I did run the standard ECU program for about 12months, but fuel usage was pretty high, so not sure it did an optimum adapt?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, After some quick guidance / advice, my LMS went about 2 years, rebuilt the 996 C4S to a LN 3.8 Nickies block, X51 headers, AWE 200 cell cat, IPD Plenum, EVO MS air box etc, Ran well for 30,000kms, then stopped - again! Turns out it was carbon build up on exhaust valves, so figure it must be too rich (I do a lot of city driving) as well as track time. Anyway, looking for suggestions on what anyone else might be running software wise in the standard ECU Any comments appreciated! Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Curious to see the responses. I have a LN 4.0 rebuild thar currently runs well though a little sooty at the pipes. Folks with lots of 996 experience have told me there really is no guarantee od ECU tune option for our cars.

POST 4Original post

White smoke at least occasionally on a cold start?

POST 5Original post

i too have done a LN 4.0L with Full Exhaust & Intake. i have the EVOMSit Tune but for the 3.6L with Full Bolt-On's. Talking to some shops they told me i don't really need a tune over what i already have the ECU will just Adapt. Any thought on Adaptation?

POST 6Original post

OP, Have you read the LN paper on fuel injectors? Do you have a Durametric? You’ll need to know your trim numbers and what each means. If you can get your digital hands on a copy of Porsche Advanced Technical Information, dated 3-06-06, on actual DME values; you can read the factory explanations. On this forum you can search posts from people like Ahsai and Porschetech3 to get more good info on trims. I think if you call Scott at Softronics he will gladly discuss the “do’s and don’ts” of tuning our ECUs. I have a 3.8 build and was trying to determine the best hardware and software configuration. The man opened my eyes with amount of knowledge he has about tuning our engines. He does some programming differently than others do for their in-house tuning, but he gets excellent results and he tells you how. I did research for many months before contacting him. He talked me out of putting on an IPD plenum and GT3 throttle body (for my intended use as a ballsy DD), and explained, in great detail, why. I have about 1,000 miles on his tune and am very pleased. Did it fix all my concerns? No. But I can see a good shift on my fuel trim numbers. Did it help my power band? Yes. I won’t be doing a dyno, but my 0-60 dropped .2 seconds and corner-out is better when I hold the revs. So no snake oil or empty promises. I agree with Zookie and Bill. Charles, Jake, Baz and Scott (and their staffs) will give you great recco’s on what can be done. What I really love is the quality of the information and the lack of salesmanship/gamesmanship. A tune may help alleviate some of your issue, but most certainly, not all of it. Good hunting!

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone for the comments, Yes, I have emailed LN direct, will see what comes back. I did run the standard ECU program for about 12months, but fuel usage was pretty high, so not sure it did an optimum adapt? Then I had a local tuner do a tune, and good results, track days, and Tarmac rally sprints were great fun! But it seems the daily driving was killing it slowly round town, its just about back on the road now, I'll head back to the local tuner see if we can have another look, and also i went and bought a daily driver! So now the 996 can have a more aggressive setup all round, and not get stuck in the commute... As always with these posts you end with some great pointers for further reading, so really appreciate that, thanks!

POST 9Original post

*Tracking* About to embark on a 4.0 build on an acquired 3.6 motor for my C4s.....

POST 10Original post

Are all these rebuilds engines you bought from Flat6 Innovations or LN directly? Or did someone else build them? Just curious and apologize for deviating from the subject. And regarding the "ECU will adapt", isn't that only true for certain operating points when the ECU is running in feedback mode?

POST 11Original post

This will be an interesting thread for me as well. I bought a 02 C4S with 3.8 engine off of a member here about a year ago, and bought that it ran rich due to soot on the exhaust, and the fact that if I don't wash it regularly, oily film covers the rear bumper. I did have the plugs replaced last fall and the shop did not mention anything unusual (I forgot to ask) but I was wondering if 200 cell cat just isn't efficient (I have no idea, just guessing)? I have stock throttle body and intake and was considering larger throttle body and plenum so it is interesting to read about the Softronic's advice. The car does burn oil, though. I added about 3-4 quarts in 5000 mile oil change, IIRC.

POST 12Original post

Subscribed. Currently working on a 3.4 to 3.8 rebuild. I still plan to use the GT3 TB and IPD plenum and perhaps use the injectors for the 3.6L. Also on the agenda is SAI delete. I was advised to talk wtih Softronic. Seems to me there's definitely a market for modified software for us guys doing these displacement increases.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 15695449

can you explain a little? My C4S is stock except underdrive pulley , fabspeed mufflers, fabspeed intake and i had been thinking about doing this next.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 15698273

Sure! If you contact Softronics youll be able to find out first-hand what they find works or not. You can get a feel for the type of code changes they make for your intended use. After I talked with Scott a couple of times, I knew the guy knows more about ECU than I could even ever fathom. The guy is a code whisperer. I was intending to put a plenum and GT3 throttle body on to go with my 3.6 to 3.8 conversion (200 cell), but didnt plan on track time very often. He explained where my torque band should be for what I wanted as a snappy DD, and what plus/minuses would be for different car and software setups.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 15694626

What do you mean "then stopped"? The exhaust valves got bent from carbon build up? Are you sure the engine isn't consuming excessive amount of oil?

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Engine lost compression, due to carbon build up on valves, running too rich down low speeds / rev's eg round town

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 15702258

Really? Wow,Hmm, I would think you would have been getting rich codes from the DME since that's where the 02 sensors do there job to control that. Got any pictures? Was it using excessive oil?

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 15702258

Can you please post some pictures of the exhaust valves? I've seen where carbon would cause the exhaust valves to start staying slightly open and then the valve would partially melt (looks like a V notch cut by an acetylene torch). This usually happens only to one valve in one cylinder and that would cause a rough idle and decreased performance. Never seen it to cause the engine to strop running. That's bizarre.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 15696661

I considered FSI, and they were honestly great to work with for preliminary planning. I went local with a guy who had built LN large bores before and done so successfully. Im pretty happy with the results, but honestly I doubt I spent any less than FSI nor saved much time. With FSI, that name carries a good bit of weight too...

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 15698273

on stock? I was talked out if it by the guy who did my 4.0L. He had a customer who did it on a 3.8 build, and they saw virtually no gains. Fabspeed x-pipe with 200 cell cats instead?

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 15695281

Ive pretty much heard the same thing about adaption. Yet, 7,000 miles on a rebuild & Im pretty sooty. Thats why Im following this thread closely.
