There's always a possibility that your car's PO installed an aftermarket LSD.
Leading evidence: 'Install aftermarket lsd' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check racing forum' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The paint, which appears original, is way too nice on the front to have been used for track events.

I don't have all of the history on the car, it only has 20000 miles on it but there are anchor points for a 5/6 point harness so it's been used for track or autocross.

I suspect if it was used competitively it was used for autocross.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok so tell me if I am missing something here
I have my 996 up on my lift working on various maintenance items and I happened to spin one of the rear wheels and noticed the other side was turning with it. Then I had my wife hold one side while I tried to turn the other and even with as much force as we could apply by hand they wheels will not turn independently of each other...they will only move together in the same direction.
Does this indicate someone installed a limited slip diff at some point? (I don't have a full history on the car) Or is there something in the differential design on this car that I am not familiar with?
I do have the original window sticker on the car and it definitely does
not
have a limited-slip diff option on it. I don't have all of the history on the car, it only has 20000 miles on it but there are anchor points for a 5/6 point harness so it's been used for track or autocross. So I wonder if a previous owner had an LSD installed in the car.
Put 'er on a lift & find out. Quaife makes them I think. Check the racing forum for LSD options maybe? Line up part # or manufacturer & design with compatible units.
How can I tell without disassembling the transmission aside from the wheels turning together? I do have the transmission oil drained right now and the car sitting on my lift.
If your car is a 99 and has a TC button on the dash then it has a factory LSD. If it's a 2000 or newer 996 then someone installed an aftermarket LSD in it.
Car is a 2003. Yes it appears someone did install one. I am wondering if I can get my borescope into the drain plug hole and see anything inside, maybe be balt to see what type of LSD is in there if I am lucky. Hopefully it's a good one (gear type vs. clutch plate type).
Unfortunately I don't have any records on the car from new in 2003 until about 2009, then spotty records from 2009-2015.
I do have a Carfax report that has about 30 service listings for various things but the descriptions are vague. There is one very early on in 2003 that says "transmission service" but who knows what that was. Based on the Carfax I am the 4th or 5th owner of the car. Despite that the car is in beautiful condition and clearly has had an easy 20K mile life. I suspect if it was used competitively it was used for autocross. The paint, which appears original, is way too nice on the front to have been used for track events. Having owned a track car myself in the past I know how much the front of your car gets sandblasted on the track.
The stock factory clutch plate type is a bit weak but an upgraded one like guard makes is actually better than a torque sensing geared diff because you get decceration benefits and not just forward grip .
But geared diffs are way cheaper
You can pull the cover off and even pull the diff out ( you don't need to to identify the diff) without dropping the transmission
Not really , it doesn't give you deceleration grip , it just preloads during deceleration so when you come back on the power there is no lag .

If you're going to use a geared diff , wavetrac is an excellent one , but it's not going to replicate a good plated diff .
Thanks. I was not able to see anything in there w/ my borescope. Unfortunately above the drainplug is a metal casting channel and there is not open access to the diff. Bummer.
I am trying to decide if I want to go to the trouble of pulling the left half shaft and left side differential cover to have a look-see. Part of me wants to know what's in there and part of me says "hey it's got a working LSD, who cares what it is just drive it until it breaks". Right now I am leaning towards the latter.
This should be easy to do...Find a stretch of traffic free road that has some grass or gravel and pull 1/2 way off and try to spin the tires. Or you could just try and do a donut in a parking lot and look at the tire marks.
That would work too but I already confirmed in my garage on the lift...two breaker bars on each hub with two people turning in opposite directions. Definitely has an LSD in it.
