Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

First, I am in agreement that you MUST reseal your lights with a UV protectant.

For longevity, I recommend using a adhesion enhancer spray after sanding and just prior to clear.

I recently did this using Mckee's 37 Headlight Restoring kit from Autogeek and was very pleased with the result.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone tried the "refinish your headlamp" services available? I know you can attempt your own, but those seem to be hit an miss. Is the service worth it or am I best just buying a new headlamp? 2002 996.2. One light is perfect and the other is yellowish...

Lots of threads and opinions on this topic. I don't see the issue that clearly in your pictures. However, I recommend the Sylvania restoration kit. Follow the instructions to the letter and it will look like new. Should take you maybe an hour to do one light. Remove the light and do it on the bench.
You do know that a new drivers side headlamp is $2,132.95...right? Try a local detail shop because that will polish right up. And because that haze will just come right back, have the headlamps covered with something like X-Pel clear film. X-pel find an installer

The DIY kits are fine, but they are not permanent. The first time you polish the lens, you also remove any remaining clear coat and UV-resistant coatings.
I suggest picking up a can of clear coat + UV blocker, like SolaRay UV, to seal and protect refinished headlights. It adds to the cost of the job, but otherwise you'll be redoing the headlights every year or two (depending on sun exposure, garaged vs. not, etc.).
First, I am in agreement that you MUST reseal your lights with a UV protectant. As for the cleaning, if you have any scratches, you may need to start with 400 or 600 grit then working your way up (800 to 1200 to 1500 then 2000 grit) Then you can get into your rubbing-polishing compounds and finally the important UV Sealer. It takes time and is easier if you remove your headlights but worth it over spending $5k on a new set.
Note: if you clear coat with a high quality automotive grade paint, you do not need to polish the headlights. In fact, you shouldnt polish them. The fine scratches from the 1000 grit leave a tooth for the paint to adhere to. For longevity, I recommend using a adhesion enhancer spray after sanding and just prior to clear. This will help the clear stick to the polycarbonate lens and prevent pealing later on.
^^ This. I have done this on a number of vehicles after polishing away the haze / yellowing. 3M / Xpel or similar clear protective film. I usually buy a kit and apply the film myself (applies like window tint) unless it is some multi-angled lens like a Toyota headlight, in which case I have a pro do it..
This is a permanent solution - no more haze nor yellowing comes back after film is applied.
