Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

If you replace the amp, then you end up with a new head unit because of the MOST.
Leading evidence: 'Replace amp' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace amp' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. also, do you know if your current system uses fiber optic's as the speaker wire, because if so you will need to upgrade everything, not just the speakers.

when did porsche use fiber optics for speaker wire?

To do it "right" you would either need to replace the head unit, amplifier and speakers, or you might be able to use a MOST compatible pre-amp like this unit:

However, I did look at just replacing the speakers and it is definitely more complex than you think just to relace the speakers and get the sound right using the stock amp.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm not sure about the 996, but in the 997 the conventional wisdom is that because the Bose system is designed as a system, with crossovers built specifically for the speakers in the car, upgrading the drivers will have little impact on the sound quality. I've not tested this, it's just what I was told. When I talked to installers in town about upgrading in my 997, I was told "don't bother, you'll spend a lot of money for nothing".
also, do you know if your current system uses fiber optic's as the speaker wire, because if so you will need to upgrade everything, not just the speakers.
I'm fairly certain that they do not use fiber to the speakers. The fiber optic ring runs through the head unit and the central bose amplifier. As I understand it, the output from that amplifier has gone through "equalization", and it goes to the speakers via conventional wire.
Correct. Otherwise you would have to have amps in the speakers.

I decided there are more useful upgrades for the money. Especially with a cab. I did end up fiddling with the sond controls and finally getting some good (not great) sound out of the stock Bose system.
Good luck.

And then put in a conventional amp downstream of the pre-amp. I've not heard comments from anyone who has done this.
Well the car is an '05 C4S with aftermarket head unit Pioneer AVIC GPS, 2 Alpine amps but with the OEM Hi sound speakers. I'm trying to get more detailed and less muddled sound as IMO the Bose setup lacks definition. I heard the Morels and was very impressed with the clarity and details, definitely better.
In that case, disregard all we've told you. Buy the Morels, put them in, and let us know how it works out. All the MOST/fiber optic stuff is irrelevant.
