Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace every 5000' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill marketing reasons as much as anything' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can anyone point me to a good discussion of which brand and weight oil to use in a 3.4 liter 996? My searches haven't turned up anything but popcorn smileys and anecdotal evidence. I'm trying to find something constructive to send to a friend who recently purchased an '01 C4.
Thanks,
Graham
Look no further as I did all the looking for you and your freind lol. 100% Synthetic MOTUL 8100 X-cess 5W-40W

if you want anything more than that. I can't give it to you but here is a link which will make you cross eyed. You will see MOTUL get a good mention on this page and for a good reason.

You can have it delivered to your door free via Amazon. I order 4 gallon at a time.
I still can't see any reasons Mobil 1 0W40 is not good enough for street use with ~5K / Annual changes. Yes it is factory fill for marketing reasons as much as anything - but the advantage this has over others that had been suggested is it is cheap (esp. on sale) and easily available. I'd use Castrol 5W40 also - but seems to cost more - are least in my region. For racing the answer might be different.
Porsche recommends specific oils for the 996. The dealer can provide this list to you, or you can look up the TSB for approved oils if you have access to TSBs.
Other than than list, you'll be going off of anecdotal evidence for the most part. I think the LN recommendations are very interesting. My independent mechanic specializes in repairing, tuning and racing Porsches. He's using Schaeffer Synthetic in all his Porsches now. There are lots of opinions on oil...
Wonder why Joe Gibbs DT40 isn't mentioned as the latest and greatest for our cars. I trust what I've read here by Jake and on the LN site. End of discussion and research for me. I'm going with the DT40 next oil change.
What targa996 says.
I'd add: Do you really want to assume the responsibility for advising your friend to possibly go against what Porsche says based on what you read/get from the 'net?
Swing by a local dealer, get an approved oil list printed out -- I get one every once in a while but of course I do have a good relationship with the dealers I interact with -- and give it to your friend.
There are plenty of good oils on that list for your friend to chose from.

About all I'd advise that is a bit contrary to what Porsche says is shorten the oil/filter change interval in half or even more, by 2/3rds (at least in one of my car's cases from 15Kmiles to 5K miles).
In short, change the oil/filter more often.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Excellent oil!
I use Liqui Moly 5w 40. Love it. The PO actually used Mobil 1. Maybe it is just me but since I have changed to LM I have noticed that the engine seems more quite than before. Like has been said on here before, you will most likely find pros and cons for every oil. If you stick to a good quality oil that Porsche approves you will have no problem.
