If you do change your own battery, I've heard (but haven't tried personally) that if you leave a battery maintainer plugged into the lighter outlet while your changing your battery, that you won't have to re-set the radio and other settings.

How much should a 996 Porsche battery cost including installation, by the dealer? I was quoted $350.

The part is about $180, and they shouldn't charge more than 1/2 hour, so $225 or so ought to cover it. Buy the part and change it yourself. Or buy a better performing battery. (Search the forum for "optima") You have to reteach the window positions and enter your radio code. Someone else chime in if there is more to it than that.

Buy an aftermarket battery. The batteries themselves are much cheaper (and usually stronger), have a better warranty, and most places will install them for free (if you don't want to do it yourself).

You can get a better, lighter battery for about $50 at a Sam's or Costco. But, if you fixed on what Porsche recommends, I guess you're stuck paying more than necessary.
