Mine is similiar but by-pass pipes are smaller and run straight from the top/inlet to outlet right at chrome tip attachment.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've seen this listed as a feature in several ads, as I've been looking around. Is this anything really special (besides the obvious advantages). Is there a different sound, etc.?
thanks!
Bill,
You may have stumped us. As far as I know there was only one OEM exhaust option and that is normally referred to as PSE. I suppose for advertising they may call it SS. Or I suppose it could refer to the many stainless steel aftermarket systems. I think you're going to have to have the seller clarify.
Jim
My 99 996 has the factory stainless steel exhaust with the chrome tips (I forgot the code number). I was at a PCA club run and one of the guys thought that it was a Fabspeed exhaust.
Those are not the factory SS tips. The upgrades Tequipment tips are the large ovals. Those look aftermarket. Your car's original owner might have ordered it intially with the factory tips but changed them over time. Regardless, the ones you have loog great!
Correct, there was an option for different tips. But, as Dell said, those don't look like the factory ones. They look the same as the B&B tips I had on my '99 (which are nice, but flimsy).
Also, I think the OEM mufflers are all stainless.
Thanks for the responses. What is the code? That way, I could check.
My original thought was that was a std. OEM exhaust, and it's just on these two dealerss lists as fluff.
Thanks again!
Noisy EXHAUST. Our recently acquired 2000 996 has an exhaust system the prev owner said is the "factory sport exhaust" and was $3000 xtra. Guys, don't laugh me out of here but I hate them and the neighbor hood is starting to hate my Porsche-loving lead-footed wife (bless her fun-loving heart!). Looking under with a light and mirror, I find a 1" pipe going from intake side of muffler to outlet end. At the top/intake end is a vacuum dashpot that appears to operate a butterfly via linkage. These pipes appear to simply be "Noise by-pass pipes". I can't tell what vacuum actually operates the butterfly or when. Disconnecting electric plug from the gadget that the vacuum hoses route to doesn't make it any quieter. My only thought here is that these may open during off-throttle coasting to give it that "deceleration burble", which isn't to bad. Anybody know this system? jVm
That's the OEM sport exhaust, a Tequipment upgrade for the '99-01 3.4 996. The early versions had a 5/8" bypass pipe between the inlet and outlet pipe of the otherwise standard muffler, it was made by Eisenmann. The vacum operated valve defaults to the open position when not hooked up. It's a great sounding exhaust IMO. Wanna sell them???
DJ, Thanks for the info, it helps. If only you guys could convince me it's a 'great sounding exhaust'. It can be heard rasping for blocks. They were the one 'turn-off' for this near perfectly optioned and maintained car. I have already been offered a trade but my wife kind of likes them....she is usually only obnoxious after 2 martinis but the sound of this car gives her one more outlet. I'm still trying to learn what "parameters" dictate opening/ closing of the bypass. Maybe I should discon. the vac lines and wire them closed to see what that sounds like.
Hi Gotta911, Tnx for the photo. Mine is similiar but by-pass pipes are smaller and run straight from the top/inlet to outlet right at chrome tip attachment.
And those 3.4L cans were superceded by the 3.6L cans shown in the Carnewal pic; i.e. these "3.6L" cans are the current fitment for 3.4L cars also. (fwiw).
This gets more interesting by the hour. Yes, Tim, mine are kind of like those but have dashpots and longer by-pass. I've seen some like mine on Ebay too. Seeing them made me go look under my car. tnx jVm
I just followed our thread noticing that was 5 years ago! Our 2000 996 has been trouble-free except for the following: The dashpot/actuator on the Left can is leaking. I tested with a vac pump and now I've removed the can and isolated it to the dashpot. Just for FYI and perhaps sick humor, I admit to
bypassing the solenoid by pulling the hose and hooking them together for some mellow quiet esp around the 'hood. My wife soon figured out how to go back to stock (Harsh noise) by putting the hoses back. I noticed my 'hack' was not working. The Vac was being lost thru the leak. The Real Question: does anyone know where I can get a new/newer dashpot? jvm
