Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I repeat, bought and installed the LN IMS retrofit.

like macster metioned...I do know that under warranty some dealers blamed IMS and replaced the engine but were these truly IMS failures?

Hey at least I sleep better now, anyone want to buy a perfectly good used IMS bearing from a 99 C2 996?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

When you say "not legitimate", do you mean that the failure could be something else, or it may not be a failure at all?
Or do you think someone who is fear mongering would park there car on the street, dump oil all over the road, and say "look what happened to my car"?
I thought the same thing myself and read and read and read. And then I bought the LN retrofit.
I repeat, bought and installed the LN IMS retrofit.

swing by the shop if you are local and I will show you some IMS realities...and introduce you to some owners who wish they never heard of an IMS bearing - or maybe wish they knew there was a fix for a "problem that doesn't exsist"
My indy has fixed quite a few, put quite a few in cars that "didnt need it" and had to break the news "it's time for a new motor" to enough people that FOR ME made it worth taking the steps to prevent if possible
at home this is a pretty cheap fix and facing a $15-20k bill on a car worth $15-20k didnt make sense
Perhaps wishful thinking on your part, this is a real problem for sure. I recently replaced my leaking IMS bearing.
Plus, rest assured, here on Rennlist we would see any "common denominator" in people posting issues.
Yes, I think the advertising campagn for the bearings may play a little on owners fear but I sure think it's a justifiable fear.
Good point. The internet and forums are so full of kids. These are issues that are real. I have a friend who had it and a new engine did cost installed in the neighborhood of 15k. But, it does not happen to anybody. But there are issues with a lot of other brand/cars no?
No question that other cars have issues...all cars have issues...some less than others, some cheaper to fix, some cause them to drive at full speed into walls.....real or not people have been killed by car issues...at least an IMS has never been blamed for someone's life as far as I know
It is possible. A car engine suddenly exhibits serious signs of distress. The engine may stop running, even gush oil or coolant over the street (a new poster just posted a pic of his 996 doing this).
The car is taken to a dealer or a shop and the first thing the owner wants to know is what happened.
'IMS' is often what he is told because it is the easiest thing to say, what first comes to mind.
But unless the engine is torn down we can't know for sure.
And often the engine is not torn down. The bad engine is removed, and a new one installed in its place. The bad engine is returned to the factory.
But IMS gets the blame.
Regardless though a failed engine is a very unpleasant experience. I don't think anyone that has gone through it would have felt any better had the cause been due to a crankshaft failure, a broken rod, or the engine split in two, etc.
Sincerely,
Macster.
I don't think the OP is questioning engine failures. I do believe all the engine failures posted are true..not made up engine failures....but...say it's reported that 90% of these failures are IMS failures...is it true that 90% of these are actually IMS failures or is the actual failure due to IMS less than 90%...and if so...what is the actual number...
like macster metioned...I do know that under warranty some dealers blamed IMS and replaced the engine but were these truly IMS failures?
lets not try and put numbers to this again.....its been tried 1000 times here and ends up in people fighting....
there are no numbers and no statistics to save your car...it either will fail at some point or not...you can eigher replace it before hand in an attempt to save it or not - all the statistics in the world wont change either of those and YOUR bearing is already somewhere along its lifespan - choose and be happy....
if the failure rate was 97% someone would still say... it wont happen because I am a 3% er...always have been... and they might be right
