Suggestion
If you checked your cam deviation after getting the misfires and there isn't a problem there (which would affect the entire bank obviously) then its not likely valve train related.

Given that you know you had rodents in the engine bay, I would start by inspecting all the wiring/vacuum lines that you can see after removing the air box.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I have a 1999 C2 with 100k miles.
Been plenty of brown/light yellow plastic stuff in the oil filter for the last oil changes. Cam timing is not off but think I will replace the pads. Unfortunately I will have to have a shop do it.
However I do have a brutal misfire on bank 2 that just appeared (P0300,P0304,P0305,P306,P0153)
Is there anything else I should do once the engine is out?
- Coils and Plugs
- AOS
- Coolant tank
A shop has qouted my $2600 for the pads and additional $1300 for the AOS/Coolant/Coils. Damn coolant tank is $600.
Thanks
I would consider doing the O-rings under the heat exchanger, and replacing all of the vacuum lines and vacuum tank. Just a lot easier to reach those parts when engine is out. Check the Y-cable to the starter for corrosion.
The sky is the limit for this type of question. IMS, Clutch, RMS, starter, idle bearings including the tensioner one. Your budget will dictate what you need beyond the coolant tank, AOS, coils and plugs. BtW, the prices quoted are farir.
That is crazy how expensive the oe tank is for gen 1 996. I know there has been a lot of discussion around that but I don't remember if there are any options short other than using an aftermarket tank which the conventional wisdom seems to discount.
I assume you are fixing your bank 2 misfire prior to dropping. Sounds like the bank 2 pre cat sensor is bad or something else affecting the entire bank.
Other than what DB mentioned, many would say to also replace the water pump and t-stat with low temp stat. very easy to do with the engine out.
My budget is already broken
Would you agree that AOS/Coils/Plugs/Coolant tank makes the most sense?
Will also ask them to inspect/replace vacum hoses.
Is there anything related to the fuel system? Any filters or FPRs that are a pain in the *** to replace with engine in car?
Not sure how I should tackle the misfire. It just appeared out of no where. Car was parked for 2 weeks then all of a sudden it started throwing codes on bank 2 almost directly when I started it.
I have a durametric so guess I will read the values.
The engine bay was FILLED with Acorns...wonder if acorns are known for causing misfires.
I replaced water pump a few months ago.
Then the critters got in there and probably chewed your engine wiring. Would account for Bank 2 misfires on all cylinders. Inspect the wiring harness carefully.
If there were that many acorns, there was definitely squirrels or mice, both of which love to chew on rubbery/wirey stuff for no apparent reason other than to create havoc. There are far better mechanics on this site than I am for trouble shooting but your first three codes are saying that cylinders 4, 5, and 6 (bank 2 which you said) are misfiring. The last code is saying it's getting unacceptable values from the oxygen sensor prior to the cat of bank 2. A bad oxygen sensor can cause misfires in an entire bank because it's giving feedback to the ecu for the entire bank. What you can be pretty confident of is that it's not something like coils, fuel injector, etc because all three misfires showed up at once. There has to be a common issue that can affect the entire bank. If you checked your cam deviation after getting the misfires and there isn't a problem there (which would affect the entire bank obviously) then its not likely valve train related. I guess it could be possible for some kind of fuel blockage to the entire bank 2 fuel rail but that seems really unlikely. I don't know if there is any kind of vacuum line that would affect only bank 2.
Given that you know you had rodents in the engine bay, I would start by inspecting all the wiring/vacuum lines that you can see after removing the air box. In particular I would look at the precat wiring from bank 2 (which is going to be on the left hand (driver side) of the engine unless you have a modified exhaust.
Like I said, I'm sure someone with more experience can chime in on the most efficient way to troubleshoot this.
When I replaced the waterpump I accidently swapped the O2 sensor wiring, the car behaved very similar. I will inspect the wires! (Even I have to say it sounds a bit insane).
Will also check the timing deviation.
started the car today, was a little rough first but then it ran just fine.
Wonder if it runs bad after sitting of if it was moisture somewhere (hasn't rained in 3 weeks...so sounds odd).
Cam deviation was -3 to -5 on bank2, less on bank1. When I enabled the selonid I could really here the idle go crap, so that is working.
