I use A Blue Tooth remote reader for all of my cars - no limit on the number of cars I can use it upon where as my Durametric cable limits me to 3 VINS.

I actually have a RossTech cable from an old Audi that does this, really nice for checking / clearing codes on my other cars.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone use their Durametric with non-Porsche cars - i.e. will it function as a "generic" OBD-II to USB interface, and if so, what software do you use?

POST 2Original post

Never tried the Durametric on anything else, so I can't answer your question. I got a OBDII generic reader at Autozone for like $60 and use it to clear codes on the Porsche (I use it on the run when my stupid SAI code pops up), Mini Cooper (my wife can't get the gas cap on tight) and my two sons Ford Ranger and Honda's.

POST 3Original post

I would be very surprised if you could but why risk damaging the car's computer and/or the cable when the generic obdii readers are so cheap.

POST 4Original post

Just one less thing to buy and have around. Anyone else have experience trying this? I actually have a RossTech cable from an old Audi that does this, really nice for checking / clearing codes on my other cars. Would like to sell it and replace with the Durametric, but don't want to loose that capability. Can anyone else confirm if the Durametric will work on standard OBDII? Also, with the Enthusiast kit, if it does work to OBDII cars count toward your 3 vins?

POST 5Original post

I would contact Durametric to verify but I'm pretty sure it's pcar only.

POST 6Original post

FAQ section on the Durametric site says it only works on Porsche. I've been checking out various higher-end readers and nothing is crystal clear. The Autex MaxDiag 702 is supposed to work on the 996 and many other European cars. A search of the support forums shows a couple of people asking for help because most of the functions aren't working on their 996s. Those questions have gone unanswered for months. I sent email to their support group and was told I would have an answer withing 24 hours. That was two weeks ago. I thought this would be a good choice because it would also be able to clear the airbag code on my Volkswagen. Unresponsive support is a major show-stopper for me. So I'll most likely be getting the Durametric. There is also one by iCarsoft that looked very promising until support confirmed that it only works on 996 Turbos, GT2, and GT3.

POST 8Original post

Just get one of the generic readers on eBay or Amazon You can find themn under $15 Just be aware that if you are using an iPhone or iPad get a WiFi version as the low cost bluetooth ones will not work with iOS

POST 9Original post

The Veepeak wifi unit works great with OBD Fusion on OS.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a pile of wi-fi and bluetooth OBD readers as well as a wired OBD-II unit and the durametric. I am simply curious if the Durametric cable can be used with any other software or if it's Porsche-specific.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 13640119

Porsche specific on the software as the list of specific P car's come up and you have to select which model. The cable has a chip in it that restricts you to 3 vin's on the enthusiast ver and open ended number of vin's on the Pro vers. I got an error code on the laptop when I tried it on the CTS.

POST 12Original post

Schnell, the Durametric cable speaks KWP2000 and it's been programmed to only talk to a Porsche so it won't work as a generic OBDII cable for other cars. Do let us know if you find otherwise

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was convinced with your post on 7/17 - just updating it since this turned into an OBD-II advicefest. I'd lock the thread, but...

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 13640654

ok, since this is now an OBD-II advice thread... My '99 speak ISO 9141-2. At least on the K-Line. Is the KWP2000 for the newer models?

Our 996 is bilingual. Durametric is not.
