The sensitivity is really good on all radar bands, but of course, nothing really can prevent you from getting tagged by Lidar laser detection, with the exception of either a Laser Shifting device OR simply using Escort Live.

Anyway, I've used many radar detectors in my time, but find the Escort Max series to be some of the best to help avoid getting speeding tickets.

I use the Uniden R3, and made my decision based on online reviews by Vortex Radar (YouTube.) This unit gets very early detection, and regular updates from Uniden, so I'm quite happy to say the least.

I also just purchased an Escort Redline and quickly noticed that the dual antenna design is much more sensitive than the Max series, but is for designed for highway driving than city since it doesn't use the same method of alerting the driver such as built-in GPS speed alerts, but it can connected to Escort Live via their optional cable which will give you updates on speed changes, speed cameras, and such.

I understand he believes he's doing his job, but when it becomes a game like the football running back wanting to break the 2000 yard college record; well, you have to ask yourself, "is he out there trying make himself look the best or really wanting to make the roads a better, safer place?"

Although other devices such as cell phones and fastrack are acceptable to the police (although still not legal to mount) the cops are not so forgiving on radar detectors and will write you up.
Well, just wanted to post a question for discussion seeing how I was driving my 996 up to the mountains without my radar detector and wasn't intending to speed, just didn't watch my speed when it dropped from 65 - 45 mph. Yep, our trusty state trooper clocked me going 59 in a 45. Of course, going 59 in a Porsche feels like you're standing still and so I didn't feel like I was speeding. And get this... I was also driving with a group of normal cars and was selected among the rest to be "an example". Yay me!!! Yep, that's the "Porsche-tax" syndrome. He was probably thinking, "Yea, let's get the 'Porsche guy' and make an example out of him!" Uggh!
Anyway, I've used many radar detectors in my time, but find the Escort Max series to be some of the best to help avoid getting speeding tickets. I love the fact that when you're driving in a town you're not familiar with, the Max will alert you when you're going over the speed limit and when you approach one of those awful speed camera intersections, the Max will alert you to slow down. The sensitivity is really good on all radar bands, but of course, nothing really can prevent you from getting tagged by Lidar laser detection, with the exception of either a Laser Shifting device OR simply using Escort Live. If you don't know about Escort Live, it's the new generation equivalent of flashing your head lights to alert drivers about speed traps. The Escort Live community can send alerts on the Escort Live iPhone or Android mobile application. Anyone can download the app and monitor, but only subscribers can contribute. I just wish I had it when I was driving to the mountains.
Well, my big question for discussion is...
What kind of radar detector do you use? Please explain why you use that brand and any experiences that you could share with the RL community is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!!
I am partial to the Valentine V1. I use it in cars and on bikes, and it's served its intended purpose on many an occasion.
Sucks that you were singled out for the ticket amongst a group of potential recipients, but ya gotta pay if you wanna play.
I love my ESCORT 9500xi. Its ability to remember signals that it should ignore is terrific (very few false alarms). The Valentine 1 is probably better at detection (and they tell you the direction the signal is coming from), but ESCORTs are way more user friendly.
V1. I like the arrows. but I am partial to the K40 "difuser"
Alot of my customers cars have them and they have saved my *** more than a few times for high speed driveability complaints.
Valentine 1 would be my second choice, but they seemed to be lagging behind with false alert filtering, GPS lock out, etc... but their unit's sensitivity is in line with the Redline, but the filtering is lower and I've heard that is one of the biggest complains which causes the user to ignore the real alerts because it goes off all the time. I'm not knocking it, but just got to know the tool you're using so that it is useful and not an annoyance.
Tell me more about the K40. I've seen this company for some time on Rennlist, but wondered what a unit costs and how it compares to the Redline, Max, or V1. Your thoughts? Thanks!
Valentine V1 for me as well, although the last few years have become a pain with all the new blind spot detection features on certain cars setting it off all the time. I checked into upgrading it with Valentine because they have a fix for this, but for the price they're asking, I might as well buy a new one.
You have to be very observant. BTW, getting singled out is not new. I've been pulled over -- State trooper in AZ -- and he told me holds sports car drivers (and LEO's) to a higher standard. I'm sure he's not the only LEO who feels this way.
As he's telling me this I'm thinking there are more mini vans and similar cars on the road be driven in ways far worse that me going 10mph over the limit and that they constitute a far greater threat but kept my mouth shut and as it turned out accepted the warning.
On the road often I spot a LEO sitting just inside a slower speed zone awaiting the unwary so I'm always careful to have my car's speed at the lower speed *before* I enter the lower speed zone.
BTW, because tickets are issued in such a subjective manner, I fight every ticket. In most cases I enlist the help of an attorney who's office specializes in tickets (most often though it is the biggies like DUI) and so far in every case the ticket has been dismissed. The officer fails to show up.
As for radar detectors I've owned a V1 since sometime in 2000. At the time my research had it to be the best unit. It has been a fine piece of equipment and saved my bacon many times. It helps keep me situationally aware which saves me from possible accidents too not just tickets.
I've never owned any other detector and would I buy another detector I'd get another V1.
Looking into an Escort 360 as I got popped last Wednesday evening. They gave me a ticket for 87 although I was a bit above that. They saw me flash my lights in the far left lane to signal a slower driver to move right. Any 360 users?
V1 and Waze
2+ years ago the first two weeks I owned the car, I was always 17 or so over
have calmed down quite a bit and learned to pick my spots
no paper to date
I was tempted to get a Escort Max360 since it's the best of both worlds (i.e. V1 and Escort Max), but it's crazy expensive at over $600. I've been a Beltronics/Escort customer for many years and they sent me a discount code for the Redline. I've always wanted one of those units and happy to finally get it.
One thing that a lot of people *don't* talk about is the types (i.e. sound, vibrate alert, etc.) of the alerts. One of the problems I had with other detectors, including the V1, is the beeps tend to blend into the ambient noise of the car. Guess it's also my poor hearing, but I have to turn Beltronics and V1 loud to hear the beeps over the road noise and radio. However, the Redline and Max series use grunt type tone sounds which really punch through the ambient noise of the car AND if you have Escort Live enabled, your phone will vibrate too. I know the V1 has an optional speaker system, but still, I prefer the sounds of the Escort series over other brands.
The fact that Federal Law allows truckers to move up to 80,000 pounds of weight on interstate highways, proves that a semi traveling at 80 mph with that much weight can do MORE damage than a 3000 pound sports car going the same speed. I would even argue that a sports car is better equipped to avoid accidents. But the problem is the attitude of the average sports car driver vs. the professional driver in a semi. I worked at a truck stop and most of those guys are very compliant to the requirements and laws associated with their profession and they understand their livelihood depends on safety and dependability as a trucker. But unfortunately, the average guy in a sports car are known to drive recklessly on the highways. Thus, causes all sports owners fall into a stereotype and may explain why we're pulled over more than the average Joe in a Prius.
Semi-trailer accidents are very common too and when those suckers lose control it causes a tremendous amount of damage and loss of life. Just found this online for GA:
http://www.mlnlaw.com/articles/georg...nt-statistics/
I have an inexpensive Whistler from the auto parts store. In the city it's a nuisance with the false alarms, but it's worth its weight in gold on the highways. I've traditionally relied on being situationally aware, but the ability of the 996 to defy local ordninances forced my hand into radar detector ownership.
Last weekend I was working on a personal best high score out by the salt flats, only to get 3 alerts that ended up being police on the return leg of the journey :O. Fun times.
For now the Whistler works and has directly saved my hide as many times as I let it.
"19% of truck drivers admit that they’ve fallen asleep at the wheel in the previous month"
Automation will be welcome in my book, out here truckers slow 75mph zones to 50 or less on steep grades while passing. Pretty annoying and dangerous to intorduce their soeed differential to the fast lane(s).
I've been running the Escort 360 Max for around a year now. I'm using Escort Live with it and have been really happy with it. I has without a doubt paid for itself. It does a much better job than my last one at filtering out the radar assisted driving aids on many cars.
I had a 9500ix that I was happy with, but it developed the "reset power" error. When you reset power, all seems good, it simply no longer detected radar!! It also was pretty noisy about cars with radar driving aids such as lane assist and automatic braking.
V1 upgraded three times, works well in my cars and motorcycles. However if your doing over 100MPH "Foget baght it" get a good attorney or make sure officer friendly sees your retired military ID card.Works every time.
One of the nice things about the Esort/Passport products is that they have a program very similar to Waze as part of the package. It relies on data from other users to update an active network of threats, much like Waze does. If your detector picks up a threat, it automatically marks it on the map for other users. I think Cobra may have something similar now.
Countermeasure defense apps like Waze are only as good as the community that supports them. In addition to the Waze and Escort Live... Valentine has an app (not the same as Waze or Escort Live), and yes, even Cobra has the iRadar app. But I wouldn't recommend Cobra radar detector... they produce substandard products and have poor customer support. I've purchased many products in the from Cobra in the past, but I've had to stop using them because of the low quality. Such a shame.
Problem with Waze is you have to rely on other people. Plus Waze won't help if the threat just showed up and your the first on the scene kicking it up a notch.
All of these devices are just tools. You can layer them up. But the best defense is to keep your head on a swivel and constantly be looking down stream. Your eyes are really your best defense along with the electronic gadgets as support.
Good timing on this thread.
I was asking the V1 vs. Max 360 question earlier today and found this thread.

Here in California it is not legal to use a detector or a jammer. With that said, I have been looking into getting one and this post is helpful. My question is, I have always been told that by the time your detector has identified the radar it's too late, they got you. Is this true:
Thank Eddie... Great article and test!
Did you go to the RDForum link?
http://www.rdforum.org/showthread.php?t=44373
Pretty neat and fair analysis of many of the leading brands of radar detectors. The V1 did extremely well in most of the tests, but if I'm not mistaken with the results, the RL and Radenso Pro outperformed the V1 as well as the Max2, K40, and of course all of the lesser brands (i.e. Cobra and Whistler).
And so what detector are you going to choose?
In the past I used a Whistler for years and years, and it did a great job on interstates. It did give way too many false alarms in town (as another poster stated). That thing saved me from would have surely been thousands of dollars worth of tickets. These days, I have been using an Escort Solo S2 cordless (uses 2x AA's) which seems to do a pretty good job. Picked that one because I found it at a community yard sale in its original box for $40 and because it's cordless.
When I first got my 911, I was on the interstate in the middle of a pack of cars all going the same speed (85 in a 70) and I was singled out as well. What infuriated me the most was that there was a Mazda CX-9 (their biggest SUV) that was weaving in and out of traffic and seemingly trying to provoke me into a race. My 7 year old was with me and was even asking why we got pulled over instead of the "red car." And the cop made some snide comment along the lines of "I don't know or care about what happened two mile ago, you shouldn't have been speeding. I let it go and paid up. Became familiar with the Porsche tax that day. It was funny hearing my little guy defend me when we told my wife what happened.
I found that I typically drive my '05 Acura RL quicker than my 911 and with much less worry.
Started using Waze as well, but only just recently so I can't offer much feedback on that as of yet.
It is legal to use a detector in California. It is illegal to use a jammer.
As to your question , Depends on what you get hit with . Some radars like POP give you less of a chance of skating free. If you're seen by Laser nothing can save you .
In most situations A detector works well and will give you plenty of notice. In some cases a mile or more notice . My Beltronics V995 combined with Escort live has saved me more times that I can count .
I have a new V1 and I love it. It is hard wired and I leave it on all the time(when engine is running), and turn the volume down. It works great, and i don't have to be blind to radar ahead or behind.
Yes, just looked that up. What I found was that although it is legal in CA it is not legal to have anything mounted to the front windshield. Although other devices such as cell phones and fastrack are acceptable to the police (although still not legal to mount) the cops are not so forgiving on radar detectors and will write you up. This state S---Ks.
This, as already pointed out, is not true. You cannot interfere with laser/radar, but you are free to detect it. I had a very long conversation about my detector (with the SmartCord Live) with a CHP officer who pulled me over for a tag warning (my 996 was new to me; the new sticker for my personalized plates never arrived).
This was back before we got rid of red-light cameras; he commented that folks like us who KNEW the red-light intersections were ahead generally helped prevent accidents. Cool guy.
Anyway, Tex, if you want a detector, get one - you won't be breaking the law.
As far as "once you detect it, it's too late" - if you're on a desolate highway and you're the only car on the road, probably. And as far as laser detection - if you're the one getting lased, you're probably getting the ticket. But in San Diego, most of the cops are still using KA and they leave it on - I'll get a half mile or so warning depending on geography and the direction the CHP car is oriented. I can't even guess how many tickets I've avoided because of the detectors - but my wife, who was not down with the initial purchase, was the one who insisted we have one in every car.
You're welcome b3freak.
No idea which RD I will go with. I just heard of the Radenso so there is a bit more research to do, but I do like its price compared to the V1 and 360.
I like the idea of hard wired with a blendmount.com set up.
Eddie
Always V1 along with...
Blinder M27 / M47 laser jammer (definitely works)
(I decided to leave it on my Porsche when I traded it in) i do my best to drive chilll and have no worries.
I mostly city drive and only use the V1 on trips to whistler, BC... the V1 paid for itself first trip lol
There is a fishing hole where the highway speed drops suddenly to 60k/hr from 80/km (lions bay)...well everybody on that highway is doing about 95-105+ so when they hit that spot, the west van pd, stops you and you receive a $468 ticket for excessive speed, an immediate vehicle impoundment for at least seven days, along with multiple points that increase your future insurance premiums for at least 3 years and perhaps a minimum 2 + month licence suspension ... then when you finally get to pick up your vehicle you pay for the towing and storage fees on the tow yard lot, plus you get to deal with how your cars condition is now in..(mine had the 997 key broken apart, I was lucky to locate all the pieces in the car, including the "pill"
(In BC if you are 40km over the posted speed limit (25mph) you start down the path described above)
The posted speed in North Vancouver is 80km/hr, then into west van it jumps to 90km/hr, then at Horeshoe bay drops to 80/km...then fish trap 60km/hr
Hope this helps, its important to be aware of these things...
Oh I forgot, the bill to take a taxi from way out in west vancouver to go back home, probably from far away as whistler is a ski resort far removed from downtown Vancouver
This is how it is here;

I love Cpl. Grant Gottgetreu's response to this question:
“Am I making a difference? I don’t know.”
I understand he believes he's doing his job, but when it becomes a game like the football running back wanting to break the 2000 yard college record; well, you have to ask yourself, "is he out there trying make himself look the best or really wanting to make the roads a better, safer place?"
Like a lot of places, speeding fines have become a necessary part of local law enforcement's budgets. Unfortunately, that means they put pressure on their traffic cops to set up "speed traps" to grab as many speeders as possible. We have two areas in North Georgia, where the state had to come in and reprimand the local cops because they were doing nothing more than sitting 24/7 tagging speeders doing *anything* over the speed limit. The state's argument was that there was other things the traffic cops could be doing to promote safety instead sitting parked around a curve everyday running radar. Plus, they were setting people up, by driving their cop cars on the left lane and then quickly moving right in front of a car, then pulling those cars over for following too close to an emergency vehicle. Were they issuing warnings? Nope, statistically the state reported they were giving instant tickets in most every case. Can you see the pattern here? That's why I mount a camera and radar detector in my daily driver, because I want evidence if I ever get pulled over unlawfully.
Personally, safety and responsibility is the key. And my argument is that if I'm driving in a group of cars in an unknown area where the speed dropped from 65 to 45 mph in less than a mile, am I really being unsafe at 59 mph? I felt like I was creeping along and get this.. there was a Honda MiniVan in the passing lane, but I'm the one that got the ticket. Ugh!
Well, got my Escort Redline mounted and hard wired into the 996. I put it high on the windshield to get the best reception and I must say that thing is super sensitive. It picked up K and KA bands farther than my Escort Max2.
THANK YOU HURDI for showing me the telephone connection to wire in a 12V switched source. That saved a lot of trouble.
And thank you to all that contributed to this thread. I downloaded the Waze app and really like it a lot. It seems to have a great network of users, plus I love the Bluetooth audible alerts to remind you when the speed changes. (that's what got me the ticket last month) Situation awareness is my thing and with the two running side by side, I can relax more when driving the Porsche up to the mountains.
Cheers!
V1 + Bluetooth adapter + Android Phone with Yavi1 and Waze
I don't think I can use the V1 without Yavi1. It does too much false detections but once you custom set all the correct frequencies with Yavi one, it runs awesome!
I'd recommend V1 as well. I had an escort 8500 and it was complete crap. Would randomly false for no reason at all. I've gotten 2 speeding tickets in my life and BOTH times I had that piece of junk in the car. I've since thrown it into the trash. Literally, one time I got a ticket and it never went off. The cop even commented that he is surprised I was going so fast because the detector should have told me he was around the corner (he had been driving in the opposite direction). I replied that it didn't work very well, then, on cue it went crazy beeping. It had been quiet the whole time with the police car directly behind me with radar on - then after 5 minutes decided to make noise. Complete junk and obviously defective - I'd imagine most of them work fairly well, but I'll never consider buying one due to my first experience.
Story #2 - back in high school a friend of mine bought BOTH the passport 8500 and a V1. We did a very unscientific test (found one of those 'your speed is' signs and saw which one alerted first). The V1 did.
Finally, the third story/reason to go with a V1. Mike Valentine (the guy that created the V1) is a Porsche enthusiast. I've seen his cars at Porsche events here in Cincinnati (last year a 918 and this year a GT3RS).
Been pulled over a few times in CA and other states with the radar detector suction cup mounted at the top of the windshield. Cop could care less, with one exception.
Had police cars, highway patrol cars come up behind me with the radar detector mounted at the top of the windshield. In fact I was in my Boxster and a MO state trooper pulled up behind me and I watched him as he reached down and I guess turned on his radar gun. 'course, the V1 went crazy and and the LED lit up and flashed. No reaction from the officer.
In one case -- in TX -- I got pulled over for speeding when it was a car that was passing me that was speeding. I had slowed down because the V1 was warning me the police car was ahead and I had heard the reports over the CB radio from the truckers and a driver got impatient and zoomed around my car just as we crested a rise with the cruiser ahead in the median. In this case I pointed out to the officer that I had the V1 and knew he was ahead of me a mile or more before I reached his position. He gave me a warning.
The one exception was when I got pulled over in AZ just west of Williams and the state trooper gave me some static about the radar detector and NAV unit mounted on the windshield. I pointed out when driving into the sun with the visor down the visor blocked more of my vision than the two items on the windshield.
The trooper got testy and told me he could confiscate both units if I insisted on not removing them. I complied and believe it or not kept the units off the windshield until I crossed into NM. Sometimes an officer will call ahead and let another officer know about a stop and just when one thinks it is safe and puts the radar detector or whatever back up again bam here comes another cruiser.
But I didn't get pulled over again but I was prepared and clean.
Oh, I got pulled over for not signaling. I was so tired I was falling asleep at the wheel and just wanted to get off the freeway. I didn't cut him or anybody off just moved over and off the freeway taking the ramp.
The officer made a big show of having me work the signals which of course worked fine. (I think I was so sleepy I might have been working the OBC stalk instead of the turn signal stalk before but I didn't argue.) Told me he expects better driving from us Porsche drivers. Got a warning though no ticket.
This is why I mount (no suction cups) to the upper portion of the windshield in the tinted area which makes it easier to drive without obstacles in my line of sight and keeps the PO-PO off my back. I don't mine suction cups, but I can't stand all the wires hanging down. That's why I prefer to hard wire my units to direct switched power.
Well, the 8500 has been around a while is definitely not up to par with current Escort Max or Redline technology and I wouldn't say it a fair comparison to the Valentine V1. The V1 is better matched in capabilities to the Max360 or Redline. I have much respect for both companies, but it appears you had a defective 8500 unit based on your comments above. However, the 8500 is value performer and not considered their top of the line. Of course, Valentine doesn't fool with multiple models, but just sticks with provide one model with the best performance. However, as many have noted, upgrading the unit is expensive and one would be better off just replacing it. With Escort, firmware and software updates are free. Defender database files are free for a year and then you can pay a low annual fee to continue. I've been using their units for years with no problem at all. The Max is the most radical change in detectors since it directly links to Escort Live to provide additional supports. You can run both Waze and Escort Live side-by-side. The V1 really never got off the ground with live mobile alert communities like Escort Live. But still, the V1 is a great unit.
Again, you're comparing apples to oranges. The Valentine 1's performance is better matched to the Redline in Highway mode. Side by side, you'll see a huge difference. In some frequencies, the V1 will perform better and in others, the Redline. Another thing to note is the Redline is invisible to Spectre (i.e. radar "detector detectors") unlike the V1. But of course, the V1 will give you 360 degree support. Bare in mind, most threats are from the front. The Redline will still perform very well from rear radar bursts. I wouldn't be surprised if Escort's next version of the Redline will give 360 coverage will all of the current capability.
hahaha. that's cool! but I'm not sure I want to make a radar detector purchase based on the car preferences of the company's owner. Be like buying a Pro Mac because Steve Jobs drove a Mercedes.
Thanks Charlie!
I got bagged years ago going 88 in a 55 in my 944. A friend I was following in his Taurus going the exact same speed was written up for only 65. I went to court and got the ticket dismissed.
Got tagged for going 33 over the speed limit and they didn't put you in jail? hahaha
But you went to court and got it dismissed and so what was your excuse? The "Taurus made me do it!" or... "The officer must of got the wrong reading and it was actually the guy in the Taurus doing 88"???
Nice!
Escort solo S3. No cords and works great. Can be mounted anywhere because of no cords and can be moved to multiple vehicles.
To the OP. 33mph over?? Should have pulled a Seinfeld and stated to the officer..." Only 33mph over? I must have slowed down to take that last turn......"
I understand the Escort Solo 3 is popular because of the convenience of being cordless, but I wouldn't put convenience over performance when it comes to radar detectors. The Escort S3 is known to perform poorly when compared to the Redline and V1. The S3 alerted KA/K band at almost 2500 feet less in capture distance tests. But if you're happy with it, than more power to you.
btw... funny advice on the Seinfeld remark! hahaha
I work with alot of LE and know their tactics and that can make a world of difference not relying blindly on the radar detector. Its a drivers aid. That said, I have found the S3 to be better than my last S2 which paid for itself many times. Where you mount the detector also makes a huge difference in its effectiveness.
Not sure of the exact price point. This is the company I went through. Talk to Tom for a package deal.

Good idea. TMF2 (n/k/a Junk Fighter) does help with false alerts but to make it a great RD get a dedicated Android phone (with no service - its GPS (for app) and wireless (Play Store) will still work) ) and install YaV1 app.
Transforms the V1.

Just glad I had my Escort Redline last night. Went for a nice 1 hour drive and it saved my butt 4 times. I couldn't believe how many cops were out running radar on a Tues night. 2 of the cops were within a 5 mile radius. Ouch. And we all know driving these cars at 55 mph feels like you're standing still. On the way back, I was driving on a country road listening to the radio and thought it felt like I was only going 40ish mph, but looked down at the speedometer and it said 65 mph. hahahaha!
The special mount comes with 3M industrial double stick tape. Holds stronger than any suction cup. You can get the special mounts for your radar detector on Amazon or eBay. Should have no problem mounting on a 991.
This thread has been incredibly helpful. I am a new Porsche owner and new to these forums. I wasn't even considering a radar detector until I stumbled upon this thread! Thanks for the advice and contribution b3freak.
I just ordered my 2nd V1 for my 911 (the other stays in my other car). I am trying to figure out where to stealth mount the concealed display. I do not like the visibility of the concealed display on the steering column. Has anyone put it anywhere else?
Uniden R3. However Lots of state cops use laser making the detector pretty useless. It has saved me driving through town with local cops using Constent on Ka
I use the Uniden R3, and made my decision based on online reviews by Vortex Radar (YouTube.) This unit gets very early detection, and regular updates from Uniden, so I'm quite happy to say the least. I've had it for about 6 months now.
How are the new Escorts handling all the junk Ka coming from other cars' collision avoidance systems? I've found my old 9500i has become pretty useless because of it.
My Max 360 got an update last summer that made it silent with all of that stuff. It went from an Acura/Cadillac/Buick/Mercedes defector to a police radar detector. Im very pleased with it, been driving with it for 2 years now, saved me thousands of times.
My advice is to simply modify your behavior.
1. Radar detectors only work when the radar or laser is on. Police often simply wait until they see a potential target before activating the radar/laser. All the detector can tell you is that you have been pinged, which is a little too late in most cases.
2. Some states they are illegal.
3. They really are unnecessary and if you are stopped they can give the officer the impression that you regularly flaunt the law.
I have over 120,000 miles clocked on my bright Guards Red GT3 and have never been ticketed. I'm no saint, but I know what I can get away with and what disturbs law enforcement. If you want to play hard, go to the track or your local autocross, but street driving is not the place to perform risky behavior.
Know the law and know what officers are looking for. Let someone else speed. I love to have someone passing me, as they make good ticket fodder. Their brake lights also make a good LEO detector. Don't speed in residential areas!
Also, stay alert. Watch for speed limit changes, obstructions, pedestrians, etc. I have spent so long making a point to always know what the speed limit is that it is a habit.
Lastly, don't appear to be reckless in your maneuvers — be smooth.
All of the above works for me and I drive my car all over the place along the east coast. Talk to a few officers about what raises their hackles. I find most to be pretty candid and good people.
Your first point has been demonstrated to be untrue for 99% or the radar encounters Ive had over the years Ive been driving with my Max 360 for radar in the northeastern US. Police drive around with their radar on constantly. Most of the time my detector warns me half a mile or more that there is a steady radar that is getting closer to the front and I have forever to slow down. On tighter backroads it is closer, but it still gives me plenty of warning. For those encounters where they arent simply leaving it on, itll alert then shut off as they hit traffic in front of me. What if there are no other cars? Im not going fast because there is no one else to warn me, or Im accepting the risk of a ticket.
As for laser, I get hit with it occasionally, but it is less than 1% of the time that the detector goes off, and it is always on nice sunny warm days, usually on 95 in NH. Even then with the Escort Live feature I have usually gotten an alert from someone else getting hit and the detector starts counting down the distance to where they got hit counting down from 6000ft or so and closing as I get closer and the detector pointing to where it happened.
Having an RD doesnt mean that you stop acting responsibly or stop being observant. It is just another tool that increases your awareness. Also, they are only illegal in VA and DC.
Granted on the first point. If they set a trap, then things may be different.
All that aside, my point is that you can still enjoy your car safely and avoid tickets without a radar detector.
The caveat is, some areas and states are more aggressively patrolled than others. I feel your pain if you live in such a place.
Short, funny story: My third and last ticket was over 15 years ago in Ohio. Not long after I got it, the mayor of that small town fired all the police officers and padlocked the police office because the local businesses were complaining about the speed traps and their negative impact on businesses. Some departments and officers just go to far, but most just don't want to have to respond to an accident scene.
