so the CEL is due to a "camshaft position sensor 2" which put the car into "limp mode".
Leading evidence: '"camshaft position sensor 2"' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is '"camshaft position sensor 2"' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check maf connection' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I changed the air intake to a K&N a couple of weeks ago and the car ran GREAT(especially during heavy acceleration)!

(MY 02 Boxster had its passenger side VarioCam solenoid/actuator replaced some months ago and the cost came to around $3K.

I encouraged him to stick his foot into it, he did, the engine ran right up to 7000 rpm and shut him down.

The repair cost may not be too great if the problem is just sensor.

Suggestion
If you have over filled your engine during your oil change, this might cause the cam shaft to whip up the oil into a froth maybe causing the loss of power and subsequent CEL on.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone. Looking for some expertise or someone thats had a similar problem with your Pcar. I was accelerating onto a freeway onramp the other night as I noticed in 2nd gear aroung 5500-6000rpm's I had a sudden power lose. Felt as if I was decelerating even if I had my foot on the gas. Check engine light came on and freaked me out. I drove home the rest of the way real gently. What can this be? Any suggestions?
not to sound ignorant but what is the CEL code? Just a brief background on the car. I changed the air intake to a K&N a couple of weeks ago and the car ran GREAT(especially during heavy acceleration)! This past weekend, did an oil change(Castrol syntec 5w40). To me, it seemed to run a little differently after the oil change(as far as the engine feeling as smooth as before).
+1
Is the check engine light still on?
What's the chances you hit the rev limiter? I've done that a few times when it caught me off gaurd.
Notably, I let a buddy drive my car once. I encouraged him to stick his foot into it, he did, the engine ran right up to 7000 rpm and shut him down. He freaked out, I didn't.
It's the check engine light that is casue for concern. As the man said, scan the code and post it up.
CEL=Check Engine Light
Use a Durametric to read the code or have your Dealer or Indy do it. BTW if your CEL light starts flashing do not drive the car. Good luck!
Or at least use a generic OBDII scanner to read the code(s). If you have an Android phone, I highly recommend the Torque app ($5) + organge/blue OBDII bluetooth scanners ($20). Can't beat the price and convenience! Oh btw, you should at least check the MAF connection on the new air intake.
I don't think it was the rev limiter because I've done that in the past. The power delivery felt like I was accelerating in too high a gear(wrong gear). Yes, CEL is still on and the first thing I checked was the MAF connections when I got home and the rest of the intake to make sure nothing came loose. Thanks for all your support
To get rid of the CEL, disconnect the battery leads for a few minutes. Then reconnect them. The computer will reset things and the CEL should stay off. It just may have come on momentarily as you over taxed the revs. If it comes back on again in a few days, then look into it. If it starts to flash. As Gonzo suggests, Don't drive. Those CELs are a PITA.
so the CEL is due to a "camshaft position sensor 2" which put the car into "limp mode". Does anyone know if this is costly to repair or even better is it a DIY fix?
If you have over filled your engine during your oil change, this might cause the cam shaft to whip up the oil into a froth maybe causing the loss of power and subsequent CEL on. Check your oil on the dip stick.
+1 on the maf sensor. A cold air intake soaked in oil can thow all kinds of codes. Under hard acceleration the engine is pulling in a on of air and often times oil from cai as well. That oil will gob up your maf/map sensors. If that's the case you usually can clean the sensor and be good to go
The repair cost may not be too great if the problem is just sensor. There are I'm sure -- based on the info I have for other models -- tests/checks a tech with the PIWIS2 diagnostics computer (and maybe a volt/ohm meter) can do that can pinpoint the cause of the behavior, if it is a sensor or perhaps something deeper, like a VarioCam solenoid/actuator.
If it is the latter two items the repair can run into several thousand dollars. (MY 02 Boxster had its passenger side VarioCam solenoid/actuator replaced some months ago and the cost came to around $3K. The 996 IIRC has an easier to get out solenoid which may (May?) help keep the cost down.)
This problem won't get better on its own so you want to get it professionally diagnosed and fixed.
Sincerely,
Macster.
