Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've got a 2002 996 and the headlights don't work. I replaced the lamps, thinking that was the problem. Neither high nor low beam works, but the flasher does. It's only got 5v at the plug block in the headlight well, which is probably not enough to ignite the HID lamps. It's also got only 5v at he fuse box. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? What voltage should I have?

POST 2Original post

Most report a bad headlight switch, I'd start there. Remove it and clean it with electrical cleaner if your lights start working replace it with a new one.

POST 3Original post

What Dan said is right. It is the common element for both headlights not working.

POST 4Original post

I can attest to that. I removed my pristine looking headlight switch, squirted in electrical cleaner, worked the switch a lot, reinstalled it and voila. Both headlights have worked perfectly ever since. Trick was not to let the appearance of the switch fool you into thinking the inside contacts were clean. Good luck!
