Remove screw when cool, and lubricate with silicone grease

So sure, you can put the screw in but its no more in place than it was before changing the grommet.

I noticed my rubber grommet was also bad (useless) on a recent filter change so I took the part number from here (999 500 092 00) and ordered it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I found that part number on pelican and other than the $5 a piece price it worked perfectly.
I am trying to to find a part for securing the from trunk trim parts ( trim pieces around the battery) There is a torx bolt used to hold down the trim that screws into a rubber grommet located in the metal piece below the trim. I need new grommets as they no longer provide an bite for the bolt. Pics below will show the bolt and grommet as well as the trim piece(s) in place on the car. I have tried to locate the part in the PDF for the car but I don;t see even where the trim pieces are referenced let alone where the grommet I need is. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I bought new ones. Looking thru my records and my online purchases but can't find receipts. I have it listed as "air box grommet" on a spread sheet I keep to track my expenses.
I'll keep looking.
RETRACTION: Sorry, air box grommet is not it, but i did replace mine, I'll keep looking
This is what I bought from Pelican, hope it helps
Oval-Head Screw for Pollen Filter Housing
Brand: Genuine Porsche

Nut for Pollen Filter Housing

While you're at it - (if you don't have it) you should order the clear plastic part that covers the VIN number on that trim. I'll post the part number later
I had this same issue: Torx screw present, but not grabbing the worn rubber grommet.
I managed to fix it, as follows:
1. Cut a short section of semi-clear polyethylene tubing
2. Super-glue this into the worn rubber grommet
3. Heat the end of the Torx screw with a heat gun
4. Screw the hot Torx screw into the plastic-lined bushing
5. Remove screw when cool, and lubricate with silicone grease
6. Re-install in 996
Notes:
#1 - length is ~5mm; tubing OD is ~6mm
#4 - hot metal forms internal threads in the plastic
#5 - silicone grease very useful for rubber and plastic parts
I found that part number on pelican and other than the $5 a piece price it worked perfectly. I probably should have ordered new bolts as mine a scratched up but then I can always just paint them. Thanks to everyone!
Mine have been stripped out for years but wasn't important enough to spend time looking. Thanks to everyone, we now have part numbers. Thanks, Rennlist!
Get a new rubber grommet, then with your old bolt, go to Ace and get a nice stainless steel phillips head screw and washer the proper size. Did mine like that years ago and it still looks perfect.
Sorry for reviving this thread but am I missing something here. I noticed my rubber grommet was also bad (useless) on a recent filter change so I took the part number from here (999 500 092 00) and ordered it. The part that came looks identical to all picture of that part on various websites. The screw can thread onto it and and can see the brass threads at the bottom...so I'm 99% I have the right part. However, If I place it in the hole where the old one was there is nothing to hold the rubber grommet in the hole. The old one(s) appear flanged and you would have to press fit them in....this one is just straight. So sure, you can put the screw in but its no more in place than it was before changing the grommet.
What am I missing?!
EDIT:
I JUST figured out how this works and had I actually fully installed it ...it would have been obvious.
The well nut has extra length on it so that the threads will force the rubber shaft to expand (thus flanged) similar to how a butterfly bracket works.
That being said, I understand why it fails....it puts the rubber middles section under constant pressure...it WILL fail again.
I didnt even bother getting OE replacement screws. They would probably rust and seize to the nuts again over time. I clipped in the large nylon insert used to what you screw in license plate mounts to the bumper (they fit perfectly in the existing hole), two number 10 x 1.5 or 2 (cant remember) Phillips head screws and 1 x 1/8 fender washers. I had to drill the washer out as I wanted a snug fit on the screw. The screws and washers were stainless and I painted the top black. Just snug the screws down and they worked great.
