I could invest into rebuilding the usual engine part but I hate to replace things that are working perfectly fine, especially at 41k miles only.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was looking at extending, my extended warranty as it is running our at the end of the month and pricing is becoming ridiculous now that my car has reached 40k miles. They want $5,300 for a two year coverage and $3,700 for one year. When I bought my car two years ago with 27k miles on it, I paid $2,500 for the same coverage, and I thought it was expensive. As some of you may know, I am in the process of putting the car for sale but I actually like the drive so much I was thinking keeping it, but this warranty situation is pushing me toward selling. The car has been really reliable but I can't sleep at night if I am not covered I could invest into rebuilding the usual engine part but I hate to replace things that are working perfectly fine, especially at 41k miles only.

POST 2Original post

Just go naked and don't worry about it! I haven't had a warranty for years and I don't lose sleep...

POST 3Original post

Philooo, I've told this story before, but it bears repeating. My wife woke me at2 am the morning after I bought my 03 targa. She made go back and buy the extended warranty and at that time I didn't know the engine had the usual part. I understand your predicament. That said if all you're concerned about is the usual part then that money can go along way. Have the work done and bank the other 4 grand for future work. Matt

Well said.... and I have an extended warranty for the next 2 years but will not be extending it any further. I will put away $100 a month, keep checking the oil filter for the dreaded part breakdown Then I will have cash on hand to pay for anything that is not covered and might come up when the warranty runs out that I dont class as DIY work for me. The clutch will need doing and I can have the dreaded part done then. I never loose sleep but have been known to check the garage at 3am in the morning just to verify that I do actually own a 911 LOL.

Take this for what it is: uninformed advice from someone who has no connection to your car and no risk of paying for any repairs. These cars are very reliable. You're living in a forum where horror stories abound - it's like if there was a forum for surfers who survived shark attacks, you'd think you couldn't go on the water without hearing the Jaws music. If knowing that these cars in general are very reliable (see Consumer Reports, et al) and your personal experience with this car is not enough for you to sleep easy, perhaps selling it is a good idea. A car like this is meant to be enjoyed, not fretted over. As to the dreaded part - it's 99% hogwash, and I've seen nothing to convince me the "fixes" really work meaningfully better than the original. If LN is now reporting 5 failures in the 3-4 years they've been selling these on what constitutes a very small overall percentage of the M96/M97s out there, I doubt there's much difference on what's a very low risk of failure anyway. Even if it works, is it worth a few thousand dollars to go from 99.5% to 99.9% risk that you won't have an issue? Again, just my two cents. These boards are awful for causing stress. These cars are great for relieving it. But only if you let them. Good luck, whatever you do!

POST 6Original post

If you are this concerned with potential repair costs, Porsche ownership may just not be for you... The vast majority of expenses related to any Porsche are not covered by warranty... regular services, tires, etc. Repairs can at times be pricey, but with the 996 are relatively few and far between. And just doing the math, short of a major engine catastrophe you will lose money on an extended warranty. I had the LN bearing installed when an RMS leak required repair, mostly for my own piece of mind. Anything else I'll deal with as it comes. Granted, enlightened spousal support is a pre-requirement for that sort of approach.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am fine with all the expenses, the one I don't want to pay for is the $20k engine replacement for whatever cause it might be, rod bearing, ims, or whatelse it can be.

POST 9Original post

I purchased my 2001 C4 last month. One of the reasons I bought this car "besides it's darn good looks" was only 52k miles and a included three month 3 thousand mile drive train warranty. I felt much more confident spending money with even a small warranty. A few days later the Credit Union offered me a three year extended warranty and no money up front on my loan. Instead $1200 tacked on the tail end of the loan. It really sounded too good to be true. More peace of mind. I could sleep at night. The CU mailed me the brochure and the contract. I read the brochure and it sounded even better. Then I read the contract . In the fine print. The max the warranty would ever pay out over the life of the warranty was $3000.00 !!! So two $1500.00 repairs and they would be through with me. I decided to pass on this warranty. Heck I would have been paying $1200.00 of the $3000.00 myself.

POST 10Original post

I've purchased two extended warranties in my life. The first was in 1990 on a new Ford Bronco purchase. I never used it. Not once. The second was when I bought the Cayenne. I bought an extended warranty from the Porsche dealer that extended my factory warranty to 8 years or 80,000 miles. I never used it. Not once. For me personally, I believe that extended warranties are more often than not a waste of money.

POST 11Original post

Well ... obviously! These places stay in business for a reason. It's like going to Vegas. Sometimes you win, most times you lose. There are two reasonably good reasons to buy an extended warranty: one, if you buy a good one, it allows you to put a cap on your exposure. Two, and this is psychological only, it allows you to enjoy the car without worrying about something going wrong. But of course the odds are the warranty company does better than you. They've figured out what the cost of owning your car is likely to be, added on their costs for overhead, etc., the sales commission for whoever sold it to you, and what I think we can safely assume is a tidy profit margin. Just amazing they can do all this for less than $25K, since we all know the _ _ S faiils 100% of the time in these cars

I'll bet you $3,500 that my engine is going to explode in the next three years! Something like that?

Lol this is the funniest way of putting it, but I have to admit that is actually the kind of bet I would love to make, but not for more than $3,500

Has anyone ever had a positive, money saving, experience with an aftermarket warranty?

Whats up with referring to "the part"? Its not Jehovah (he whose name cannot be said). IMSB, IMSB, IMSB. There, I said it, and no thunderbolt came down from heaven and struck my motor dead.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

can anybody share some extended warranty companies they had luck with ? Fidelity, form the porsche dealer is just too much, I want to look for quotes from other provider.

POST 18Original post

I am amazed and very very happy at the moment. I am typically one of those "NEVER buy an extended warranty on anything". But this afternoon I was overjoyed that the PO of my 04 C4S convinced me to buy out the warranty and pay the transfer fee. Picked up the car today with a replacement audio head unit and a factory new amplifier at a cost near $1,900.00 - I paid $100.00 The stereo sounds better than ever - or maybe it was that not needing to cut a check that was sweet music in my ears. The company is Warranty Solutions. The obvious trick here is that the PO upgraded to the top tier coverage and picked up quite a bit of coverage that most contracts would exclude. The previous owner had both window regulators covered as well as the RMS and IMS seal. In addition to the audio, I had the oil sending unit, front trunk struts, and a rear differential seal covered. I guess this is the reason the adjuster told the service writer that this was one policy that gave back more than it's money worth. The contract cost $2,400.00 for 2 yrs, 24000 miles. Originally purchased in 10/2010 with 22k miles on the clock. I will consider renewing, depending on the cost. I expect to have close to 38k miles on the clock at renewal time. I wonder if they will consider their loss on this policy and try to recoup it on a renewal premium. Interesting part is that when I had the PPI done in 10/11 it came back clean and Porsche warranty records showed only one warranty repair, and that was for the battery. Glad I drive my cars and that these issues arose while covered by this warranty. Feeling lucky today - but the lottery was already closed by the time I was heading home.

google "TOTAL SHIELD". A lot of dealers sell this in LA. Its talked about on the 6speed website where there is more info, mostly possitive. I have it, & probably will purchase it again. Hope i never use it. And i never say "shank" on the golf course....(referring to "the part")

This post is awesome! I am printing it out and placing it on my garage Maintenance board! Well said sir!

POST 21Original post

I like the idea of an extended warranty as I don't want to drop 15k or 20k for a new engine. Yes I can afford it but I buy insurance for other things so am thinking about it here. However, the prices seem high which have me leaning toward keeping the money in the bank. Here are the quotes for my 2004 C4S cab with 37k miles, for a Fidelity "platinum" exclusionary policy: 6 years /72,000 miles $11002 6 years/60,000 miles $8192 4 years/ 48,000 miles $5589 3 years/36,000 miles $4411 ALL WITH $100 deductible per visit Or 6 years /72,000 miles $8386 6 years/60,000 miles $6335 4 years/ 48,000 miles $4435 3 years/36,000 miles $3575 ALL WITH $250 deductible per visit

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

SacTownGuy, where did you get those number ? which dealership ? I mean those are good prices for the year of your car. If I could get those prices for my car, I'd go for it. The value can also be seen in resale as the waranty can be transfered. I got quote $5k for 2 years warranty , on my 2003 Carrera with 40k miles
