Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is this a normal sounding engine? I'm concerned about the "tinkling" noise that sounds like ball bearings bouncing around. Maybe just header crackle? Can only hear it from the wheel wells, not standing in front of the open engine compartment . Hopefully I'm just being paranoid and it's nothing ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYgJ92s4r74

POST 2Original post

Maybe. Maybe not. Have an expert give a listen. As I've mentioned before I've watched Porsche techs listen to a suspected sick car before. They get the car in the air and get underneath and listen at various points under the car on either side and behind without and with a stethescope. The noise might be header crackle (sounds a bit 'bright' or 'tinkly' for that though). May be something else. While the car's in the air remove the filter housing and carefully dump the oil in a clean drain pan and then look at the filter. What you find or don't find determines what you probably do next. Why guess, though is my point. Have the noise listened to. Better safe than sorry. Heck we're all a bit engine noise shy what with all the engine failures. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Macster. I'll take it to my guy for a listen. I'm afraid my "ear" is all screwed up because I also drive a m/c with a dry clutch which sounds like a bag of loose bolts all the time. This forum is wonderful ... but tends to make one a little noise shy for sure. Billy

POST 4Original post

Billy, As a quick double check, have you tried pushing the clutch in to see if it's a noisy throwout bearing causing the noise?

POST 5Original post

I'm not a mechanic, but my owner's ears say that sounds normal, or at least sounds like my Porsche.

+1..... may have a bit of valve tick... but once rev'd, goes away. Lots of engines have this.... but if you are stressin, have a pro lend an ear to it.
