The dealer told me that they always campaign for a factory reman rather than attempting to repair a transmission in house.
Replace gears and synchros, they cannot fix the darn thing

After dropping the tranny twice, replacing gears and synchros, they cannot fix the darn thing.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So it's been a month to the day that my "new to me" 996 went back into the shop for transmission issues (humming noise and first gear popping out). The car is still in the shop. After dropping the tranny twice, replacing gears and synchros, they cannot fix the darn thing. So now they have sourced a used transmission with 66k on it and are going to go with that instead.
So here is the recap:
-7 weeks ago I purchased (and it went into the shop with issues about 2 days later)
-got car back after 2 1/2 weeks supposedly fixed, but wasn't on either issue.
-took car right back to be fixed again
-now been 4 more weeks and they have decided that they just can't figure it out and a used tranny will be put in.
I'm really just venting because it sucks that I still don't have my car nearly 2 months after I bought it. But luckily I haven't had to pay for any of it, the place I bought it from has stepped up and is paying the bill.
Now the only thing I'm worried about is getting a used tranny with 66k. It does have a 6 month warranty though, and has less miles than the car, so hopefully it'll be okay.
Thanks for letting me rant. I'll have to do a reintroduction when I finally get this thing back (supposedly next Wednesday).
Chris
I hope everything works out for you. That's a terrible introduction to your new 996. You might want to ask others in your area to recommend a good indy for future work. Good luck!
It's a tough way to fall in love with your Porsche, but at least somebody else is paying the bill. Must be very frustrating nonetheless for you to be separated from your new to you Porsche. Hope it all works out in the end.
The humming noise is usually the trans bearings which are a sealed design and can go dry. Replacement requires disassembly of the trans. Do a search on here, its happened to a few of us..
may have missed your intro but was a PPI done? best of luck getting yuor car's woes sorted out, hopefully very soon since summer is here for us Cali folks
Interesting that they tried to "repair" it. I had mine replaced by the dealer - bad 4th gear synchronizer. When they told me they had ordered a factory reman and it was coming in from Germany I was shocked. The dealer told me that they always campaign for a factory reman rather than attempting to repair a transmission in house. Luckily for me the car was under CPO at the time.
Hope it all works out for you and you get a chance to really enjoy your car.
