Haven't installed yet, but still decided to use his harness and splice it to use buttons on the side of the climate control because I wanted to fill the blank spaces instead of add another stalk.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've done some research and found a few resources, but I'd like to know if anyone has first hand account with accessing the OBC in early models that don't have the extra stalk? How hard would it be to wire to two of the unused buttons next to the climate control panel? Can a Porsche dealership tap in and grant access or do I need a durametric? Just curious as I've seen a handful of posts with the info center and like having that little extra bit of info like in my BMW. Thanks in advance. Will

POST 2Original post

There are a lot of threads on this. For me, I just bought a four switch assembly off ebay, bought the wiring harness from a guy who makes them, and retrofitted it. I had the Porsche dealership re-code it, this is before I had the Durametric, but the Durametric can recode, so no need to bring it to a dealer. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...stallation.htm You'd have to search for the guy who sells the harness. However, a lot of people have done what you stated, just put some switches on the dash.

Awesome, thank you for the quick reply. If you go with the toggle switch route, does the steering wheel still need to be removed to get the cluster out?

POST 4Original post

I've had my cluster out a few times, no, you don't need to remove the steering wheel as I recall.

As stated, buy the wire harness from the guy who sells them, Dwight Pilkilton. He can be emailed at [email removed] . I paid $48. He makes then to OEM spec., quality workmanship all around. Buy a stand alone OBC stalk or a 4-stalk column and remove the OBC stalk from that one. 2 screws hold it on. Ebay is your friend here. I paid $120. Remove the instrument cluster, very easy with tech article showing how. Remove steering column collar. Six screws and the collar comes off in jigsaw puzzle like pieces, some plastic pieces and some rubber pieces. No need to remove steering wheel. Screw on the OBC stalk and connect the wire harness to it. Run the wire harness up to the cluster where it plugs in to a plug there. Test to see if working, then reassemble. I did this on my 996. I was completely ignorant of how to do it. In fact, I didn't even know there was a OBC. But reading here I discovered it, and gathered the parts. Once I had the online tech articles and parts in hand, the job took me maybe 2 hours. Now that I've done it, I could do it in 30 minutes. I have all the tech articles with pictures if you need them. There is also 2 problems you will run into that I could help you with before hand. PM me and I can help.

Has anyone contacted Dwight recently? I tried the email address, but it came back undelivered.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I purchased the harness from him a while ago, I ended up contacting him on a Boxster forum. His present email is [email removed] and is still making this harness. Very nice build quality and kept me informed when I purchased. Haven't installed yet, but still decided to use his harness and splice it to use buttons on the side of the climate control because I wanted to fill the blank spaces instead of add another stalk.

POST 9Original post

I enabled my OBC manually with a durametric, removed the cluster (without removing the steering wheel), and wired a dashboard switch to toggle the OBC menus. I built my own wiring harness. It wasn't too complex and was easy to install by using the VW connector (VW part #000.979.010). It works fine. I have a '99 C2.
