Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I checked the evap valve in the engine bay with a 9 volt and functioned properly.

I've replaced two starters for almost the exact same reasons.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi fellow Rennlisters. First let me start that my car has never actually left me stranded and it will always eventually start. Now the history. I have had the car for 6 relatively trouble free years. 2003 base carrera. When cold (so i assume it is related to some of the hot start issues people have) it fires up every single time. Now here is my intermittent issue. This issue started 5.5 years ago but never really bothered me, as it may have happened only 2 times per year, and its my daily so i drive it quite a bit. After a short or long drive, when i try to start it, it is like the starter skips or fails to catch properly resulting in a hick up and no start. then when i turn the key again, there 3 possible scenarios. 1. it starts after slightly longer than normal cranking, with an ever so slight stumble after starting.. 2. cranks for 5 seconds or longer, and eventually starts. again with a slight stumble. always drives fine after with no check engine lights. the 3rd scenario, that is most concerning / embarrassing, and has happened only 2 times, but within the bast 2 months is; like scenario 1, but then it sounds like the starter is screaming for a few seconds. i assume starter. before this starter (again i assume starter) i was always thinking the hot start cable issue for the longer cranking, and the flywheel position sensor, for the hick up. i am now ready to attack it. instead of just starting to throw money at a starter, cable, sensor, etc (i have to address my oil filler tuber i have been nursing along), i would like to be more targeted in my approach.
thanks in advance.
not sure if it matters, but i have a LWFW (not looking to get into the dangers of this type discussion
~).
I suggest you replace the starter. It sounds like the bendix is getting stuck/heat soaked. Also consider doing the Y-cable at the same time. I've replaced two starters for almost the exact same reasons. The original starter would get heat soaked and just go clunk. Stranded me a couple of times. So out with that and in went a Bosch rebuilt starter (yeah...to save a little money..HA HA). Lasted about a year and half and blew the bendix frame completely apart. Boy, what a sound that made!! Replaced with a new Bosch starter from Amazon. Good to go for about 5 years now. Get a brand new Bosch starter off Amazon.
Normally when CPS is going bad, cranks just fine but no start.
Confirm that the starter bolts are tight...if the bolts are loose and the starter has any play, the third symptom can happen.
That said, the starter is a known weak point; if you're going to go through the trouble to get to the starter to verify that it's tight, might as well test it and see if it needs replacing.
If your starter is as worn as the original in my '99 that finally gave up 3 years ago, you will be surprised by how much more quickly the car cranks - which may address your first and second symptoms.
I had the exact same issue last summer. Only after the motor was warm. Cold start, no problem. If it sat for several hours after driving, No problem.
I checked the evap valve in the engine bay with a 9 volt and functioned properly.
Now im not one to just throw parts in hopes of fixing but given what I read and the age of these cars, I just ordered the following and havent had the issue since:
-evap purge valve (at the filler neck)
-fuel level sensor (under the battery tray)
-new (not remanned) starter
hope that helps.
Starter, Y cable, and oil filler tube done yesterday. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. 3.5 hours all in. Got lucky, alternator bolt gave me no trouble. Trickiest part was getting the intake back in. So far no issues with starting or stumbling. Ill keep everyone updated. Oh and Y cable easy with soaking in hot water and racking off black box. No need to deal with power stealing or ac compressor. Man this starter is super strong!
I just went through this with a customer. He replaced everything on his own - literally every sensor, etc. Last thing were the injectors. A new set cleared up the problem.
