Leading evidence: 'Replace me' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace every 5000 come what may and live in s.e' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I will drive mine year round on 5-40 Motul full synthetic excess8100 which I change every 5000 come what may and live in S.E.

There's no need to change the oil unless you're not running 0w-40 oil.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey everyone,
This is my first winter with the 1999 996, and it is often parked outside. At startup, the oil pressure jumps up to 5, but generally drops back down after warm up and some driving. I'm wondering if this is normal, or a sign I should go in for an early oil change. Perhaps switch to an oil better in the cold ? Or is this a sign of something more serious. What is the optimum pressure at 3000 RPMs ? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Cheers !
There's no need to change the oil unless you're not running 0w-40 oil. For temps below -25C 0w-40 oil is recommended.
Also, the only oil pressure callout I've seen/come across is something like:
oil pressure at n = 5000 Approx. 6.5 bar at 90C
Note that the car's oil pressure gage may not read this high. My Turbo's oil pressure gage climbs to approx. 4.5 bar at 5K with the engine oil hot.
This is ok.
More often than not gages like the oil pressure (and coolant temp) are not intended to precisely convey in this case oil pressure, just good enough to give one the warm fuzzies.
A real oil pressure gage's needle dances around and swings back and forth like crazy that I believe the concern is making the gage robust enough to handle this and having to alleviate the concern an owner might have over the reading swings.
In short, just like the temp gage the oil pressure gage is dampened.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Thanks guys for the feedback.
@fpb111...not the first with a 0/P gauge, but this is my first Porsche.I am totally impressed with it's power and handling. I find myself caring more about what the gauges are telling me with this car..maybe i am fallng in love (?)
Thats normal. I have the same model, year, and color as yours only a cabriolet. Like you, it's my first 911 and on a cold engine the oil pressure reads tops even when idling. I always warm mine up before driving off. The temps by then is about 100F and when fully warm and hard driving, just over 180F. The oil pressure has dropped to around 3 to 4 in 6th gear 80MPH at 3000revs. . On idle at stop signs when fully warm, its into the minus figures. I like to keep high revs in my gear handling and keep the oil pressure in the 3 range. BTW if you havent changed your oil yet, do it. I will drive mine year round on 5-40 Motul full synthetic excess8100 which I change every 5000 come what may and live in S.E. PA
Your readings are pretty close to what I see on my new (to me) 996. Have you found yourself in the garage at 11 PM with a bottle of wax? That's where I was when I realized I was lost in love.
LOL, I often find myself just staring at it..then deciding that we are need more milk or something like that, just as an excuse to get her out. My wife will joke "if that car is so fast, why does it take you 10 times as long to get back from the store ?". That on ramp to the highway is just too tempting.
Yeah, driving has changed for me. I've had other sports/performance cars in the past but nothing that was this beautiful from every angle and nothing so light on its feet and willing to rev in any gear at any speed.
Yah when the oil is cool before warm up to regular operating temp its unsafe to do full range rpms. Lots of pressure builds up. Let it get to operating temp on the temp gauge and see that the oil pressure isn't riding at the top anymore and it should be safe to do some healthy rpms. When you might see a video of a race car being started up and take off into full race laps you can figure it was an already warmed up car before it was started.
Isn't wizzing up the on ramp a wonderful feeling and joining traffic at speed without having to slow up and overtaking those travelling over the permitted speed limit from on ramp to fast lane lol. I love that 3rd gear. Who the hell needs a turbo when a 3rd gear hits over the ton mark? WHOOPS
