Suggestion

It can backfire though, when I did my IMS I didnt replace the crankshaft sensor, then a few weeks later it failed and almost stranded me twice.

Suggestion · Original poster

For example, with 100k miles, I'm willing to bet that replacing all O2 sensors would likely improve the cars efficiency, but I'm not getting any CEL's and the car runs great.

Now just wondering about the lesser bits that most dont replace until failure/cel.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

One of the best discoveries I've made thus far as a new owner of a 996 is how easy they are to work on, which is great given my car is 15 years old, has a 100k on it and came with some but not complete records. Over the past 6 months I've worked to replace all the typical wear items these cars need (save a forthcoming brake job), more on that here if you care. Motor mounts will improve the car as will new suspension, but what about those that don't necessarily improve me enjoying of the car? For example, with 100k miles, I'm willing to bet that replacing all O2 sensors would likely improve the cars efficiency, but I'm not getting any CEL's and the car runs great. Is this is a situation where you cast aside preventative maintenance until there's an issue: when the car tells you it needs those with a CEL? At what point does PM becoming needless spending?

POST 2Original post

Id probably say replace things that prevent expensive collateral damage later. IMS being the classic one, an $800 LN bearing is cheap insurance against a $12k engine blow up. That and things that are really worn or end of life, water pump, belt etc It can backfire though, when I did my IMS I didnt replace the crankshaft sensor, then a few weeks later it failed and almost stranded me twice. It was $90 to replace and about an hour or two. So now I have AAA premium

POST 3Original post

Things like O2 sensors can wait. Lots of other stuff you can do. Coils and plugs make a difference if they are getting old. The big stuff like the IMS, AOS, rear seal can be done in combination with doing the clutch.
