Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hello all! does anyone have recommendations on the best 200 cel sport cats for a 996 c4s with pse?? Fabspeed looks nice but rather pricey. any more group buys for a set? thanks! leon

POST 2Original post

I got mine from Design911 in the UK - very happy with the look, fit and sound.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks! What brand? Did you install them yourself?

POST 4Original post

very reasonable pricing on Design911's site. http://www.design911.com/Porsche/996...-cmo110-ct350/

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone know if there's going to be some type of group buy sale on 996 cell sport cats??

POST 6Original post

I dig the FVD 200 Cell X-Pipe. Here's a clip I did a while back paired with my Fisters. You Tube

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you! I am leaning towards the FVDs currently. Seem reasonably priced.

POST 10Original post

Goes without saying, but keep an eye on the Rennlist classifieds. That's where I got my Fabspeed mufflers (and sold an extra set of Fabspeed tips).

POST 11Original post

Speedtech seems to be reasonably priced. I've no direct experience, but will eventually get 200 cell cats and they are at the top of my list at the moment

POST 12Original post

I know they are pricey, but the Fabspeed 200 cell sport cats are worth the price, IMO. You already know how they sound when paired with the PSE, plus they work well with the O2 sensors and don't trigger any codes. BTW, when you get in there to install the cats, disconnect the electronic controls to the PSE, and then wire or solder the muffler flaps so that the PSE stays open all the time. This gives a great burble even at idle.

thanks all! All this hype about 993s have got me a little confused. Ive listened to a ton of videos of modded 993s and 996s and in terms of animalistic exhaust noises the 993 does not trump the 996. I understand there are other driving dynamics im sure the 993 is better at but i still think ita crazy the artificial prices of those older cars. Of course im probably biased but i dont think a 996 with pse and nice cats takes a back seat to any 911 in any generation. Just my 50 cents.... Btw are the cats a simple enough diy job??

POST 14Original post

Don't let the 993 hype fool you. The 993 is the last of the air cooled Porsches, that's all. The 993 is nostalgia, but the 996 is the better car. Look at all the performance stats. You'll skin some knuckles getting the O2 sensors in right, but otherwise, the cats are an easy DIY.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14341982

yes i agree with you fully from everything ive seem, heard, and tried. The 993 is not a better car. Might have better build quality but in terms of performance and sound it doesnt beat the 996 that is nicely modded. thanks i will be going the 200 cell route!

I'm very happy with my speedtech x pipe. Quality built (to order). No CEL. Nice change in sound. As far as install, it's probably the most painless exhaust work I've done on any car. Pretty easy. Get yourself an O2 socket adapter.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14343995

awesome, does the speedtech come with the o2 socket adapter? If not i assume they sell it? im just worried about rusting of the bolts on stock cats.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 14344023

It's a special tool available at any auto parts shop. Just makes easy work out of r&r of the O2 sensors. Google it for a picture. Here's the xpipe

awesome thank you!

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 14343995

Moburki, do you mind commenting on the "nice change in sound?" Speedtech advertises that their x-pipe gives a higher pitched exhaust note, but it would be great to hear a real-world opinion. How's the sound different from stock at lower revs (<4k), and then higher up in the rev range? Thanks!

POST 21Original post

I noticed a deeper tone at idle immediately. I am on stock mufflers still. Definitely more sound out of the car at higher rpms with the hammer down. I would call it a wail? Really nice to hear as the stock set up made no noise at all it seemed. However, I think the change would be more significant if I had my mufflers modded with bypass (fister or gundo). I have no noticeable change at sedate driving speeds, including highway. If windows are down, around town there is a pleasant "howl" if you hold gears just a little longer like 4-5 k. Summary: not a huge difference but a nice improvement over stock sound.

POST 22Original post

I'm thinking about getting the Fabspeed 200 CEL cats as well. Has anyone in California tried using 200 CEL cats and and passed the smog check?

POST 23Original post

If you're in CA and it's not the stock cats, you won't pass visual regardless of tailpipe sniffer and OBDII results. No comment on whether cracking the cats open and replacing the element will let you sneak through.

POST 24Original post

I just installed FVD brombacher exhaust: 996 sport catalytic set (200 cell), muffler sport quiet version, I am moving to CA in a month. This exhaust won't pass CA emissions?

POST 25Original post

I went to this exhaust because my stock CAT was rattling and failing. Since it was failing, I read on some forums that it would therefore be acceptable to have 200 cell cats. Any idea if this is true?

POST 26Original post

Unfortunately, as far as CARB is concerned, it doesn't matter at all whether the upgraded cats are good or not. The sniffer test is secondary to whether you have OEM or approved-aftermarket cats in the car. It's a horribly corrupt organization full of morons *at best*. While you're still out-of-state, I advise getting the cat elements in your OEM tubes replaced, on the off-chance you need to go to a STAR station after you move. That way you can swap cats and you'll pass visual.

POST 27Original post

I've had the NPP 200 cell cats on my car for more than 2 years/25K miles and they've been great. I have the crossover pipes, but they also sell an x-pipe. I bought through Maxspeed Motorsports. Originally installed them with stock muffler cans and it added enough sound that I could finally hear the exhaust. Now I have Fister/PSE modded cans and it is perfect. No drone, just great sounds with the windows up (how is should have sounded in the first place). Sounds really aggressive with the windows down. I don't have any external video, but I do have gopro footage from inside the car with the windows down at autoX last weekend. It will give you a sense of the sound type, that said it sounds so much better and complex in person. I may also have old footage with a bumper mic of the stock cans + 200 cells. LMK and I can post a link to either one.

POST 30Original post

TopGearUK. Funny name, solid stuff. I have their headers and x-pipe with high flow cats on my 4S Best bang for the buck

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 14351278

Sure thing. Gopros do a very poor job at picking up lower frequencies and volume differences IMHO. So in person you will hear a lot more the bass/growl. The gopro position is also biased to pick up intake noise vs what your ear hears from the open window. Clip 1 is the NHP 200 cells and stock exhaust from this winter. You can defn hear the improvement from the cats at low speed/takeoff. However once you really get going the main thing I would hear is intake howl (I have the intake resonator bypassed). Intake is 100% what you're hearing at the 2-3 upshift at the very end. Sounds nice, but it's pretty quiet and you only get a nice loud resonance at certain RPM. Clip 2 is the 200 cells with Fister modded cans. Hard to tell in video, but it is significantly louder. It's loud enough to almost down out intake sounds entirely. Unfortunately this course didn't get to 3rd gear for apples to apples, but you can get the idea. (ignore me almost clumsily spinning the car after getting annoyed I threw the run away) If you were local I'd gladly give you a ride in person so you could get a better idea. You Tube You Tube

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Nice vids! thank you. Looks like you had a blast at the autocross! nice sounds. Like I said, I somehow think stock air cooled cars just don't sound very aggressive and not sure why a lot of people think so. i agree with other poster that it's all about how you tastefully modify the cars.
