Suggestion

There is nothing wrong with the LNE but every time I went anywhere that had anything to do with p-cars first thing I would hear is "you need to change your IMSB." My personal thought is that if you have a dual row and it hasn't failed by 50k miles it is less likely to fail than the possibility of a botched LNE install.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Longtime lurker, recent member, new owner (finally!) A few weeks ago, I picked up a 99 Carrera 4. Ocean Blue, Gray full leather, super clean, with 53.5k on the odo. Totally stock other than exhaust, which was replaced but no idea what it is. So far, I love it. It's replacing an E46 3-series that was a hand-me-down from my father and is now my brother's first car. Big changes include engine placement (rear), trunk placement (front), and passenger placement (outside). In all seriousness though, it's a huge difference from the E46. This is the first manual car I've owned (though not the first manual car I've driven), so things like big hills in San Francisco are still, let's say, intimidating (Challenging? Painful? All of the above?) This is not the easiest city to get used to driving in. The constant traffic sucks too. A few minor issues: SAI makes some noise on cold starts, the spoiler squeaks when it's retracting, and there are some other small rattling bits in the interior. Temperamental sunroof buttons, too. Also, this is a little odd, but I can't seem to find the cupholders. Or anywhere to put my phone. Any advice would be appreciated. First thing on my list is actually the IMSB retrofit. I wasn't really planning to do it so soon, but I read the cam deviations out with a friend's Durametric and found them to be slightly out of spec (6.4deg). I'm starting to doubt the thoroughness of my PPI, but I think it's also just paranoia setting in now that I'm financially invested. Surprisingly, it's a lot harder to be rational about this when the alternate is a 5-figure repair/replacement. So I'll just get it out of the way and stop thinking about it. I'll end up doing engine mounts eventually, I was thinking about semi-solid mounts (RSS or Rennline?) instead of the OEM ones, but we'll see. Also on the agenda is replacing the CR-220 with a CarPlay-capable head unit, potentially with a cubby hole for putting my phone in. My current audio solution is a cassette to 3.5mm adapter left over from the mid-90s. It's, uhhh, not ideal. But I think my main goal is just to have fun getting to know the car, learning to drive it well, and chasing down the minor issues on my own as they come up.

POST 3Original post

Congrats VivG, you have a very nice looking Pcar! Maybe think about updating the clutch helper spring to the lighter one, it should help you find the clutch bite better in hilly SF (If it hasn't been done already). Have fun.

POST 4Original post

Congrats. Nice color combo. There is a whole thread on where to put your phone. No cupholders. I had the factory ones that go on the vents. Better than nothing. For the hills and the clutch - use the e-brake. Takes all the stress out of stating uphill.

POST 5Original post

Nice! Ocean Blue Metallic is an amazing color - looks a little dark/plain in a overcast sky, but when the sun comes out or you get it under street lights, good things happen. Good luck with it !

POST 6Original post

Congrats! You do have a double row IMS bearing.....and the cam deviations are just outside of spec, I believe this points to the plastic piece for the cam chain tensioner wearing away, mine are higher, around 7.5 degrees, I believe the check engine light comes on at 12 degrees? I'm trending mine over time and will drop the engine sometime in the next 1-2 years to replace the pads and get it back into spec, but I slept good last night!

POST 7Original post

My cam settings are almost identical to yours, and I'm not too worried. The good is you have a double row IMSB, the bad is with that low mileage, it's a candidate for insufficient oil change or oil degradation. A new IMSB will make it more fun and less worry. I'm also going to move some of my stuff around in the center console to free up space for a phone holder. Cupholders are missing from the mk1 cars. There's a couple of options, best to use search for that in the 996 group. I chose a very nice product which mounts near the center floor just under your right knee. It sounds awkward but in use it's quite nice.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah I was joking about the cupholders and the phone thing was a direct reference to that thread (which I found hilarious). I was thinking about going the ultimate cupholders route (the one on the floor), all of the OEM cupholder options seemed less than ideal. Given the lower mileage, I think I just didn't want to risk the IMS. Worth the two grand to sleep easier at night.

POST 9Original post

Welcome. Beautiful car. My first 996 was a 99 C2 in Ocean Blue with Gray. Loved the colors. My current 996 is a 2001 C4 in Black Pearl and Savanna. Not bad either but that Ocean Blue is really special in my opinion. I can tell you one thing. My 2001 has the in-dash cup-holders (the two pop out drawers). They are useless except if you are sitting at a drive-in. The only time I use a cup-holder is to transport fast food and they are way to unstable. I end up keeping my right hand on the drinks between shifts. I'd definitely go the ultimate cup-holder route in fact I am seriously considering removing the factory units and moving the climate control up where it belongs. As for the IMSB, I know it is controversial but I will say this. My 2001 has an LNE bearing and my 99 had the dual-row original. I slept better with the original than I do with the LNE. Dual rows have something like 1% failure rate and many cars have gone far beyond 100k, even 200k with the original. Failures happen but they can happen on either bearing. Now, if it was a single row...

I love how much Ocean Blue changes depending on the light, it has so much depth to it. A great car to have as San Francisco gets warmer (supposed to hit 80F tomorrow!) This sounds really interesting, I'll have to look into it. I've seen the thread about removing the spring assembly entirely ( https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...matically.html ) but I'm pretty sure that a stiffer clutch pedal is not what I want. Maybe I'll try swapping out the stock spring for a higher spring rate or something.

The big pieces were fine, and the rubber lips I think are there, this piece just isn't attached correctly anymore. I resisted the temptation to just rip it off, but I need to figure out where the front part attaches to (wasn't immediately obvious last night in my garage). But yeah at least it's not expensive, I think that's like a $19 part.

Couldn't resist, saw an Ocean Blue console on eBay and decided to scrap any and all other upgrade plans until after I got it. Should arrive in a couple of Mondays. POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, I got back from dinner and GoT to find that some moron parked with their tow hitch literally attached to my front bumper, then got out and left. ??? There was so much empty space in front of the van, too, at least 10 yards. Ugh. Thankfully, other than the bent license plate and a minor dent in the bumper right above it, there's no damage. No obvious paint scratching, even, so I might not even bother with insurance. But still annoying.

POST 23Original post

That moron's insurance would be repairing and repainting my front bumper!

POST 24Original post

Yeap. Just a repaint is going to be $500 at least and you'll need a new skin too which runs about $500 too if i remember correctly.

POST 26Original post

That would've been automatic slashed tire on all four corners around here...

POST 27Original post

report it to your insurance as a hit and run - they will pay for the repair - did you write down the license plate - it's almost legible in photo

POST 28Original post

Yep, in my opinion, he just paid for you to have a bumper repaint! I would have called the Po Po to write up a report and then "baaam!!!" throw down some C O P action ((cue Bad Boyz song))... like tase him in the gonads, bend his arm backwards, cuff his wrists and ankles, and while hog-tied on the ground and knee on his back, start shouting ... "Don't resist, don't resist... STOP resisting or I'll tase you again!"

POST 29Original post

I think the nearly-legible plate is OP's plate being reflected by the truck bumper. OP, this sucks - sorry. On the plus side, the first ding is now out of the way, so you can move forward being less anxious about when it's going to happen. Some heat - like direct sun on a hot day or a hairdryer on low heat - might help any remaining dimple from the ball relax and return to the correct shape. Since the plate looks to have borne the brunt of the contact, time to lose it and head to bumperplugs.com to get a color-matched set of plugs for that bumper.

POST 30Original post

Unfortunately what you're likely to hear is "it wasn't me backing up, but the Porsche pulled too far forward"...unless there's more corroboration (like witnesses) I think you're out of luck getting the van driver to pay.

POST 31Original post

Not the case - My mercedes was hit by truck's trailer hitch backing up into my front bumper - Truck was gone when I got to my car - Allstate covered it as hit and run

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 13229584

Is it just me, or...

POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13229698

I got all the pictures and the plate and stuff, but yeah - this is a city driven 911 that's coming up on 20 years old, this isn't the first ding and won't be the last. The damage is so minor that I really don't think it's worth paying the deductible to get it fixed. The whole point was to not have to worry as much about these kinds of things, it's impossible to avoid in the city. That's an interesting thought regarding heat, it'd be nice if it worked out that way. I may give it a try. I was already thinking of going down the tow hook license plate road, I guess this will push me down that path. Thankfully the plate took the hit, if not I definitely would have needed a new bumper. Definitely dodged a bullet there. Just need to double check that it didn't dislodge the bumper or compromise the integrity, but I don't recall seeing anything along those lines last night. The most plausible theory I've heard so far is that it somehow rolled back a few inches after the person parked it. Heavy van parked on an uphill incline, maybe they didn't put the parking brake on - seemed like a relatively logical sequence of events (as opposed to someone just deciding to back into a Porsche). I have witnesses and stuff, so it shouldn't be a problem to prove that I am not at fault. I talked to the police, they said to evaluate the damage and then decide whether to report it (as a hit and run). I may still do that, at least to get a report on file.

POST 34 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, I bought a used Cayman S shift assembly from a dismantler on Ebay. Not a bad deal, came with an okay condition boot/**** and 987 shift cables (useless but I guess I can resell them). It showed up today, turns out it's a B&M short shifter and not the OEM 997 shift linkage. Blah. Shoulda just ordered a new one from Suncoast. Anyone looking for a B&M SSK?

POST 36 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah that's the next step, I was going to get legit membership when I got home and then post it. I keep delaying my interior upgrade until I have the right parts for the shifter. Shockingly difficult to find a grey leather shift ****, and trying to bargain hunt the shift console is turning into more hassle than it's worth. Oh well, lessons learned.

Holiday weekend update: took the car offroading, on an unpaved dirt road/driveway leading to a friend's house in the woods. Didn't scrape as much of the bottom as I thought I would, but did some leave a little bit of paint behind (thanks, tree branches!) I'm falling down the mod rabbit hole now, officially - the following are now on their way: - OEM 997 shift console (lightly used) - Function First Shift-Right shifter ball bearing retrofit kit - F1st Orange (soft) transmission mount insert - F1st aluminum shift **** Also coming soon: a lighter clutch helper spring, aux jack for CDR-220, and the upper storage bin to replace the cassette holders. This is going to be entertaining.

I'm still looking for an upper storage bin and a gray shift boot, I'm going to end up changing like a dozen parts in one go: - Add aux jack - Replace tape storage with a bin - 997 shift console with the F1st metal ball bearings - F1st shift **** and boot - Change the center console to a painted one - Replace the parking brake handle to a less worn one

POST 46 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The airbag spring in my steering wheel collapsed last week, so the horn was constantly going off. Oops. I took it as an opportunity to update to a 3 spoke wheel, which turned out quite nicely. I like the feel a lot more than the old 4-spoke, well worth the upgrade. I also installed an aux jack, but I'm still attempting to hunt down the radio code, so I won't know if that actually works until I get the head unit unlocked.

Yeah, it's way nicer for sure. I know some people on the board are devoted to the 4-spoke wheel design, but I vastly prefer this one. As much as this car isn't my ideal configuration of 996 to start with (I think a yellow Targa or C4S is probably the ultimate), I predict that I'll get this one set up exactly the way I like and then not be interested in changing it. We'll see.

Spent Saturday chasing a pair of Boxsters around the hills, lot of fun. Those things are fast AF in the technical sectors, the 996 is much happier on the sweeping stuff where it can really put the power down. New set of wheels (bought from RL member GVA-SFO), new set of MPSS (Costco, so much more grip than I had before): Also got another new set of wheels (that came with a whole car attached!):
