I bought my 2003 C2 with the turbo/C4 front cover installed on it.

Would you guys recommend me having them switch those out?

Replace aftermarket oil filter with new OEM oil filter and change oil

One of the first upgrades I did to my Targa was to replace the sunshade with one with tighter weave that reduces amount of light (and heat!) that makes its way in to the cabin.

Suggestion
High quality aftermarket parts (I'm currently running Sebro rotors and Textar pads, but there are lots of choices at different price points) are available for a reasonable price.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello Renlisters......
Ive been reading and researching on the forums for a while now but was hesitant to join without actually owning a Porsche.
Today I purchased a 2004 911 Targa with just under 80k miles on it. My father in law is a proud owner of a 1985 Targa and swears by Porsche.
I had the vehicle inspected by a highly rated German auto shop and there were no surprises but the vehicle has a few smaller issues that I will need to address in the near future.
1. Small AC coolant leak
2. Driver side window isnt positioned correctly and tilts towards the rear of the vehicle. When the door is closed the window hits the left rear passenger window. Based on my research on this forum it sounds like that could be a regulator or broken bracket/wire.
3. The mesh veil on the drivers side that hides the inner workings of the retractable roof is broken and detached, showing the internals.
4. The emergency brake plastic housing is cracked.
5. A few smaller dents and digs that will drive me nuts before I get them fixed.
6. Front brakes are near the wear bar, rear brakes are at 40% - the shop I had do the inspection said it would cost around $1,500 for a full brake job on the vehicle. Is that an accurate number? Seems steep but like I said, Ive never owned a Porsche before.
Thanks for reading and sharing info with us newbies. If you own a 996 Targa Id love to chat with you as info on the retractable roof hard to come by on this forum.
Ya that price sounds excessive but I didnt know If Porsche has some super special breaks or something. Would you guys trust a non-exotic or German specific shop to do the job?
Lots of enthusiasts do their own brakes. There is nothing special about Porsche (Brembo) brakes. High quality aftermarket parts (I'm currently running Sebro rotors and Textar pads, but there are lots of choices at different price points) are available for a reasonable price. Jason at Rennlist sponsor Warehouse 33 often has good deals and offers and additional Rennlist discount. If you know exactly what you are looking for eBay can be a good low cost option. I'd think any independent that does German cars could do these brakes in their sleep (but I do my own work, so I can't say so based on direct experience).
Welcome! I have a 996 and once had an 88 Targa. Porsche makes a wonderful car, but yes, expensive:

The brake job price sounds fine if it includes all components such as rotors, pads, sensors. Price depends on location, too, as some places in expensive areas would be $3000 and others only $800 using the cheapest parts. Where I live near Chicago, mechanics charge $100-$160/hr
If the rotors are in decent shape save yourself a ton of cash and do the pads yourself - the 996 pads are the easiest to change of any car I've ever had (there's nothing difficult about doing the rotors either - just a little more involved). Good luck with the car - they are great to drive!
Beautiful car, good luck! I dont see many Targas around me.
Havent done brakes yet but a bunch of odds and ends, and I dont think they are that bad to work on if you enjoy it (I'm just a shadetree). Tons of knowledge here and elsewhere to get you through most any project.
Great looking Targa! I see that youre in Nevada....so lots of sun. One of the first upgrades I did to my Targa was to replace the sunshade with one with tighter weave that reduces amount of light (and heat!) that makes its way in to the cabin. You can find on Suncoast and is a direct drop in for original.

Enjoy the new ride!
I've read where many people have swapped out the front stock bumper with a Turbo front bumper. Should fit with no problem. The turbo rear deck lid is another story. It won't fit without some serious modifications. You could always put the aero rear wing. Personally, I wouldn't change a thing about the Targa. It's a unique car and I wouldn't want to divert for the stock look too much. But that's just my tastes. It's your car, do what you want.
Thanks for all the input guys. Im going to do the brakes first, hopefully I can just pay slap them this go around. Im also going to limo tint the top to keep the cooler. After that I have some small dents and scratches that Ill need to address as I save more play money.
So Im dropping off the Porsche with the Indy mechanic next week and he will address the following items;
1. New brake pads, hardware, sensors
2. Tighten E-brake cable
3. New air filters (engine/cabin)
4. Address AC coolant leak
5. Replace aftermarket oil filter with new OEM oil filter and change oil
I purchased all of the parts from EBS racing as they came highly recommended. The sales person at EBS also told me that I may want to replace the spark plugs as the vehicle is at 80k miles. Would you guys recommend me having them switch those out? There are no issues at this point but I dont want to pay a mechanic a steep hourly rate if its a non issue.
Plugs are fairly inexpensive, and just because the look ok doesn't mean they do not need replacement. Example, my jet ski wouldn't go over 40mph and about 5000 rpm, I pulled the plugs and they looked perfect. I decided to replace them anyway as it was only 4 plugs at 3 bucks each and boom, back to 55mph and 8000 rpm.
I know you do not have any issues but point being an inspection doesn't always show the issue, and if you are going to pay for the time to take them out, why put old back in. You are only talking another lets say $100 in plugs. The labor is being done either way.
Just my 2 cents
Another question! Theres a guy near me that is selling 17 inch 993 wheels. I believe that they are 8 inch width. I noticed my fronts are 8s and I think my rears are 10s. Does that mean Id need some sort of spacer for the rears if I chose to purchase them? Ill upload the photos as soon as my ****ty cell phone service allows me to.
I have an '01 so this might not apply, but when I got mine the radiators hadn't been cleaned in a long time & there was a ton of stuff blocking them up. I had to remove the front bumper. (not too hard)
