Reported cause
It is due to the camshaft position sensor (or possibly a solenoid/actuator) being bad.
Leading evidence: 'camshaft position sensor (or possibly a solenoid/actuator) being bad' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'camshaft position sensor (or possibly a solenoid/actuator) being bad' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check dip stick and lower your oil' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You can clear the CEL by disconnecting the battery.

Or will it affect any other internally lubricated components from going bad?

during a recent oil change(this past weekend), I filled it 9qts of Castrol Syntec 5w40.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

during a recent oil change(this past weekend), I filled it 9qts of Castrol Syntec 5w40. Will having the additional .3 qts. make the engine feel less smooth? Or will it affect any other internally lubricated components from going bad? 3 days and about 60 miles later, I experienced a loss of power and check engine light come on under spirited aceleration . Please advise
Let the engine go cold. Check the dip stick and lower your oil to suggested level. Between the low and high mark. No more. Too much I believe can cause damage to the crank case as the crank shaft whips the oil up into froth causing over pressure in the case. You might be able to lower the level enough via the filter canister rather than the drain plug. Less spillage.
You can clear the CEL by disconnecting the battery. leave it off for a while then connect up again and pump in your radio code. Make sure you know the code before disconnecting. If it comes back on again after a few days then you may have a slight problem especially if the CEL is flashing. Don't drive it if it's flashing. If it stays off, then less of the spirited driving. You dont have to hit red line every time you go out for a spin LOL.
Jeff Post year and model of your car miles etc.
Go get a code reader($50-$100) or have someone read the code.
Pep Boys was doing it for free a while back.
Post the code here so we can try to help you.
Advanced Auto does it for free. They won't clear the CEL but will tell you how to do it while the OBDII scanner is attached. I'd spend the money for a scanner.
@ Robrichtex, the dipstick reads a lil over full( I think I'm gonna drain a lil oil today, thanks to all your suggestions).
@ Hurdigurdiman, spirited driving is why I decided to buy a Pcar
but I've yet to hit 7k rpm's in this car.
So the CEL code show's its a "cam position sensor 2", we tried reseting the code but it stays on. does anyone think this might be due to too much oil?
BTW, @C4CRNA, its an 02 C2 Cab w/ 137k and was driving fantastic til this past week

Loss of power? 137K When was the last time the plugs were changed? Just maybe a coincidence a plug went down shortly after you changed oil. You did read my last message on how to get rid of the CEL symbol didn't you? It just may stay off if you have solved why it came on.
good suggestion on the spark plugs! I actually bought some last week and was going to change them during the oil change but ran short of time. I bought NGK iridium plugs. Are these the one's you would recommend? BTW, CEL is still on, drained about half a qt of oil yesterday and tried to reset CEL but comes back on. Thinking I have to replace the camshaft pos sensor
Error is not due to the engine being a bit overfilled with oil. It is due to the camshaft position sensor (or possibly a solenoid/actuator) being bad.
Sincerely,
Macster.
A friend's 350Z threw the same code at a track event a few days ago, apparently due to the camshaft position sensor overheating. Was fine after he let it sit for a while (and ran fine even while throwing the code, though the ECU kept failsafe-stopping the engine immediately after start). Do Porsches suffer similar symptoms when the engine gets really hot?
