such quick laps there. Have fun.
I might have a work thing that I can't get out of that day (6/9). I ran LRP two weeks ago and I'm going again on 7/6, so if it can't happen I guess I'll be OK.
That reminds me I owe some videos of Thompson last week.
sorry no vids or pics. I was there with mid-ohio pca and it was my first time there. I started in the blue group with an instructor and solo'ed the 2nd day. I would definately get an instructor if its your first time. Its a fairly technical course and there r good reference points but u need to be taught where the lines r.
No track photographers, but a few paddock pics from my first time out with the 996 last month at NJMP hosted by the local PCA region. Clear skies and great time learning the car.
I have an SCCA TNiA event at Dominion next week.
Jnelso and I made it out to Thompson Speedway for another Track Night in America on the 24th. I drove my VW instead of my 911 so no video, you're not interested in that anyway. Although were in the same run group I never saw Jack driving. Turns out we were going almost the same speed; he's 2 seconds/lap faster than I am.
There were quite a few 996's there - two GT3's and a C2 with an FSI engine that had a mechanical problem requiring a tow off-track. I talked to the C2 driver before and after and he seemed like a nice guy, he didn't know what happened.
Yes, would have been great! The advanced group was kind of empty, actually.
Jason, Jack and I are going to Lime Rock on Tuesday the 6th with SCDA - because it's an unmuffled day! Jason would never fit under their sound restrictions lol.

Hell yea man. It looks the GT3 part for sure.
Got to run around with a brand new? 911. I guess they are all turbo now? I dont know anything.
Anyway the thing was pretty damn quick lol.
He comes into view about 30 seconds in.
Also the guy was sliding it around and having all sorts of fun.

Watkins Glenn last weekend. Focused on braking and apexes for now as I get more accustomed to this. Really awesome experience and a fantastic instructor.
You Tube
Nice job!
Smoother is better and you where very smooth. You could see the steady increase in speed lap by lap. Loved when your instructor said "don't do what he is doing". There are a lot of faster cars out on the track driven by folks that don't know the line, lack smoothness, and therefore the ability to balance the car. Eventually they will learn, but by then, you will be substantially faster than them.
Awesome work.
Thanks! Laying the groundwork for some faster laps in time. What a phenomenal track btw. Bucket list track for anyone. The old 996 feels right at home and just ate it up. It's such a rewarding car to drive this way.
Nice job driving and taking instructions
I thought you were really smooth dropping into turn 2, I still slow down. Track/race drivers are no brakes, pretty much WOT, after turn one to the entry of bus stop.(Not me, yet)
Was this a PCA HPDE? What run group are you in?
I love that track, doesn't hurt, about 50 miles to gate 2 from my house.
Yes pca HPDE. Green run group. I hope to be blue for my next event. Turn 1 is heavy braking with street tires. I was near the limit to ABS. Only if I hit that apex right did the car take me where I needed to be, otherwise Momentum took me way off track and past the paint. As the day went on, turn 2 through the esses was more wide open throttle for me. It's a crazy thought that the pros are 2 wide through there sometimes.
i agree you had the line early. Our 996 is at a power disatvantage on a fast track like watkins. U need to get back there because u left some speed on the table. The only thing i saw was u were too far on the inside at the entrence to the 2 carousels. Its taken me a long time to fight my instincs and to late apex those turns. I did notice there r even more skid marks into the tires on the downill left turn after the 1st carousel. That a turn and the esses are nervy areas and take a while to trust your abilities in those sections.
Thanks. Good advice! The extra HP could have been helpful but like you said much improvement needed to get those clean and consistent lines first. Cheers! Pocono next!
160 and still pulling like a GD freight train...
Pretty mellow on the inputs, then you see the pace. Well put together and driven...
225 and 262 at the end, warm. Guess with all that oomph - comes with the territory. With the base car you get all the temp - none of the oomph.
Temps in the shade were 102-103F with track temps over 120F that weekend. It was friggin hot! Coolant would top out and stabilize at 225F and coolant 265F. Warm but still manageable....
Here the temps topped out at 200F coolant and 239F oil on a 75F day after 10 hard laps, so about 20 min full bore. Keep in mind HPR is at 5200' so significantly thinner air which reduces cooling efficiency. The elevation at Miller is 4300' so still high.

Will do. Car is currently undergoing a diet and should drop approximately 300lbs bringing it down to 2750lbs from the current 3050. Downforce should also go up significantly to over 1000lbs at 150mph. Horsepower should go up roughly 50-75whp. All this should add up to a substantial overall increase in performance. Chris and I should be in testing phase later this fall.
Not exactly 996 content - well my nice 996TT is in the picture. Not all track days end well. I seem to have blown up the engine in the track VW. I guess that means that I'll have to use the black 996TT for the next 6 track days, or until I swap the VW engine with my new spare. I did turn a 1:29.6 in really heavy traffic which is a good time for this car. I need to freshen up the spare VW engine before I install it.
I was in the same run group as Jason - until I blew up the car. About 1/3 of the drivers in the group has no business being in the group. It was so bad the event lead came over to me and asked how it was going, because she claimed I was an accomplished driver (debatable) in a slower car (true) so I should have a good viewpoint. I was sort-of distracted by my engine failure so we didn't talk much. I complained about the Camaro and a silver E46 - both drivers failed to give a point by even when I stuck to them for many laps. I think this was the second worst session I've every driven.
Jason obviously needs to be in a faster run group, his car and driving is obscenely fast. When I ran my VW in advanced last time it was a fantastic session, except the track workers kept hitting me with blue flags - despite my pointing by all the trailing cars within 1 corner - it was so bad I had to complain about it. They must have misplaced the blue flags yesterday as I saw none even when they were obviously needed.
I talked with one of the advanced group drivers (the white Camaro driver) that I know pretty well, he's fast and said the advanced group yesterday was not much better.
Oh well, these are the things we have to deal with at TNIA. It takes a lot of cars on track to cover the costs and sometimes we suffer for a cheap track day.
Aaron (theprf) is indeed an accomplished and experienced driver. In addition to being fast, he is entirely predictable and deliberate with his actions on track, courteous and safe.
He was the perfect person for the event chair to speak to with regards to the assessment of participants.
No damage to the 911 - it was 46 miles away at home.
My VW Corrado's VR6 finally packed it in. I guess 70 to 80 track days running supercharged at 150% rated power, with R-comps pulling 1.1G in the corners, with oil temps at 320F was too much. I thought it blew a head gasket, now I think it's got a cracked head or cylinder. Luckily it's a $250 engine so I can install another without too much financial hit.
Uh, OK. Here's a short video clip of a good lap where Jason makes an appearance. This was after I cut through all the traffic, which took 7 laps. My VW's about the same straight line speed as Jason's 996. It will be obvious that #1 I can't put the power down in corners despite having a limited slip diff and #2 I can't manage anything like the cornering ability of Jason's car, which is not surprising because I'm driving essentially a 1985 VW Golf complete with a beam rear axle.
If you can ignore the squealing NT05's on my car, you can tell Jason's car sounds pretty good. Man those NT05's are the LOUDEST 200 treadwear tires in the universe; they're slippery too. Do not recommend.
You Tube
Was that a recent TNIA?
I was on wait list, then the green light to go came the night before, so I couldn't make it.
I really want to get to Pocono for TNIA soon, only about 90 miles.
no it was Motorsport Enthusist or MoE. Havent done a tnia they look a little too crazy, unregulated, to me. To be honest pocano clockwise was not that great
Still cannot travel to WA to get to my favourite tracks, but just did an event at VIMC (Vancouver Island Motorsports Circuit). It's a bit like a roller coaster, with lots of elevation change and LOTS of corners. No high speed section, 2nd and 3rd gears only. Very technical and a lot of fun.
https://youtu.be/9q0O9AdjJLo
Dude - F'n awesome, its like a drift track. Looks like tons of fun, hoping they got a pic of you hanging a wheel in the air... guessing that went down somewhere on that track.
ETA - car looks dope in the thumbnail pic - APPROVED
Haha. For sure! It was a ton of fun. Still, can't wait to get back to The Ridge in Shelton, WA. Car is running awesome BTW. So happy with the new sway bars and the numeric cables. Girodiscs coming next
Thanks man. It's been a "work in progress" for 8 years now.

Here is the last session from Lime Rock yesterday. The Carrera 4S and I catch the TTRS around lap 7 and then we stayed together until the end. We all started here exactly 2 years ago. Very fun session.

Back in the day, (2012) Laguna Seca Turn 11. The all important set up to get into the throttle as soon as possible for the start/finish straight into turn 2 braking.
Because car is going to run in PCA stock class engine is almost totally stock, not even any air box mods. Running Moton remote shocks, a gearbox cooler, deep sump, gears are stock which really hold cars back compared to other race cars I have had with gearing, my sold 2001 Cup with gears video attached same Sebring track. Brakes are stock on 996 with Pagid yellow pads in front and blacks on the rear.
They are all fun but need to learn to drive based on their strengths and weaknesses.

Nice driving Rich. Great tutorial on using the entire track. 👍
What have you done to solve for oil starvation and oil pressure stability under the rules.
Good info Rich. Out of curiosity, where did you put the expansion tank? Overall, you must have found a solid formula to keep using the 996. Appreciate the insight.
Traqmate have yet to connect my GoPro using a separate Sony camera like the picture quality and sound recording better than my GoPro. I run car on DOT Hoosier R7s or Hankooks.

This is from our last NE 996 outing to Lime Rock. The weather was getting a little dicey. We got light rain at times. In the last session I worked on getting the lines through Big Bend and the Left Hander. Doing the Left hander correctly sets up the Right Hander and the No Name Straight. This is the slowest part of the track so my goal is to minimize the distance driven = minimize the time spent at low speed.
It's hard to keep the speed down to stick the inside of the Left Hander. The driver who has the track record in SM2 told me to trak out no further then the middle between Big Bend and the Left Hander. That seems to work when I can manage to do it correctly.
Here's two-ish laps with me following Jack
@Jnelso
. There were only two other cars on track as the foreboding weather had scared everyone else away. No in car camera this time as it fell off my back window sometime during the session
.

I'm excited to be back there and not have ABS issues nagging. Happy I got the experience last time despite the issues, feel somewhat prepared to go out on Tuesday and push a bit.
And to have the 996 gang there in force, weather looks to be good - couldn't ask for more !
ETA - Sick thumbnail with the Lightning - badass
Raw and no telemetry but still fun to watch. Lime Rock 9/7/21. Pay attention to how close the tire walls are. These laps were 1.8-11, Zbomb was doing these at 1.02-4....... big *****.

Headed to New York Safety Track for Track Touring sessions with Central New York PCA with a spirited 90 mile drive across Upstate New York with a dozen Porsches.
Great weather and great day.
09/14/2021
I ended up in the grass on the previous corner, and we're not the first to do that... judging from all the tire marks! Just a little lift to tighten the line OMG not THAT much.
I made it out to Lime Rock as the only one of our little group a couple days ago. This was a TNIA event. Looking a little lonely without the company.
The first session I had another fuel pump failure... hose came off of the "Y" fitting and left me stranded on the grass in Turn 3. I had to get flat towed off the track, ugh.
That little connection circled in red.. it is genuine Gates submersible rubber fuel hose and it was secured with an Oetiker clamp and it still let go. I had it fixed in time to run the 3rd session.
So cool to see the cars on track from the outside perspective.
They look right at home 😎
The video Aaron got of my car is still my favorite of any footage I have of it.
That may be my new favorite vid. That guy was super cool and drives a Ford Focus ST. It was amazingly good on the track. The vid almast makes it look lile i know what im doing.
Also, "porsche lawnmower" was funny as $hit.
Of to subscribe to his youtube channel.
it looks like im off the wait list at NJMP for the delaware pca event next weekend, yea.
Out at Barber Motorsport Park with Chin on Sept 11-12. The weather was perfect and the weekend a ton of fun. The track is a blast- Chin always puts on great events with a great fun group of drivers.
Found the below vid of a driver chasing me
Thank you- It is a fun track car stripped out, full cage, Moton shocks, SSK, fire suppression, electric power steering, FSI engine (thank you Jake Raby!), IMS Solution, PSM/ABS disabled, oil cooler, large numbers the more "experienced" station workers routinely tell me "thank you"- hahahahaha, and other misc. items. Obviously, it is not the fastest out there. However; the rawness of it makes it a lot of fun to pilot around.
They were on the car when I purchased it- Thus; easy to pull the trigger on that option- hahahahahahaha. They are nice and have worked without any issue- rock solid keeping the car planted.
That's even better. You didn't have to worry about the initial cost of the motons and set-up. How are they driving around town? Do you adjust them for track and street or just keep them at one setting?
Still haven't had the ***** to get the 911 to the track yet but still been running this thing hard including a few hillclimbs.
In car from the hillclimb.

I can't believe how large the group is this weekend at NJMP. 166 people on Saturday! Hope there isn't too much traffic. Only 49 right now when I go in two weeks.
i think they.will have 5 or 6 run groups. So 28 - 34 per group. Gonna be a little crowded but its a 2.2mi track. I think we ran 25 with MoE and it was fine.
As usually the car was excellent but the driver sucks. I had an incredible coach, Sean Dempsey, he racese imsa and wrl enduro. He is usually $800 a day for coaching but he gives back for the DE pca event. I was very lucky they put him in the car with me. I was really hoping that i would be able to work on some advanced technic but i had too many problems with the basics. I have to break about 35 years of street driving habits and reduce my level of self preservation. Basically my hands and brain wont do what my ears r hearing.
Here is my only track vid. Second day, 4th session, sun was low and they combined green and blue. So there was some traffic. The 3rd lap was the fastest of the session, but i had faster laps earlier when we were blue only. As with my other vids the audio sucks and they r shacky because its my phone, sorry.

Saturday dining at State Street Pizza- I know you all love food pictures
Sunday morning- ready with with used tires with a bit more rubber put on for the day

@zbomb
ive only tracked/autocrossed my corvette and a bunch of dumb Hondas. Can I do 1 track day in my C4S safely?
disclaimer, I'm a slow idiot and I don't think my reflexes are fast enough to starve an engine
That's a loaded question.
1. Primarily - safety is up to you on track. If you are risk adverse, it will serve you well.
2. My opinion - if the car blows up on your 1st track day - it was going to do so anyway at some point in the near future be it on the road or the track. So, go for it ! The cars (as you can see from the posts in this thread) are pretty mega on track... sneaky fast and to me, really easy and forgiving to drive.
I'm another slow idiot. I did 3 HPDE events in mine and found metal in my oil filter afterwards. My first HPDE was my first time ever on a track and even I was able to starve my engine during at least one of these events.
[Image-only post; no author-written text. Original image references:]
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlist.com-vbulletin/2000x1333/tracknightinamerica_tsmp_20211005_cs1_0941_25e552fb12df78cfd2ddeaa14d3eba26e8203134.jpg
Brake fluid and the standard PCA pre-track inspection at an indy. I also made sure the cooling system was up to snuff.
I did not install a deep sump, UAOS, swap in Driven racing oil, etc. These were first time lead/follow HPDE events. It was my first time on a track and I was just trying to learn how to drive the car properly. I didn't think of it as "going racing". While I knew an oil starvation issue existed, I thought it would only be a factor in orange or red group racing situations where you're pulling more Gs.
Tough to guarantee that the 3 HPDE events had anything to do with the metals. They may already have been there from wear and tear over time. However, if you changed your oil right before each event, then there is a pretty good clue that you have some internal wear and tear happening relatively quickly.
A lot of variables such as last time you changed your oil, condition of oil, condition of your bores, service history of the car, previous owners driving habits on the street and/or track and therefore engine condition and weak links can all play into it.
If it were my car I would do the following:
1. Get your oil tested now before you change your oil to start a baseline. This will tell you what's floating around in your oil, as well as provide clues as to what components are wearing.
2. Get your car into your Indy and have them take off your oil pan to see what's in there, as well as check the oil filter for more fragments.
3. While your pan is off, get your shop to scope your bores to see what you got for bore conditions.
4. Don't know what oil you run, but the oil test, pan analysis, bore scope, will all tell you if you have a problem brewing or not, as well as what oil you should probably be running. LN Engineering provides a boatload of info on their website on the different types of oil you can run based on your situation. I suspect your Indy has suggestions as well.
5. Make sure you change your oil in the spring after you take the car out of its winter hibernation. If you are planning on tracking your car, make sure you have fresh oil in your engine before the event, and then immediately change it after each event. Lastly, change your oil before winter. There is a theme here...fresh oil often.
If you want more info on how to prep your car, just let me know and I will gladly tell you what has worked well for me from 2004-2018 and what I am doing to prep it for the 2022 season.
But right now, you need to start a baseline of seeing what's inside your engine so you can take the appropriate next steps to facilitate engine longevity for the street and track.
These engines are very durable on the street and track if you do the right things.
All good ideas. This is something I've been dealing with since May. I posted about it in the below two threads. I do have UOAs and have worked with an indy to look at it. I'm actually taking it to a second indy up in LA on Friday. After that I'm going to post an update.
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...il-filter.html
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...er-update.html
Right. I forgot to mention I'm going to post an update next week after I visit this other indy.
The first thread got closed because someone (not me) decided to go on a rant and criticize some sponsors.
Yes that's a really great day!
I have not run that track, it keeps coming up on my feed from motorsportreg.com. It looks nice, I will have to get up there next year.
yeah its a nice track, decent runoff where it needs to be and fun to drive. Not much in the way of facilities but I think there will be some serious expansion in the next year or so.
More crappy phone video. From yesterday at Lightning track, njmp. I really need a telemetry/video upgrade over the winter.

Track map with my fastest lap.
Which mount do you use?
Are you using the phone with track addict to to also record the video? I had my video and yours going at the same time on my computer.
This is what I use with the forward facing camera.

It's kind of weird them giving you point bys on their right between 5 and 7. I would stay on the racing line when pointing by there.
I had a great time there last Friday. Will definitely be back next year.
Its a seasucker mount on the back glass. Yes im running the video with track addict. I really need a rammount roll cage bracket to stabilize it. Im probably gonna get an aim solo2 this winter and didnt want to waste money buying stuff for the phone.
This event was with MoE and they didnt have rule for the side u had to pass on between 4 and 5. Depending on the car, i passed the direction of the point. I have vid of an earlier session where i was in traffic the whole time and made a bunch of passes. Maybe ill upload it?
Edit:
Here it is, the middle is pretty boaring and at the end i was running down a blue camero but a 997t decided to hit the gas on the front straight instead of letting me by. Cost me 6 sec on the next lap and then the session ended.
The early cars pointed me to the right and the turbo to the left between 5 and 6.
https://youtu.be/_MsNPvlXGqE
Yup... that's why I use a GoPro... but the data integration to your video is seamless, wires into car, records by itself etc... which is why I will pick one up if I can steal one used. The GoPro works and with track addict, it gets you the data overlaid on the video, but the whole setup is klugy and GoPros suck as far as I'm concerned with **** like deciding its going to shut itself off in the middle of a session as a for instance.
I enjoyed that track alot.
I was there one track day in 2016, it was my first event in yellow run group.
There was an off in almost every session.

The "quiet" vids were with everything OEM and camera mike inside the cabin. The "loud" vids were when the car had OEM sport mufflers fixed to the open position mated to 200 cell Fabspeed sport cats and an extension mike attached to the rear bumper.
Here is a vid testing the setup:

I don't remember exactly. It's been quite a while. I believe it's one of those microphones you can pin on your shirt or lapel. I just duct taped it to the bumper, connected it to a long extension cord, routed it along the engine bay, and then connected to the microphone input on my old GoPro attached to the roll bar. I just googled GoPro lapel microphone a long time ago. Maybe this:

I almost regret coming back to this 996 forum. This thread and all your posts and photos are making me nostalgic. I miss this old girl, my 2002 996 C4S. She and I matured together in the DE world, from green novice group to red fast expert group. I drove her from 2002 until I traded her in 2016, total of 14 years and almost 70,000 bulletproof miles. Here's my favorite track photo: late afternoon run at VIR October 2016, one of my last track runs with the car. It's the left turn double apex sweeper, so the the left side is unloaded. Enjoy your 996's,people, they are wonderful cars on and off the track.
Over the weekend on a spectacular fall day I did some untimed open autocross, first time on an autox course.
Then followed up with some hoonage on the wet skidpad.
Which resulted in throwing the serpentine belt:
and a 126 mile tow home. It was fun anyway! Lesson learned, carry a spare serpentine belt next time.

I know we have probably crossed paths over the years. Got a 2002 996 #183. See avatar picture at Blackhawk with wife in the passenger seat. Hope to cross paths this season.
Hey guys. I FINALLY took my 996 to the track for the first time this past weekend. Give a watch and a like if you will. There are some killer spec 911s featured.

A few good laps at NJMP Tunderbolt today. Again bad audio and i still cant figure out how to set up the Aim and smartycam telemetry correctly.

Great pics i might have to buy that pic of me deffending against the camero even if it was for only 1 turn

The session Z was taking pics i kinda forgot to fuel up so i had to get off track before i was "that guy", so it wasnt his fault.
@theprf
Very happy to see this, look forward to LRP
It was some mic I had laying around out of an old VC unit.
It's soldered directly to the usb cable. Now that I know it works will wire one with a jack so it can be a disconnected easily.
Have to post this one now. JC was not in the white group so we didn't get to run together. Last session of the day was green so we asked to go out with them. Given the go ahead with instructions to not "terrorize the students".
I thought I hung with him pretty well, he can do 137 in 4th with the 996 only about 124.

Here's my 996 at Gingerman from a few weeks ago. This was one of the better laps I managed to string together. Still figuring out the set up. Ls3 swap makes it a bit more forgiving

Dig it and love that you included all the data.
What are you using to capture it ? If it's an Aim system, I'd love if you could share the logs and setup data of the car. With regards to hardware, what are you using for: oil pan, oil cooler, radiators and any tips and tricks in general.
Thanks again for posting !
Schattenbaum is a good group. It is pretty easy to get your lap times from video.
Looks like about 1:43 at the lap starting at 18:46
Did you have an instructor? Who was it?
I dont think my set up will benefit a m96 since its all LS3 stuff. But even with a 10 quart pan, coolers, accusump, so on...didnt do a good enough job of holding pressure. Its actually all apart right now for a dry sump. Everything for data is AIM, I can share logs if you still want them, but again, its LS.
Yea I was solo by this video but i had Jeff Rotella. Awesome dude and his whole gang treated me like family. Great 2 days and I really enjoyed that track!
Fwiw, I have my billsteins set at stiffest in rear and half way in front. tarret sway bars set stiffest in rear and lightest in front. No aero. On my car I c an rotate the car better in combination with using the rear end (lsd & throttle). It will most likely change when I put on the gt3 front splitter. You and your car is looking good on the track.
The concessis is the photo was taken right after the first set of curbing into the bus stop. The wheel is airborn because u r suppose to murder the apron and i did.
I think i will drop the front 1 before my next trip to njmp and see if i feel a difference.
I get it. All good. Quite frankly I like the picture. Just talking about the set-up per sway bars comments. May or may not be relevant given your set-up. It took me a number of outings to get the right mix. Aero throws another monkey wrench in it.
You get the back end to come around using the lsd with the throttle. Tight turns like after the carousel into the tight right hander and then the tight left. 3 & 4 at Blackhawk. Front tires will push creating understeer so you can turn it with the throttle.
You can also use the throttle to steer through the carousel at Blackhawk. Let's say you enter the carousel with pretty good speed and your circumference starts to widen to the point your entry into the chicane will be off considerably, you can very, very quickly lift then get on the throttle hard where your back end will get light and rotate ever so slightly and then by punching the throttle, the weight will rotate back to the rear end and you can slingshot thru the chicane. It's tricky if you don't get it right because you will loose the car. But once you figure it out, it's a pretty simple maneuver. You gotta do it with a lsd and without Psm or you will have a few problems.
Get it in steady state in a corner. Add a bit of throttle, then let off the throttle. Instant rotation. Be ready to catch it because it does rotate fast!
That is the only way I can throttle steer the automatic transmission AWD car.
Either way. Could also stiffen the rear spring rates.
It is a really great picture. Happens to everyone.
I can't find the picture of my VW on two wheels at Turn 4 at Thompson - the slow tight right-hander.
In my video of wg. Turn 9 is a constant radius slow turn. If u enter early your radius will be too tight under throttle. I correct this by lifting and the car will steer out. If u watch the video carefully u can see the wheel turn when i take the turn wrong. Thats not steering input with my hands, its the throttle lift. A may take a few times of viewing but u will see the lift in the throttle bar too.
Theres a turn at barber motorsports where you go down a slight hill into a steeper uphill right hand turn that you can have some fun with as well using the throttle. Been 5 years since I was there and can't remember the turn number.
Yeah, I can easily get the rear end to come around without throttle. Until I learned that 911s love trail braking, I was braking in a straight line and having a hard time keeping up in the corners. But now with trail braking, its great.
The lift works for me too. My buddys E46 M3, he doesnt have to lift. Any throttle moves the rear end out, and the more the throttle, the more it moves. In my 911, the more the throttle, the more the understeer.
I just had my Guard lsd rebuilt. Didn't know there was a problem until eurosport dropped the engine and went thru everything. Found the bearing in the lsd was loose and then the "while we are in there" rebuild took shape. Glad I had it done. Don't have to worry about it for another 10 years. Wouldn't be surprised if a good number of factory LSDs need a rebuild. Definitely have more power going to the wheels afterwards. Car feels like it gained a bunch of torque. No question it could be wishful thinking but it is easier to throw around now.
If the cars understeering you are likely braking too early and subsequently getting back to throttle too early. I would suggest trying to trying to brake as far into the corner as you can in most cases, use all that real estate where the car would push if you got on the throttle to instead push your braking zone later, and deeper, you will then get on the gas where you have shifted more of that weight to the front outside tire and the car will push less.
This will also help to maximize your V Min and help you carry more speed through the corner.
NOTE - the rear gets lively on the brakes and the more you push this concept, the more you will find yourself really wheeling the car to get to the apex when things will settle down a bit...cause our cars don't make a lot of power and have big rear tires and great weight over them.
Sorry for the long time between posts, here are the latest pics from the 5/6&7 weekend at Grattan in Michigan. Tire at that time was the M/L Sport Cup 2 (TW 240Fr/180Rr, I know stupid). Looking forward to getting the APEX Forged/RT660 set-up on for the 5/28&29 weekend also at Grattan for a comparo. What tire pressures is everyone running on the RT660s?
I might be back out on track soon... I dropped my car off at the race shop for corner balance and alignment, with the new to me Moton coilovers and the GT2 front wheel carriers installed. Those are the new Apex VS5RS wheels. Tires are NT01 305/35 and 245/40. Should be great fun when it's finished!
Saturday at Palmer in my first time going clockwise. I liked it ok until downhill into 6 and 5. Seem to be coasting too much but this was an early session and was driving the whole thing in 3rd getting familiar with it.
One thing I did find out is I was at 95.6db going down the straight. So it looks like the cats will have to go back on for LRP and Tremblant.
You Tube
That's my favorite direction at Palmer. There are a few curbs that are in the "wrong" locations for this direction and can trick you into turning in early. I adore the section that's downhill through turns 4-3-2-1.
Great footage and incredible sound. Question: what did you use to record the exhaust? Did you run a Mic outside? If so which one? Felt like I was watching the movie LeMans.
I got a cheap SJCAM to keep in the car.
Then made my own usb cable to power and use an external mic. I had a microphone from a video conferencing system that I mounted between the license plate lights.
I think any action camera mic would work similarly.
Yeah it makes it kind of fun to watch.
Just got back from Mid-Ohio, WOW what an incredible weekend. 3 perfect weather days. For me, it went like this....
Day 1) Suspension noise problems, trying to diagnose, messaging to Zbomb for support (Note: penetrating oil on all mono-***** in the rear finally got rid of this noise)
Day 2) Accel Pedal Failure (95% torn from the floor), messaging to Zbomb for support (Note: Flexible epoxy not effective, Gorilla tape FTW, Tarett Motorsports Pedal on order)
Day 3 first session) Instructor takes my car out first, sets record (for my car) lap time and record lap speed on the straight, pedal holding on
Day 3 2nd session) I drive with Instructor, he is pushing me "foot to the floor", I set my PB by about 1.7 seconds faster and stop right there (pedal looseness noted)
For those MidO folks, any pointers or advice is always appreciated.

Sorry i cant help with mid-o tips. I have only neen there once and that was early last year so i was too "green" to even understand how hard that track is. Hope to be back next year.
As for as the accererator peddle, i have a decent fly by wire unit if u need it.
I always think i have my foot to the floor but then i look at the telemetry and im disapointed with myself
.
Thanks DeJeeper! I ordered the Tarett motorsports accel pedal and dropped the car off yesterday to the shop (fingers crossed they can get me in). Please share your idea, it might help me and other in the future!
Its hard to tell from the view but i remember if u were not fully on the apron u wernt doing it right it looks like u have a little bit more room.
When i was there i had the old set up with the 3.4l and street tires. I really had to get to the edge to be decent. At that time i didnt even have a timer much less video.
Lately all of my improvent efforts have been about my breaking proceedure. Unfortunately im not good enough to recogonise if u r doing it right? Next step my be a Garmin as they r all in 1 and give instant feedback.
Thank you and agreed on the aprons, from watching IMSA races, there is a lot more room! Yes I have the Catalyst and am starting to use it. I had it on when my instructor was driving so comparing the laps is a good idea.
I would also like to add that an animated instructor is the best motivation. Looked like he was having more fun then u
. I also agree that comparing those 2 sessions will pay off. The good thing about the garmin is the feedback is instant but the bad is that its predicton limited to your actual driving, not what is possible. Since u have your instructor laps u should be able to get some good info and a realistic comparison.
Here is my last session yesterday. Had a rather slow cayman in the advance group that held me up with two corvettes bearing down on me at 9:53 then basically stopped on track after turn 1.
As always great to hang out with

OK, 3 track weekends in a row...Need to spend some quality time with the fam this week
This past weekend was Grattan in Belding Michigan, via Rally Sport Region PCA. My brakes felt really soft, the Fr pads ended up crumbling, luckily I had a spare set of stock pads. Switched out the pads on Saturday and got back to business. Really had to change the braking zone and pressure, but got that sorted late Saturday.
Instructor Drive Late Saturday: Really incredible time with a 996 C2. the ride along really taught me a ton about line and vehicle limit performance.
You Tube
You Tube
Then on Sunday morning, the conditions were perfect, got a PB the first session and basically came in and let the car take a rest for the day.
Again the HTR660 Tires are incredible and clearly faster than the ML SC2. I will be comparing to the NT01s hopefully in 2 weeks at this same track.
Thanks and again, I appreciate any pointers or guidance on driving line or approach.

2 vids from Watkins. I think i had a successful 2 days. I cut 9.5 sec from my pb 3 weeks ago. Brad is the silver 996 passing me in both. He is a maniac on the track and got his pb by 5-6 sec too.

A little bad luck this morning at njmp t-bolt. I was able to keep the car in the track and get into the pitts. Luckily the track only an hour from home so now im waiting at the tire shop for my spare set of tires to be mounted. Ill be ready for day 2. Big thx to brad, hbdunn, for letting me borrow his suv so i didnt have to pack up the toter.
Dont really know. It either dropped air and blew out the sidewall or the sidewall failed.
They probably had track 20-25 days or so. I guess they were just used up.
You guys bring up a good point which is how many heat cycles for a particular tire. Isn't as critical for a novice because they just aren't fast enough to wear down tires and brakes quickly. But for those that are advancing quickly, tires and brakes wear down much quicker. At the end of the day you want safety and grip. You loose both as the tires wear.
Leaving street tires out of it, here is the typical number of 25-30 min heat cycles i shot for and then replaced the tires. Always an exception to the rule depending on track temps, how fast you are and a judgement call if you have enough rubber left to do one more session.
Hoosiers (slicks) 6-8
Sport Cup 1 (100) 8-10
Toyo Proxies (100) 8-10
Sport Cup 2 (200) never used them, best guess is 12
Falken 660 (200) never used them, best guess 12
New R71RS (200) never used them, best guess 12
Nitto (100) never used them, they do seem more durable than other 100 tires. No guess.
Would love to hear what guys are getting for heat cycles. Especially interested in the Falken 660 and new Bridgestone R71RS.
All that loose rubber debris in the tire is from running with low/no air pressure, I have seen it countless times even on street tires...
A good investment would be an aftermarket TPMS system.
I have an aftermarket TPMS system on Sally, and if it only saves one tire from early failure, it will have paid for it's self, not to mention the safety factor...
I agree with skip on this one. AIM has these that work with there software.
It was also suggested that iay have coreded the tire. By the amount of tread on the tire i do t think that happened but i do have the camber at 3.2 so the inside may have worn heavy.
PA-LEASE. Brad had to hit his brakes for 5 sec for me to get by him. He is a maniac in that car. I probably wont have my vids up for a week due to service issues in the area im in.i have several of his 3.6l pulling away from my gt3 motor.
Jason arrives with the Black Beauty at Thompson for its maiden voyage
I know its in here some place
Jason Aaron and myself had a good day at Thompson Motor Sports Park yesterday.
I had a great day Jack ! SO fun being at the track with you guys again !
Oh... and yeah, I was looking for my shoes - YES, I forgot my shoes. I went to the track in slippers. Once again, for what seems like the 100th time Aaron saved my *** and swung by my house to pick up my driving Vans...
So here is the in car of blowing a tire at 80mph around a curve. Im glad it wasnt very dramatic. If u listen closely u can hear the tire in the turn before because my mic is in the rear bumper.

getting back out to Gingerman this weekend. First Time out with a new Dailey Dry Sump set up, quite the difference for pressure stability lol (this is with a ls2 engine, incase anyone wonders why it sounds strange). Engine was solid all weekend...about 11 sessions.

its 2.25 miles in 1.37sec for me (should be 4-5sec faster) with a blind corner along with 2 other complicated turns. It deff requires concentration. Hope to show it to u next year.

Yeh u got some suspension/shock work to do. Car looked real tight, there has to be more balance in there for those heavy springs. I just looks u r fighting the car on every bump.

I got my favorite "go fast" coach in the car and learned some stuff. Next session i got my pb at njmp t-bolt. I still hit some traffic and missed some shifts or i would have had more laps in the 1.35s

One more from yesterday's last session. Followed this GT3RS for about three laps until my fire extinguisher comes loose from the bracket coming out of turn 8. Must have caught it with my pant leg getting in the car, will make sure to check it from now on.

Just as a relative speed comparison he was less the 4 sec slower then a straight up race car SPC on hoosiers that my instructor was driving a few weeks ago. Brads an animal on the track with struts for a suspension.
Told Brad today, I don't know anyone who gets as much out of their equipment as he does. He makes it look pretty easy to boot (I know how not easy it is
)
Well done man, that was a fun ride along from my couch for sure.
Here's a good stretch from my day yesterday. Finally getting the hang of the new bits and pieces despite looking like I'm flailing away at it compared to Brad.

Hopefully people will appreciate this. Last session, my gearbox is ****ed. I run up on this Miata and he doesn't pass me by, when I get over my annoyance, I realize he is absolutely slaying the track. He hangs it out pretty good, I enjoyed the show for a couple laps, hope you guys do too.

We ran as high as 4th overall, until one of our driver's had an incident with a tire wall. We finished with the car running P7 in class and 18th OA.
Also about 8 hours worth of video of several different driver's on Rennpart's youtube channel:

So this was exciting... i feel better about being ready to be in an advanced group after being aware enough see clues and flaggers to avoid this accident.

PCA Club Race at Eagles Canyon Raceway was another fun adventure. Fortunately, 922 had no contact. Saturday was great with the weather cooperating. Sunday the rain came and 922 went up on the trailer as it was not prepped for wet conditions. A few pictures:
Friday night driver fuel at Fuzzy's Tacos as I am sure you all are very interested. Helped make the car/driver meet minimum weight requirement- hahahahaha Good thing as I was pulled for random weight and tech inspection after Sprint 1 race with all good.
Top of the Grill provides eats
Banter area between runs
A few unfortunate incidents. Going around a turn a driver clipped another driver just after turn resulting in a t-Bone with both cars coming to a stop on track in T formation. Then 2 cars following split around them, and then this 3rd car (yellow boxster) only saw it after the other 2 had split the carnage, and had no time to evade and became part of the carnage. Ugghhhh!
Another casualty
Bummer for the driver's involved to end their weekend with significant damage. If I get some time, I'll try to post up a vid of some of the Saturday fun.
It's about time that you get another one. Nobody can go cold turkey like you did. Withdrawals, shakes, sweats, irritability are all symptoms of not enough 996 in your life.
New owner is a hoot!!
Driving the snots out of it.
Tracked in Fort Lauderdale a couple weeks ago, he hit 145 on the straight, I owned it 8+ years, only hit 135 at WGI and NJMP.
And he is a
octogenarian.
Nicest fella that could possibly end up with my car.
He is going to get back into HPDE instruction.
He used to have two different Porsche Race teams, drive and own.
His IMSA license expired.
The new owner used to race at Sebring.
He belongs to a PCA chapter around there, called Space Chapter or something like that, not sure of correct name.
The Barber Motorsport Track is like the Disney World of Motorsports !! So beautiful !!!
I was in charge of repairs/complaints on all the Porsche cars and SUVs for the Porsche Driving School there..The dealership I retired from was just a few miles( back road) to the Track..
I have done many a lap there to diagnose problems on the 996 back in the day...
Is your name Michael Brown? I saw a Michael Brown with a 996 on the roster for the PCA DE ..( my local Chapter) ...
Finally able to contribute to this thread. Completed my HPDC event with the Potomac Region this weekend. Slalom, threshold braking and skid pad exercises followed by 3x20min hot lap sessions. Had a great time and car did well. Zero brake fade. A buddy from work who has done a lot of track days came to hang and check my tire pressures and temps.
Took my 996 to the track for the first time last weekend. Did the road course at E-Town. The car felt great at the track, I definitelly have a ton to learn as the car is much more capable than I.
I am going to NJMP in a little over a week. I am beyond hooked, can't wait.
Never heard of them but it seems like a solid group. If u didnt know u can check out motorsportreg.com for other groups and dates. Motorsport Enthusiest has 4 packs that can save u money if u can do mondays and fridays. I use their season pass.
Ther garmin is deff the way to fo if getting into hdpe. Im still fighting to get my new aim stuff working. The engine oil pressure is still off (chose wrong sensor) tpms is dead, steering angle needs calibrating and i think i just got that figured out.
Got a cool but sunny day in at njmp t-bolt. I was about 3sec off my pace because the track never warmed up. Everyone was fighting for grip. I think the new exhaust sounds good but it deff has a huge power flat spot from 4500-5500 rpm. Contacting fvd about a tuner now. It really effected my exit power when i short shift in a couple of the turns.

TNIA Daytona
TNIA. Daytona 4-20-23
Can take track day at Daytona off my bucket list. Ran Daytona road course with TNIA last week, most fun I ever had on a road course. Sebring next.
Rich, thanks for your reply, not sure when I will do Sebring, cant make the May dates. There appears to be a couple of clubs that have dates at Sebring. I like TNIA because at my age three twenty minute sessions are enough for me in one day.
Yup brad is a maniac and not afraid to push that car. Hopefully ill have one of our sessions up on youtube tonight. I know brad got a pb in sunday and i was close to mine.
Here is my vid. My rear bumper mic is out so the audio kinda sucks.

First track day down. It was a beautiful day at Thompson - except for all the guys who crashed. Out of 1 hour on track I got in 12 hot laps @ 85 seconds each.
It's not worth loading the video as it's mostly waving black flags. Very unusual for TNIA events; drivers usually stay within their limits.
Welp 6/11 is fast approaching at Thompson. Worst case the gt3ish always has a passenger side seat.
Any other north east 996s or track junkies want to show up for the Mass Tuning event? There should be 5 or 6 of us there having fun.
https://www.motorsportreg.com/index....347EC3B11A89C2
I'll be there. With a working car this time.
Went yesterday to Thompson for another try. I finally convinced my buddy Brian to bring his Shelby GT350 out. I was hoping for an 8200 RPM 4th gear fly-by, he was shortshifting at 7000 because the car only has 2800 miles on it. It does sound glorious, a 5.2L, 8200 RPM, flat-plane V8. Brian reported coolant, oil, transmission, and rear axle temps were only 10-15 degrees higher than regular street driving. It looks like Ford had a good design for this car, too bad it's out of production.
Best lap from a recent trip to COTA. This was on RE71rs that corded later that day. Have gone a bit faster on A052, but pretty happy with this lap considering it was hot that weekend and I wasn't wearing my seatbelt
Odering a set of tires jic. Ive already killied a set of nt-01s this season. The weather looks great.
For all those that dont track, if u sign the waiver u can ride shotgun for a session and see what the experience is all about. Come out an hang for the day.
Sundays in CT are a little strange. Opens at 9:00, driver's meeting at 10:30, sessions start at 11:30.
It won't be like that frosty 8AM start last October at Palmer!
I had new rears mounted yesterday, I think I can skate by on my fronts. Have a day at Lime Rock on the 7th weather permitting. I might drop a spare set of used fronts off with Jason to throw in his truck just in case; can't fit them in the car obviously. Or I could rent a trailer and tote the car over behind the Cayenne.
I have an extra helmet so come out and see what it's like. Don't worry I drive slow.

The track is deff a challange to learn but once u do its got a lot to offer. The facilities r also real nice too. The souroundung area is a little tough as most people hotel in Cranberry, about 25 min away. I enjoyed staying at the track and u can have a rv dropped off in the pitts as an alternative to a hotel. The track kinda flys under the radar but shouldnt.
Bad news, Good news, Good news.
Bad: 996 finally had an issue that necessitates a rebuild. Good 1: Now in the queue for a Slakker 3.7L
Good 2: Lucky timing to be sharing a lease with a buddy for an A90 Supra 6MT.
This was my first time at VIR (WOW the VIR Full Version is quite a challenge and amazingly fast). Also a little rusty on embedding the video, so hope that works out.

Info from the trusty technician==>CEL for Cam Solenoids. Cam Deviation running at 3, jumps to 5, back to 3. Increased noise coming from motor, his thinking is pad tensioners. Brad that's awesome! I was there Monday and managed a 1.03.1 with tons of traffic. Garmin claimed a 1.02.2 is possible - then the Catalyst crashed and I lost all data from the day.
That's getting pretty quick! A friend of mine was also there Monday with a yellow C6.
I believe there were 28 cars for our 5 hours of unmuffled track time, so not a lot of traffic.
This guy did 7 laps in my 6. I figure he was averaging under 55 seconds.
Imma cheat a little.

Earlier this year at Lime Rock - optimal lap from the Catalyst. It's really cool how it does this. If that white C7 had not been in my way so much I'd have shaved another 6 tenths off my actual best lap.

Lunch time at summit point main... 72* and the track surface is perfect. Great way to almost end the season... ill be at njmp on monday to close it out.
My last session for the year at Lime Rock. Perhaps if I had not needed to pass that Lotus I could have shaved another 0.7 seconds off and gotten into the 1:01's? Nah, probably not.
@theprf
Always great seeing other people getting these cars on the track instead of worrying about who's carbon fiber trim is the best. Hope we can get to more of the same days next year!
Delaware Aaron and I spent two warm sunny days in West Virginia last weekend, here is my second faster than last year lap. I feel like this track is a slightly bigger Lime Rock, without the up and down.

At least it will give you something to fix this off season.
It is pretty remarkable how reliable your car has been with the abuse its seen this season.
Have you figured out how many hours you put on it this year ?
Just did some quick math based on my calander....
I ran 37 days at 8 tracks with 9 different groups, that included 7 different pca's.
By the general run time amounts for the individual events i estimate 65hrs of track time. To put it lightly the car is worn out. I mean not really but it needs love. All the hiems and uniballs, brakes, rotors, wheel studs and a few other parts will be replaced this winter. All just wear parts. The only other items were the rad, track damage, and i had a wheel stud break. Gonna have all the other studs magnafluxed to see if the remainder r worn out or if it was a fluke. The only motor issues is a leaking variocam sileniod. Seems to be common on these mezger motor and it doesnt effect performance. My motor now has 93k on the clock. Also its a very different part then a m96 motor so it doesnt apply to most here.
What's amazing to me is the amount of lost track time our friends have that pay people a lot of money for their newer cars to work properly, but then have issues.
I ended up with 21 total days, 7 at WG, 14 with my good buddy Aaron to chase.
I could only get 13 track days for about 18 track hours plus 2500 miles driving to/from the tracks. There was so much rain this summer in New England..... no issues at all with my 178,000 mile car.
I continue to be impressed and amazed this 23 year old car can hang with the best there is.
Got my ECR images. Having trouble choosing the hero shot. Here's the options:
or
I usually order a metal print from each track day as an "I did a cool thing" trophy. Makes for fun conversations at the office. To pile on to the conversation - I bought my car in April with 49k miles and a decent maintenance record. I changed the oil twice, did 3 track days for like.... about 6 hours of track time and daily drove it the rest of the time. I guess I had to replace a wheel hub bearing after a 900 mile road trip pretty early on and replaced the brake pads. I think that's been it so far?
I have a pile of parts in the garage and a list of work items to get done before I get back on the track in the spring.
- 996 gauge cluster
- Oil temp display + sender/sensor
- Underdrive pulley
- Spin on oil thing
- 987 engine cover
- 996S throttle body/plenum
- retrofit labs headlight rebuild
I really want to find some 991/981 heated and ventilated seats, but I can be patient there.
I can't wait to get back on the track next year!
New lid... It was time to upgrade the old pyrotect to something...gucci. 2.75LBS, Hans posts installed from the factory and the interior padding is so much better than my previous budget helmet. Hopefully will never have to see how well it does its job.
And keeping in the spirit of the thread... can't wait to do this again.

Hey all the fast boys and girls. I don't know if we have a thread for track day questions so I thought I would start here, please redirect me if we do. I am getting ready for Lime Rock on 4/26 and bought my first helmet a Zamp RZ-60, a cheap budget helmet to get started out. The helmet itself seems fine especially for a new guy but I don't love the way it fits my head, there is too much pressure on my forehead, I have tried multiple sizes to confirm it wasn't too small but the shape is wrong for me. I have now learned I have a "long oval head" (oval from front to back) and the Zamp RZ-60 seems like its more for a round head. I am going to try the Bell M8 next. Does anyone have any recommendations for helmet companies who make helmets for a long oval head?
Nothing is going to beat trying them on. But...

BRANDS AND FITMENTS
That being said, different brands do tend to specialize in certain shapes, giving you a starting point for your search. Heres a breakdown of the helmet brands we carry at Competition Motorsport (including links to each category page) and how they generally tend to fit:
ARAI
:
Intermediate Oval to Long Oval; round heads need not apply.
BELL
:
All shapes. Bell has the largest line-up of helmets in the industry, with head forms ranging from round to long oval. The best way to pick a Bell is to call our helmet experts for help at [phone removed] and let us guide you to the best-fitting models for your head shape.
HJC
:
Round Oval to Intermediate Oval
SCHUBERTH:
Intermediate Oval
SPARCO
:
Round Oval to Intermediate Oval
STILO
:
All Shapes. Sometimes it seems like Stilo uses black magic to make their helmets. They have one head form made using various materials and offering multiple features, yet Stilo helmets fit nearly every head shape. Stilo also offers the ability to customize the thickness of your cheek- and crown-pads, making substantial changes to the fit. Stilo's customizability is extensive, so we suggest talking with a helmet specialist at [phone removed] to maximize this.
@hbdunn
@zbomb
thanks for the info, as always much appreciated friends. Seems like Bell might be better for my head shape I'll see how the M8 fits, if this one doesn't fit right I'll have to get myself to a speed shop that sells helmets and try on a bunch.
Edit- Arai looks like what I need actually, pricey though
Not the best track video, but I hope to make improvements. Still working on getting the Harry's Lap Timer linked and synced with the GoPro. I plan to get back to to the Streets of Willow again (hopefully March).
You Tube
Biggest areas of improvement I know is in the bowl in the back. I think I can gain a lot of time if I figure that out
Always like seeing new people getting out on the track and the bonus is you sharing it with us. Race render works pretty well and the free version lets you do 3 minute videos. Is that in car footage from the phone or gopro?
I'm curious, which configuration did you run and what kind of lap time were you turning? I never really see many 996s at Buttonwillow so it's nice to have a basis for comparison.
Thanks!
It was 13cw. I ran a 2:01 that day, with a 2:00 theoreticalthe car is definitely capable of lower times than that though, Id like to get in the mid 1:50s
You've been hard at work getting ready. Next week will be my last until mid summer
I'll pick up in August with Hallet/ECR/MSR though! I'm getting fast enough now that I can tell I need to get real seats, the stock seats aren't cutting it.
Gotta free up some budget for those ASAP!
Track day at Nashville Super Speedway road course. Once I figure out how to download to the Mac, Ill get some wet laps up. PFC 8 on stock Sebro slotted are really, really good. I was right there with a GT4, GT3, RC F and Snake. They all walked away in the dry, but wet was different story. My theory is the more money at risk makes braking zone a lot earlier and longer.
Garage stall is nice, especially since it rained last two sessions.
Made a little video that was my Angeles Crest drive up to Good Vibes Breakfast Club followed by my PCA Autocross the following day. Still waiting on the pics from the photographer.

PCA Potomac region just had our first DE of the year and 996s were well represented. There were at least 5 that I saw (not including GT3s or Cup Cars), including one with a Jake Raby 3.8 and a supercharged 3.4 with aerokit. And, contrary to popular internet opinion none of them blew up the first time down the front straight😅. Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to get any picts as I was running around all event. I'll have some video soon, but I need to reposition my go pro forward as the view out the windshield is washed out.
Yep, with Potomac. It was quite good event but the winds were pretty bad on Saturday. Sorry you missed it, your car would have loved to stretch its legs there! See you at PittRace in June?
I do like vir but sadly probably not getting there this year.
I doubt i will get to any potomac events this year. Scheduling work and play has been difficult lately. I have a 2 week moab trip planed for sept so the track events have been reduced.
I do have 2 lrp trips and 5 days at watkins on the books along with all my mo-e days so it will still be a busy season.
Made it out to Lime Rock on Thursday the 25th with glorious weather.
The weather was great my driving was only meh. Unlike the great drivers here it takes me a couple sessions to get back into it after a six month layoff.
I met Steve who is on RL driving his 996.2 C2 (left corner of the picture) in a different group. There was also a seal Grey C4S with a GT2 wing and "4.0" on the engine lid... wonder who's that was?
Second day of the season and decided to take a day trip to Watkins. At the lunch break I went one soft from neutral on the front sway and seemed to balance out the car better. They have new curbing at the entrance to the bus stop so that was a big part of the day seeing the best way to do that.
You Tube
I went to my 1st track day, Lime Rock Park with PCA on 4/26. I took my E46 M3 and was in a sea of 911's, Cayman's & Boxster's, it was quite fun. I met a ton of cool people there including
@hbdunn
and it was super fun to have my BMW on track with all sorts of Porsche's from a long hood 912E to brand new GT3RS. Here is a few pics of my out of place BMW among tons of beautiful Porsches, maybe one day I'll take my 996 to a HPDE although the M3 performed very well and held its own on track. Some short videos on track from my Instagram
Norocehcap
Old school/vintage group apperently....we had to send a check in as they have no web foot print. U may have to be a solo driver for this one?
https://www.motorsportreg.com/events...rk-hpde-601360
Also a larger group of 996s will be there 7/1-2 with Mass Tuning
https://www.motorsportreg.com/events...ck-park-682101
Yes very nice to put a face to the name Brad. Jeff was a great instructor, nice guy too. Lots of people have been saying that to me about Lime Rock being a great 1st track, another PCA member at the DE said they wish they did LRP first before WGI as a 1st track.
Just got back from a fantastic weekend at Road Atlanta! I have posted a vid before but today happy to say I beat my time from last year by 2 seconds! So instead, here is the evidence, 1:43.2
[QUOTE=theprf;19473492]Cool. Maybe I should have gone. Spent the weekend changing a wheel bearing on an S6 and welding the frame on a Ranger.[/QUOTEyes]
u should have i could have used your piwis
c u on 6/31
Ha, 10 is brake as late as you dare! It helps when you chasing as opposed as being chased, for me at least. There was a well set up Cayman S that we were playing cat and mouse the whole session.
The difference wasnt in set up (Ohlins/gt3 sways/gt2 tires size and geo/gt3 lca) but I took a very different line for turn 1. I stayed on the gas and braked very late which shot me straight up the hill pointing at the end of the weathertech sign. Set me up perfectly for the tricky turn 2/3 combination.
Such an exhilarating track!
One of these days I am going to have to get up there and represent with my 996 brethren. I'll be at Summit this weekend and there should be a few 996s in attendance.

Haha you found me here too!
A buddy did run his 957CTT at Palmer.
Thanks for the picture Jack, I totally forgot to take any pictures. I did get some great chase video of Aaron's GT3.
P.S. This is what your left front wheel looks like after six sessions at Lime Rock.
Thats the first time Ive ever seen something like that. What a great idea! You even have a cabin for sleeping - unless maybe youve converted it into a tool storage room.
Too many things I just could not stay. Nice lap BTW I'm going to use that as a reference.
Funny thing: while on grid for the 2nd session the organizer asked me if I could take a novice group driver around for a few laps. Sure, why not? After 2 laps he had enough so dropped him off.
That is really fast. We met I believe, I was out coaching my friend in the red cayman gts on Sunday. He got to a 2:07.9.
Hope you had a good time.
Brad
Yes I believe so! Hopefully no scary moments for you in the passenger seat!
I had an amazing time and cannot wait to get back to the Glenn. I am based in St. Pete Florida so it took quite some travel to get there. Ended up stuck in the Detroit airport for 2 days with the crazy outages that occurred globally but it was well worth it.
Dude something about Watkins does not like your car very much!
P.S. Heading down to NJMP Thunderbolt on Aug 26th. One of my buddies up here knows the Trackxperienz owner.
I was there last Friday and Saturday for two warm sunny days. Took a couple of tenths
off my personal best down to a 101.5. Metro PCA has a solo unmuffle day on October 8. Itll be five hours and only two groups.
ha! Yes, thats what I meant. Also I didnt get black flagged the whole two days for sound. Black flag at Palmer doesnt equal getting black flag at lime rock.
There were a couple of cars in the green group that were probably doing 102 second laps notably, a 700 hp mustang and a brand new 992
I went down to NJMP Thunderbolt last week with my buddy Chad. It's a bit of a ride, the round trip was 730 miles. Cayenne got 14mpg with the trailer which is quire respectable, considering I was drafting Chad most of the way
.
We ran with Sam Yau's group called TrackXperienz and there was much heavy hardware: 992 GT2RS, multiple 992 GT3RS, multiple McLaren. Was a good time, I ran 55 laps in 6 sessions plus open track time at the end. The video that Aaron
@De Jeeper
sent me was really helpful and playing lead-follow with Chad was even better.
Loaded up.
At the track.
Man this track is awesome compared to the tracks we have up here. I was able to use all the curbing that I wanted to, surely the Moton dampers were a big part of this. The car just cruised right over the gnarly looking curbs with the only noticeable change the sound from the tires. I never got ice mode from the ABS, it's scary when that happens and it happens a lot on our local tracks. If only it wasn't so darn far away!
I was not able to run my Track Addict datalogger because it was suction cupped to the windshield, this seems like it was a no-no although lots of other people were using similar suction cup mounts. So I have a video from my Catalyst which is bolted to the dash.
You Tube
Good lap. U were a little early into 2 but your turn 1 turn in was good. We just need to get u some more time on the track to increase your speed through 3, 4 and 12. I wish i could have made it.
Thanks, I saw you were carrying at least 80mph through 1-4 so that was my target speed. It requires a lot of confidence to take turn 2 really fast. The first sessions I was dabbing the brake in 4th gear just before 12, the last session I was using maintenance throttle in 5th trying not to unspool the turbos. I am sure I could carry a lot more speed there. Chad told me he uses full throttle from the end of the octopus head until braking for turn 1. Despite that I *almost* caught him up at turn 1, acceleration really starts dropping off over about 120.
Love this Autumn Thunder event at Mid Ohio by Ohio Valley Region. PIcture is of my Instructor Driving (video also on Youtube). Video is of my fastest lap so far (lots of opportunity remaining of course).
You Tube
Very nice driving, how many miles on the rebuild? We are now discouraged from driving students cars, if I did I don't think I would drive it to the limit yours did. Hope it was insured. I missed out on going to MO this year, maybe next.
You should get up to WG sometime, I'm lucky to live only 3.5 hours from there.
From this week. I know the sound is terrible, working on that.
You Tube
Also great driving at WG!
From MidO, yes please join next year, multiple PCA events. Instructors encouraged to drive student's cars. This instructor a personal friend and enjoys setting hot laps with data to support my education.
Yes I will be at WG for the first time on 10/18 (driving the A90) and 10/19 and 20 for pit crew. Track looks like a blast. Potential meet up 10/17?
Slakker info: less than 1000 miles on the rebuild, oil pressures and temps are looking good. Brandon is super supportive on the track usage and checking all the data. Fully warranted and insured.
At least its the end of the season...i only need to have enough tires for 1 more day as i corded 2 sets last weekend. i sis get faster with a 1.29.68 on t-bolt njmp so i hit my goal of under 1.30. I should have the vid posted soon
I wish. I think im basically done for the season. I have a day with Mo-E 11/4 and then ill be out of time, tires and money this season. Let us know how Audi is at vir. I plan on running a nov-ish event there next year.
Hmmmm Thunderbolt or Lightning? I doubt the tattered remains of my budget would absorb another event, but its definitely something to consider. I havent been there in nearly 12 years or so. I have some old footage of me club racing there in the 996. Ill have to dig that out and review it. Ill definitely do T-Bolt next year. Hope there will be an event with good 996 turnout.
Yes it's lightening on Saturday and T-Bolt on Sunday. I have to use up the SCDA days I bought last Black Friday.
I'll ask if they will let you ride with me. I don't see why not, you're a PCA instructor now, correct? With an NJ instructor certificate?
It's a 6 1/2 hour drive for me so I have only been down once. Maybe next year I can get down there more. The group is running Lightning on Sat & Thunderbolt on Sunday.
I am certified through the pca national program which also qualifies me as msf2. NJ state law states no riders when on track unless u r a certified instructor. U just have to make sure scda is ok with it. Even if u cant get on track with u ill probably still come over.
Last (probably) event of the year this past weekend at Summit Point. Great weather to drive, hangout with friends and complete my first year instructing.
This is the first part of 24 laps in the last session of the last day. My friend in his 991.2 GT3 and I had a great time switching back and forth. He hits 152 on the main straight. PBs this session of a 1:23.316 and 1:21.67, I'm sure you can figure out which one was mine.
Sadly this year no
@De Jeeper
You Tube
Sad indeed... i was at njmp on monday and blistered my last set of hossier scrubs so im kinda glad i didnt go to summit as it would have cost me even more tire money.
I was at VIR with ACNA or I would have done this event as well. Would have been nice to run with another quick 996. Hopefully next year I'll meet more of you all face-to-face.
I'd post some video (got into the low 2:08s, but also almost had the biggest wreck) but my go pro decided to meter for the back of my seats and everything out of the window is washed out.
Yes that event took some people away from ours, I get it. If you were from the region and weren't going to VIR it was the place to be. 75 Friday, 65 Saturday 155 - 190 minutes for solo drivers. Many that were at Potomac two weeks ago came back and enjoyed the lower key event. Try us next year.
I know! After the fast lap 5, lap 6 turn five I was 3/4 second up, then he holds me up through the carousel! No problem he's a good friend to slow down for me on the straights.
Sometimes you have to be committed... or nutso... I left my place about 3AM Saturday to head out to NJMP Lightning, 7 hours pulling the 6TT behind the Cayenne. At least there was no traffic. I met up with Aaron
@De Jeeper
whom I somehow tricked into being my instructor for the day.
The weather was great, maybe a bit windy, and dry, oh so dry. Dust kept getting on the track.
First, let me tell you that DE Jeeper knows his $#!t and can transfer his knowledge very well.
Second, he seemed to like how I have my car set up.
Third, it was a fantastic track day even with some short sessions. I have not driven Lightning before and with Aaron's advice I somehow managed to turn some 1:19's with quite a bit left on the table. I hope I can run this track next year with Aaron on board for one more session to put it all together.
Maybe I'll find time to grab some video of the laps.
Great to see two friends having fun at the track. With this validation
@De Jeeper
is just going to talk more and more.
I will admit he has been on those two tracks more than anyone I know. I was in the 1:19s my first time there. Year later took off 3 secs so yes a lot left to figure out. Hope we can all get together down there next year.
Man what a good day.... im glad we got some more speed out of the car and those moton shocks feel great. Im lucky because that track is only an hour away so im there often. I only wish i had time on sunday to right seat on Thunderbolt. Btw, njmp it the only place i have a slightly faster time then
@hbdunn
so his opinions count.
im also happy that i didnt get too motion sick in the passenger seat. I have not instructed much because i have been worried about getting sick. I did start to feal it toward the end so im gonna try the braclets or the behind the ear patch. Im a little worried that Dramamine will effect my reaction times. Hopefully i can get it worked out because geeking out on theory and then applying it was fun
I saved a lap from each tack off my Catalyst. It takes good video.
Lightning, this clip is from the third session. The 4th session the sun was blinding into turn 1 which made finding the track difficult. DE Aaron showed me a much better way into the lightbulb which cut over 1 second off that lap. After driving all night and day I was getting pretty tired though so the third session was the best. I'm going a bit too slow and early into turn 7 after the bridge because I was way to aggressive early and probably dialed it back a bit much.
You Tube
Thunderbolt, this is from the last session of the year, second to last lap. The lap felt really good. When the 992 gives me the pointby going into the octopus I noticed the Catalyst was showing 1.77 seconds faster than my personal best (!). Also I probably could go a lot faster under the bridge but turn 12 can get scary. I am sure if DE Aaron was there I could have shaved another second or two. One thing about this lap, it felt easy like I was not even pushing hard. Every PB at Thompson for instance has felt like a major struggle.
You Tube
That was a pretty good t-bolt lap. The lines looked good u just need a little less braking and coasting in a few places. Your car deff has a sub 1.30 lap in it with some commitment
.
And use the curbs more.
Aaron, Metro PCA is at thunderbolt March 29-30. Happy to get you in the solo group and do some laps with you. It will be one of the first days there with the new option of taking out the octopus. 2 hours plus of track time.
After a long winter, the season started this past weekend at Summit Point with PCA Potomac. Not my best lap and certainly not my worst, but representative of my weekend. I am trying Bridgestone RE-71RS tires for the first time. They felt pretty grippy and could handle the 25 minute run sessions without getting greasy. They aren't hoosiers, but I really liked them this past weekend. I hope to lean on them a little harder the next time I am there and see how they respond.
You Tube

Just finished 5 days at VIR with Audi and Porsche. I struggled all weekend and couldn't pull a decent time out of the car while all my buddies were setting PBs. Sometimes it's just that way. Here's the closest thing to a decent lap but still plenty of mistakes. The UIDS worked very well and oil pressures were great throughout the event! I highly recommend the UAOS and the UIDS to anyone tracking a 996.
You Tube
-KJ
Full caged "race car" nice. Lap looked pretty good but maybe grip was an issue in spots?
What lap times were u seeing? i was bringing the suck down there a few weeks ago with 2.18s.....i dont even want to post the vid
.
I am not close to where I need to be. I have all the excuses ready though. lol
That lap was a high 2:08. Goal was a 2:06.x so I am a long ways away from that.
Car is caged but very little weight reduction. Still has a full interior except no door cards and speakers. Mismatched shocks front to rear, but oh well... I drive what I got.
-KJ
Maryland represent! (my home state).
Vid looks great! I'm in the wee stages of building out a track 996. Not sure I'll get to full cage and interior deletes, but UAOS is in
Jason who started this and many other great threads is no longer with us (banned not dead).
Anyway had a lot of fun with him at the track when his car was running.
@De Jeeper
and I try to keep the tradition of getting 996s on the track together. Here is yesterday in 100 degree heat, for reference water and oil temp max was 212 and 231F.
You Tube
Always fun to see the car from behind
.
Its amazing how much being a few hundred pounds lighter is a dispropotionate advantage over more hp. I could not get lower then a high 1.33 yesterday. I struggled with grip and mentally putting a solid lap in even wirh the cool shirt. Ill try to download my vid this week.
We had messaged back and forth last fall but this is what I wrote.
Here are specifics 2001 3.4 with 50k on it. 15k of that is track miles the past four years over 105 days.
Mods to the engine
UAOS
Hartech deep sump that I helped them test. This allows me to run the oil just over the top mark of the dipstick, about 12 liters. Motul 300v 15w50
GT3 throttle body and IDP plenum
Underdrive pulley
FVD cat less x-pipe
Removed condensers, fans and shrouds associated with the radiators, vented fender liners behind them.
Original radiators but added a used center one.
I use a AIM soloDL and a Garmin. Like the garmin for an easy way to review at the track and compare with friends.
IMO, zbomb should be reinstated. Banned long enough to punish him sufficiently imho.
Zbomb contributed a lot to this forum, always enjoyed reading his posts and threads. Some of his threads are among the best on here imo.
His technical hands on 996 expertise/experience on and off track was a benefit for many others here.
Ya, he did have an opposing opinion to many others here, but isn't that what forum banter is all about...
Maybe time to rethink this and not go over board for 1 maybe drunken outburst...??? Hey, we even let murderers out of jail eventually...
jmho
I guess I missed the zbomb "incident", whatever it was, I only remember constructive posts from him if I recall correctly, but I don't follow the forum that closely. Many years ago I recall wildly rude and inappropriate comments being common on RL, and as far as I could tell, there seemed to be no moderation at all. But for the last many years, I can't really recall any inappropriate threads/posts/comments, so either people have decided to behave better or the moderation is working pretty silently and pretty effectively. If zbomb had a one-time issue, I don't know why it wouldn't have been a temporary ban.
Meh u didnt miss anything....there was no specific thread or incedent that anyone would or could point to. We just figure he questioned 1 or more "vendors" and he was booted. The mod never adressed the issue. Is what it is and i dont think it will ever be figured out.
Zbomb was banned right after he and Slakker has a little dust up...I have no idea if that was the trigger for the Ban or just a coincidence as it it wasn't nearly as bad as some of the past ones, or maybe the really bad stuff got redacted......
IIRR, one night a rather new forum member with very bizarre and very mechanically incorrect recommendations to the forum came back on to again 'inform us the best way to do things'. It was so far fetched that zbomb took him to task on it and they had it out. Ended up with zbomb cursing him out and telling him he was the biggest **** idiot ever on the forums. And it went on and on.
Can't remember what the other forum members name was, or the exact argument that night, but that guy was always claiming some outrageously incorrect mechanical claim. And some new 'green' forum members seemed to be swayed by this guys constant incorrect advice.. so zbomb was trying to right the ship and expose this guy for who he was. Maybe Z had a drink to much that night IDK, but the next morning all that thread/stuff was gone and zbomb was banned...
Thats how I remember it....
Sounds like he took one for the team to me. He's been punished; shown what can happen if certain lines are overstepped. Point taken. Let him back on. The knowledge base is needed here.
Being semi retired, read the forums daily. Even though I don't remember his forum name, his abrasive misinformed style was unmistakable in every one of his posts. Don't get me wrong, he wasn't a bad guy, just very opinionated, quick to judge, and misinformed about most everything 996, and no telling him different. Quite a few of us tried.
IIRR he was only here for a matter of months before the blow up above. Now that you mention it, haven't seen him since that night. Probably got hit with the BAN hammer also. Wish i could remember his name, if I see him, or his same type style/posts, in the future, will be sure to update that here....

When i first joined Rennlist many years ago, there was this one person who was just preaching the gospel of IMS. In a "YOU ARE ALL GOING TO DIE, REPENT AND SELL YOUR 996". It was a running joke, he was so crazed about the bearing and the impending destruction that was to come. What was that guys name?
Wasn't it Boxman or something like that ??
As you know we get a lot of owner turnover in here. Every 5-7 years there is a whole new bunch of owners and the same rhetoric starts all over again with a few "wild cards" in the Deck !!
There r some out there but not sure if there is much with the ls in the car. He had issues with the throttle and by the time they were fixed his job changed and his available time dissapeared.
He had a vid at thompson passing about 22 cars in a 20min session.
I figured if I don't go to the track I will regret it. I have not touched the car and it's been hanging out in the parking lot for the last 8 months. So I signed up Lime Rock for the 3rd.
Time to do some work!
Flush the brakes, very important. I did it twice to make sure there was no trace of the old fluid.
Change the engine oil, it's got 4.5 track hours on it. I am trying a fill of M1 15W-50 this time.
I was going to change the trans oil, since it's got only 12.5 hours on it I let it ride.
I am not sure how much last year's NT01's have left to give, I'm running them anyway. They look like they got very hot at NJMP. I am not expecting to be very fast at Lime Rock, if I am around 1:07-1:06 I'll be happy. It's been 8 months since I have been on track. PB at LRP is 1.02.00.
With some luck it won't rain and will be only ordinary hot.
I thought about seeing if you were going to palmer today but then saw you are doing TNIA.
Last time I did CCW there I think you were also there. Over three second gain since then.
You Tube
Missed the apex horribly in 7
Jeepers Brad that's 5 seconds faster than my PB, you're really smokin it there!
I'm still so busy at work I hardly have any time.
And.... supposed to rain Thursday.
The last session that he ran was October 2023 and I happen to have a short video clip of me following him. The session was a mess for many reasons. This is the best segment I could grab. It is hard to hear his car because the mic on my phone pics up all the sound inside my car, so I stayed out of the power over the hill and he promptly ran away and hid.
" target="_blank">
You were righter than I was, I managed a 1:03.35. You don't want to know what the first couple laps were... The event was shut down after the 2nd session because of lightning so I packed up and left before the really heavy rain started.
And to remove any doubt that I am not a great driver here's what happens when you get impatient after following someone for 1 and 1/2 laps and they give crappy point by in a lousy spot. I swear if I had four more feet of track I could have stayed out of the grass. My datalogger wasn't working either.
1-4 is where everything seems to happen. I seem to remember a previous trip through the grass just before that spot for you! Glad this on wasa save!
I swear this NE weather this year has been crazy.
Thats a pretty good time. I have only been under 1.03 a few times. Also good save in the video. Looks like the turbo came up and have u a little too much power in the turn. U may have been a little early to the gas pedal.
You might have mowed some grass here too as I recall
. I didn't go off backwards this time which I guess is better.
Also to the left of center it's all bad camber and tire marbles. Those can't help either. I should've dropped a few more mph.
LMAO yea the port o let is there at neighbors house as he is also a car guy and is adding a new separate garage to house his 1967 big block Corvette coupe 👍
Rich
First time VIR, made the 10 hour trip down there. I was trying to figure out if I should be faster or slower than WG. In the end I was a second slower but that's 3 days compared 40 at the Glen. Next year will get a coach in the right seat to help me clean things up.
You Tube
Not a good year for me (not as bad as DE Aaron though). Looks like I'll have done a total of 40 minutes on track this year. Working 12 hours / 7 days has downsides.
Upgrades are here sitting in a box... Pauter rods, Tial XR1000 turbos, 1300cc injectors, Syvecs standalone ecu, 996 Cup ABS...
No time to install them
.
Spent the last two days getting 996 ready for Florida race season first up HSR in December, prepping is getting harder each year cant understand that it certainly cant be me getting older 😀

Is anyone planning on going to Lime Rock on Oct 5th with Metro PCA? I know its really far away but I am having my 1st kid in 3 weeks so I wanna keep my schedule open for the next few months. I will be bringing my e46 M3 again.
Its on the radar but its toi far out. Im sure
@hbdunn
will be there.
I will be the 5/29-30 with Empire. Its a vintage race and 7 hpde sessions over 2 days. Lots of cool old cars and racing. Tge hpde is run a little "loose" but its safe
Cool cool, yeah its super far out I just had to get something in the books to look forward to, as soon as I started getting into HPDE my life got super busy so I am forcing myself to go by booking this way in advance. Last time I went to LRP I met up with
@hbdunn
so if anyone also is going lets all meet up for sure.
This past weekend had a good learning sessions at the Porsche Ring Prny (Estonia). Still much to learn, especially with using the full width of the track, but progress is good.
Here's on lap when track was not too wet:

Yesterday was another good practice day at the track. This time at Alastaro Circuit Finland.
Slowly getting used to this 996 while still much 'bravery' is missing on my driving

Day two at Limerock Park completed without incident, not happy with my lap times but had a fun day. Off to Canaan Auto Park in New Hampshire this afternoon for day three and final day at Pocono on Saturday.
Well day three of four days four tracks is complete. Had timed sprint runs at Canaan Auto Park in New Hampshire today which we finished around 1:00pm then made the 6 hour drive to Pocono Raceway for timed runs on the track tomorrow day four.
Last track day is Pocono Raceway this morning which was cut short by rain and lightning. Did get on the track for two sessions though. It was an epic four days traveling too and racing on four different racetracks in four different states in four days. Now for the long drive home. Including track miles tripometer reads just over 1000 miles and the ole 996 didnt skip a beat.
Yesterday was a nice practice day at the Ahvenisto Race Circuit (Finland).
This track has great amount of vertical variation while the barriers are way too close for comfort...
My phone mount seen at the bottom was a bit loose and made some annoying rattling noice - sorry about that.

Today was another great day at the Ahvenisto Race Circuit and today's best was 2s better than my previous PB 3-days ago.
Still way too scary to get close to the barriers next to the pitlane... there would be some time to pick up.

Although I found time to get in 45 laps.
Best lap of the three days. Used my PB from last September for the delta. Up 4/10ths coming out of 7. Usually make up time on the last section, just too anxious and over drove, missed some apexes.

Ran my personal best of 1:47.32 at HPR doing tire testing recently. I beat my previous PB by 0.6 seconds. Interestingly, this was on a set of cycled out tires at the end of their life as they gave up the ghost a few laps later. The giveaway prior to them disintegrating completely was the noise from the cord slapping the right rear wheel well.

That transmission is amazing! I thought you had a PDK in there until I read through the looooong description of "mods". While some prefer to "row their own", i'd love a PDK, but this is also right up there. Great to watch rpm shifts, and zero "money shifts" possible!.
YMMV
Im in the low 1.04s with a stock 40th Anniversary. Granted the 40th has an additional 25 horsepower, sports suspension and a LSD.
And Ive got lots of room for improvement in big bend entry, uphill, right hander and downhill. Pretty much everywhere. Hope to bust a minute someday. Totally doable.

The PDK gearbox is an amazing unit but not really designed for racing although PM has successfully adapted ti to the 991GT2RS and GT4RS Clubsport models. A true sequential is much more robust for racing and that is what Porsche uses on all Cup/GT3R/ RSR variants. The Holinger sequential we use is a heavy duty version of the Holinger 997Cup sequential racing transmission and comes with a very trick fully adjustable LSD that is simply amazing. All the case sections are O-ringed which makes disassembly and reassembly of the gearbox much faster. Since there are no synchros, the parts count is greatly reduced all making for a very robust and easily serviceable unit.
That does bring that time into perspective! I am not a fan of those Contis and I know I couldn't drag that lap time out of them at Watkins. I hadn't been to WGI in over 20 years until earlier this year and I struggled mightily to get up to speed. Watching this video shows me where i need to commit further and open the radius on a few corners. Good stuff
@hbdunn
! I love to see the 996 on the track vids. Keep them coming.

PorscheFest was a couple weeks ago and it was a blast as always. Hopefully some DMV locals who haven't been to the track yet can come check it out next year. Just as I was getting dialed in, something in the transmission decided it had enough. Here's a lap from the first session of the first day:

Today and also a week ago I went to spend a good rainy days at the track.
Both days the rain stopped towards end of the day and track started to dry out just before had to leave - here's todays last lap on drying track.
