Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey gang. Had an engine failure in my just recently purchased 1999 996 3.4 Tiptronic convertible. The car had 145k miles. Not sure what is wrong, but it doesn't matter. Loud metal impacting metal noises upon trying to crank. I knew it was a risk, but such is life. The rest of the car is a 9 outta 10 What does it take to put a Boxster engine in my 996? Those engines are cheaper. Which engines can I just "drop in"? I don't care about the drop in HP. This car is meant to be my DD, to save my beautiful 2002 996.2 convertible 6 speed. BTW, I have done an engine/trans swap in another 996.2, so I have an idea of the process.

00-02 3.2 litre engine will be the best. Put the 2 engines side by side & it will be obvious what simple changes will need to be done before installing the "new" engine.

Will the computer in the '99 take the 3.2 engine ok, without throwing a CEL? What year engines will drop straight in? Thanks!

POST 4Original post

00-02 is fine. Will need to use your throttle body. From everything I've read, the 3.4 tune should be ok with the 3.2 engine.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Why "my" throttle body? Aren't they both controlled by cable? Aren't they the same throttle body?

You are not the first to want to do this. There have been as I recall one or two other threads on this subject. Here's a link to one such thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...n-a-996-a.html Not a long thread but maybe you'll derive something of value from it.

No 2000 & newer are drive-by-wire. most people prefer the cable T/B

POST 8Original post

1997-99 cable throttle 2.5 is 205 hp and compatible . I believe the engine mount will be different
