Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I saw another 996 C4S Cab on my way into work today and, while the other driver waved as he passed by, it got me thinking it's rare that I get an uninitiated wave from another owner. Has the art of the wave / headlight flash been lost? I know our cars are far from a rare sight on most roads but isn't there still some shared camaraderie among owners...or is it just that my car has "funny headlights" and an engine that is "inappropriately cooled?" Mostly, I get blank stares when I give other drivers a subtle wave or headlight flash. In fact, I've often found that flashing the headlights triggers the other driver to hit their brakes as if I’m warning them of a police presence ahead. I don't discriminate between models (okay, maybe a little against Cayennes and Panameras) but I generally give a subtle wave when I see other Porsches and I'll always wave back. So, I'm curious. Do you typically wave, flash your headlights or otherwise acknowledge other Porsche drivers while you're in your Porsche? -Eric

POST 2Original post

Mostly other 911s but really most of the drivers around here seem to have different motivations for owning one and couldn't care less.

POST 3Original post

Last week I gave envious tumb up to GT3 driver ..

POST 4Original post

In Miami, people have zero interest in waiving at pcars. There are so many exotics driving by that a pcar is no big deal... I'll still give thumbs up now then if I see a properly sorted car...

POST 5Original post

I rarely see one - my step dad and the Vette community do it - well, the older vettes. Most ppl when even find out I have one think I spent a fortune and that german cars are pos after the warrenty is over

No, that would be BMW's. (No offence and BMW owners.) So true though, most people think 996's are so expensive. I did exchange thumbs up with a 993 the other day and always notice other P-cars on the road. Most, however most people do not notice me. I think is is me (the driver) they are scared of anyways!!

POST 8Original post

Lol, yeah, that. I usually flash headlights or wave. I got a nice flash of headlights from a mid-80s SC while driving my 944 once, that was good. Mostly I get blank stares, although I did get a thumbs up from a Fisker driver, once. In fact, I was driving next to a beautiful walnut brown Panamera 4S in my C4S, side-by-side, and the driver couldn't have cared less. Oh well. It's not about the cars, it's about...oh wait....

POST 9Original post

I did accidentally waive to a Boxster the other day! . Seriously, usually get a waive from other Guard's Red 911's. I hope that waiving based on color only isn't race-ist!

POST 10Original post

I can't believe you are all misspelling the word WAVE just to make the OP feel better!?! That's friendship right there!

POST 12Original post

I don't do a full waive just usually a finger raise from hand on wheel.

POST 13Original post

Yes, only to other 911 as Cayennes are mostly driven by mums.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh, hell, I can't believe I did that. lol. I'm not sure where my head was when I wrote that and I'm someone who would have been all over "me" for the typo! lol My bad! -Eric

POST 15Original post

Typos happen all the time. I was just amazed that two others followed suit.

POST 16Original post

i usually give a peace sign/raise hand/wave/honk/high beam/of the sort when I see another 911 only.. that's just cause i dont like the way boxters look haha

POST 18Original post

I usually wave but rarely get one in return. In the old days it was a flash of the headlights among Porsche owners - of course there were only 912's and 911's back then. The vette's did the wave. I remember when I first bought my vette I commented to some buddies that the guy who owned it before me must have had a lot of friends because every vette driver was waving at me.

POST 19Original post

i almost always wave at other porsches....don't get many returns lately though....

POST 20Original post

Greetings! I am a newbie to this particular forum. I am however, a Porsche(s) owner and enthusiast. Being that I am a female driver; I tend to be more subtle when it comes to acknowledging other P-Car owners. I either just smile or nod upon seeing their recognition. -Hedi

POST 21Original post

rarely, but if the driver is smiling and seems to be enjoying the drive (like a attractive women in a cab, on a sunday) ill wave and get a smile and a wave back 100% of the time....vs the guy in the suit who is stuck in traffic on the way to work (I often just get the one finger salute in return)

@Peter ~ fav fav quote from the manual ~~ and it's in there a few times ~;} Hubby says that is aka "Please Save Me" {i won't even try to justify that bc I AM a crappy driver so I'm not going to find out} If I see one I would sure wave and smile tho!

POST 23Original post

Definitely waving to the 911's and they often wave back, I would also wave to the 928's as I am still wanting to see a good one, only seen one about this time last year with a beautiful cobalt blue color and a beasty exhaust, and have not seen another one on the road since!!

POST 24Original post

i waive. interesting responses based on particular style. 911 - typically waive back. cayenne - i am invisible. cayman/boxter - typically waive back.

POST 25Original post

When I'm at the ranch I wave to other pickup drivers on the county road and they wave back. Just the way it is. Harley riders do that down low wave thing when they pas other Harley's, which alwys makes me think they are about to turn left. Occasionally another 911 driver wil wave at me and I'll wave back out of courtesy, but I don't initiate the wave.

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My daughter was kind of disappointed that so few people asked questions about our Porsche at the most recent Caffeine and Carburetors we attended. At one point she said,"Daddy, next time lets bring the [Saab]." lol -Eric

POST 27Original post

I always wave, and I get a wave back about half of the time. I wave when I'm driving the Cayenne too.

Wait, you are in Los Angeles? Thought your profile says Toronto. LOL

POST 29Original post

I will give the "ya bro we are cool" nod... Just kidding, I will often give a little wave or nod to a fellow p-car (not p-SUV) driver. I will sometimes get an acknowledgement. I got into it really with my STI and Integra type R where ownership required a honk or wave to fellow between sti or red top owners.

POST 30Original post

A lot of the Porsche owners around here don't wave / initiate a wave . I found it more common among Corvettes or motorcyclists.

POST 31Original post

I try and wave or give a polite flash. Use to be a regular SOP in years back. But then, I go back to the old days when VWs flashed one another. Football window days when we had rollers for gas pedals and no gas gauges.

POST 32Original post

I'm too focused on the Guardian light display, while my wave hand hovers over the ignition key ready for immediate action.

POST 33Original post

I do a quick wave to every Posche i see (except cayennes & panamera's), but most of the time i dont get a wave or flash back And if so.. mostly those driving older P cars give a sign back.

POST 35Original post

I admit it... I blew it. I usually wave, flash, or at least smile at something from Stuttgart. But next to me yesterday I noticed someone looking (I think) at my freshly washed and waxed MY02 Polished wheels. And I just grin. Thinking he is admiring my cleaning prowess. All the while I am carefully poised to make the left turn without rolling back into the truck behind me in the uphill left turn lane. ONLY WHEN HE LEAVES at the green do I realize he's in another 996. D'oh. Shoulda rolled down the window and exchanged pleasantries. Maybe next time.

POST 36Original post

I think NY attached a no waving clause to the no big gulp drinks law.

POST 37 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

To the best of my knowledge, the "Big Gulp" ban is only in NYC. Rest assured, you can still buy the 1,000 calorie volume containers outside of the 5 Boroughs...not that they'll really fit in a 911's cupholders. -Eric

POST 38Original post

They are too common around here and most of the newer cars are driven by snobs and if you look at them and wave they think you crazy or think you want to race them. But I'll wave at an older 911 or if out in the country on a drive.

POST 39Original post

In the '80s when I had a couple of 914s and a 911 SC everyone would flash another P car driver. It happened without fail, all the time. There were few P cars on the road, and it was a rarity to see one but unmistakable as the shape was unique. So now, having a couple of P cars in the garage since '01, I've noticed this P-driver tradition is forgotten or just purposely not used any more. I still flash out of habit and have been flashed back a couple of times out of hundreds initiated. Early on I'd wave at Cayenne owners, only generally to get a sneer in return, like "I don't know you!". I can pull up at an intersection next to one and I might as well be in a Kia. I'm sure many Cayenne owners don't know a 911 Turbo from Nissan and don't care either. Motorcyclists have a couple of traditions as well. Having had a cycle license since '66, these are quite recent. One is the Gremlin Bell, which I never have seen a need to fit, another more recent is the 2 finger down wave. The wave seems really big with newer riders of big customs, and cruisers and those wearing the costume. Less popular with sport bikes and scooters.
