I originally thought I would continue to use the C2 as my daily driver and the C4S more for a pleasure drive.

So if you buy a Porsche you will probably have to buy a secound car (for winter) because, be honest, as a Porsche owner for more then 22 years i can't immagine to use a Porsche during winter time with all the salt and rocks in the street....so if you are ready to get a second car go with a Porsche otherwise stick to a BMW.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys,
My first post
I have spent the last week reading hundreds of threads about the 996. But i need some advice/opinions please.
I am in the market for a car and ive pretty much narrowed my choices to an 08' m3 or a 996. Most of my friends and family tell me the m3 is the better choice because its newer, cheaper to mainain and though i kind of agree i just can't stop thinking about the 911! I want one sooo bad lol.
There is a dealership close to my house that has 2 996's for sale. The first one is an 04' 40th and the second one is an 03' C4s. I always wanted a C4S but i cant stop staring at the 40th!
What do you guys think? I spoke with one of the salesman over the phone and he told me to drop by anytime and take them both for a spin.
I added the link to the website for both cars. Price seems fair?
All opinions and advice is appreciated. Thanks

welcome rambo99. Both cars are very desirable; it may just come down to overall condition upon closer inspection; maintenance history, if available. A thorough PPI /DME by an independent mechanic should give you some piece of mind whichever car you choose.
ARe the sales, "AS-IS" or do you get some form of buyer protection in Canada? Can you purchase an extended warranty for either car?
both cars are 3.6, non-GT1 blocks. AWD C4S, which if it's going to be a winter/DD may suit you better in Canada.
widebody is a plus, but I prefer the exterior and interior colors on the 40th. You can always consider a vinyl wrap for the black C4S in case the black is not to your liking.
At first glance I would choose the 40th anniversary edition. I have an 04 C2 and an O4 C4S and I have to say that they are quite different cars. I didn't expect the difference, I thought the C4S was more for looks with the wide body and expected the AWD to be a better winter car - I have always driven my C2 in the winter with no problems. We didn't get snow this winter so I didn't have a chance to check out the C4S in this regard.
The C2 is faster, handles differently, more fun launching out of a corner, more raw. I always say that it is fast and fun. I expect you would notice even more of a power difference with the 40th because of the X51 power kit.
That said - The C4S feels more refined, a more comfortable long haul driver. It still has plenty of power, it is no dog for sure. I always say that it is pleasant and precise.
I originally thought I would continue to use the C2 as my daily driver and the C4S more for a pleasure drive. But I do find myself driving the C4S more as the daily driver and the C2 more for a sh*t and git blast of a ride.
Other difference is trunk space, the 40th give you more space even with the inflated donut spare - the trunk is much deeper. I can grocery shop with the C2 no problem - the C4S I am lucky to fit two laptop cases in the trunk. And the spare is a space saver and you need to inflate it with the provided air pump.
I really like the way the 40th that you are looking at is appointed. The C4S not so much, not a big fan of anything aftermarket in these cars - so maybe the nav system is turning me off a bit.
This is just my opinion - drive them both - perform your due diligence in terms of PPI - and if it all checks out I think you will find that these are very reliable cars. Cheaper to fix is a relative term, depends on how often you need to have a car fixed.
Best of luck - hope to hear that you are enjoying a 996 in the near future.
Thanks guys!
I agree with both of you. The 40th interior and exterior is beautiful. I love the widebody though on the C4S.
I am going to see the cars in person on Monday and hopefully that will make my decision much easier.
2k3- I am not sure if they offer extended warranty but i will definately ask about that. Its such a difficult decision to make but hopefully i choose right. Does the price seem fair or are the prices in Canada totally different than America?
Thanks again! It really does mean alot coming from actual 996 owners who know what they are talking about!
They look like two excellent cars.
The 40th looks great in colors, and very stock except for the K&N induction kit. Not sure this adds power (I have it just in case it does). Its a great car.
I will admit now that I would buy the C4S, each to their own, but I have owned/driven most and prefer the 4wd, wide body, big brakes, etc. Of possible interest, the audio install has used the Alpine PDX amp and a Pioneer head unit, nothing wrong there. Standard fitment from factory is not very good, so this is IMHO an improvement. More importantly, the car is now able to be fitted with any double din of your choice easily as the wiring and amp stuff has been done. The wheels are either genuine Porsche 997 Turbo or a copy. If genuine, very desirable, if not, still one of the two best looking wheels you could choose (IMHO along with the RUF wheels), but this is of course a matter of taste.
Interesting they are both manuals, I don't know build stats but there are probably very many more C4S in auto than manual, I know that in my country, there are 2 manuals, and plenty of autos.
Drive both, buy one, be very happy!
Drive them both - pick the one you want. I recently went through this and picked a C4S Cab over a 997 C2 and several 996 Narrowbodies - that said - I didn't come across and 40th Anniversary in my searching
The C4S is such a sweet looking car and it does feel distinctly more stable and better put together than C2s. On the other hand, the 40th is without a doubt the most high performance 'regular' 996. It's easy to say I'd pick the 40th due to performance but honestly I think the C4S is one of the best looking cars ever made. I miss looking at mine.
Both are vey nice cars. I live in the Montreal area and have checked out that black C4S when it was up for sale last fall at the Roi du Camion...If I remember correctly, the car has 72 000 MILES and not km. Other than that the car was very clean and I was very close to buying it at the time. Swing by and go for a drive like the salesman suggested, both cars seem to be well priced, it comes down to personal preference.
I was looking a both options about 6 years ago. I went with the 40th for the all the nice touches it has and in particular the X-51 engine. Numbered 911's of any vintage are not common.
To me, the C4S was most impressive in terms of wide-body. However, it has a standard engine, it's heavier, there's extra maintenance for the AWD, and I don't need AWD in Southern California, or for my track events!
BTW it might be the lighting, but the rims look painted grey? The rims are shot blasted/polished for the 40th anniv and have a very bright silver appearance. 40th also came with a unique luggage set. Make sure you ask about that, though it's rarely provided with pre-owned 40th's. Good Luck and neither option would be "wrong."
I don't like the payments on either car. You pay about 10grand more over a 7 year period. Thats according to their figures. Not going berserk on either but would go for the C4 with lower miles. Would have preferred the C2 drive but put off with the mods. Obviuosly a young dudes car. I think they are both over priced and would walk away.
Besides the K&N intake, easily and cheaply reversed if desired, were there any other mods? Are all 40ths that low? Do they come with X74? IF so, then C2 for sure, especially if it is 99km for it and 120km for the C4. If you're considering an M3, then awd is not that important to you, but some trunk space may be. 40th C2 over the C4S, IMHO, better handling, faster, more powerful, sport seats! Prices start a bit higher at dealership, but you can usually deal them down more, if you can get a warranty, then it may be worth it to get there. $31k for that 40th would be fair with a warranty. And has to be cheaper than an '08 M3, no?
If you really need the back seats, get the M. 40th is way better on the track. Way better. Both will hold value. If you see snow or rain, might want AWD. Comes down to what you really want/need. Of the naturally aspirated 996s, X51 is probably the 2nd best ( or 3rd if you count GT3.1 as being different). "S" doesn't get you more muscle, but does get you some turbo parts.
I hit the track a lot and would pick the 40th without even thinking.
-td
Dang it! I was thinking C4S all the way for myself. Now I find out there's this 40th anny edition. More HP, LSD, less parts (lighter)..what's there not to like?
Well, the cons for me are: no wide body!!! and no S/turbo brakes!
I really love that wide body of the S!! I need to re-evaluate what I want. I think the 40th might be more fun at the track.
Not to thread jack, but some question:
-I was researching some more, and I read somewhere that the interior only came in grey. I've seen a couple of listings showing black interiors, does it come in black? (non-black is a deal breaker for me)
-The Anny comes with a sport suspension, does anyone know what suspension this is?
-Because it has the x51 package, do parts cost more to fix assuming it's the "same issue" when compared to a non-x51 equiped car?
-How are the brakes on an non-S/turbo car?
BTW, great timing for the thread. Makes me re-think everything.
It's a minor point... But the 40th has a larger front trunk and so is a bit better for long trips.
A 40th anniversary, wih luggage of course, could tempt me out of my current 996.
The 40th is lighter, faster, has a stiffer body, when compared to the C4, and comes stock with many nice driver type options including the sport suspension, interior bits and the premium Bose sound system. The The dark grey natural leather looks black but is actually near black like the lead of a pencil or graphite. Many think the color is black. The silver body is not as bright in person as the many online photos show. It is a dark silver with very fine metallic. I just payed $32k for mine with 60K miles. It has a virgin body with no damage, clean Carfax and most of the repair receipts, Bilstein coil overs, a strut brace (which may be original factory) and a short shifter.
Cheers,
Paul
Im not sure if there are any other mods. Whats X74? I would love to get it at $31k. Ill definately try if the PPI is good.
In my area '08 M3's with approx 75,000-90,000 km are going for around $40,00-$45,000. Its definately more expensive
Hello....,
My choice would be a C4S but as you probably live in Quebec (i'm living in Quebec also) you have to concider the fact that in Quebec we have winter time and a lot of snow.....
The M3 is more realistic if you want a car and use it all year long...
By the way a BMW M3 is really a fantastic car and believe me i know what i'm talking about....
So it is up to you now
Good luck
The 40th woul dbe my choice.
I prefer narrow bodies and 2WD - so there's that. The X51 is bonus and so are the powder coated wheels, although this is clearly a subjective thing. I simply don't like the wheels on the C4S, so it's a double plus from my perspective.
Sport seats in the 40th - very nice. Sport suspension is probably X74, but that or similar is easy to install in any car.
Price wise - Canadian prices are higher than US prices - so Hurdi - once again - STFU. $35K for a 40th isn't bad. $32K for a C4S is pretty good even...depending of course on condition in both cases.
Service records are important!!
Bon chance.
