Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What lasts longer, applies easiest? Wipe new, back to black, plastic paint, wire brush, propane torch techniques?

POST 2Original post

Hi! I use Meguiar's ultimate black restorer and I must admit Im really impressed. I did few parts: the air box in engine bay (No problem with the heat and nothing seems to stick to it now) and after some exterior parts like black trims around the mirrors and they came back as new. So I use it pretty much everywhere around the car for 2 years now and no problem so far!

POST 3Original post

I've used the Mothers product and it seems to fade again within a month.

POST 4Original post

I restored with Meg Back to Black (I think that’s the name) and maintain with 303. The 303 lasts really well.

POST 6Original post

I use the 303 wipes every month or two on my Cayenne metal trim pieces, every 2-3 months on the 996 plastics to keep pristine.

POST 8Original post

Depends on how bad it is. Solution Finish if its totally destroyed, Cquartz Dlux or even regular Cquartz have given me good results.

POST 9Original post

Another vote for wipe new. Lasts me a full season of driving (7 months).

POST 11Original post

I've been using Meguire's Back to Black for a couple years (a little goes a long way - and I'm pretty liberal with it). Unfortunately it doesn't last very long. I've got to do it at least 3 or times a season if I wan't the trim to stay looking good. I'd like to find something that lasts a little longer (1 application per season would be great). I'd also like to find an applicator that can do the thin trim lines without getting all over the paint work...

POST 12Original post

I think this ended up needing two coats, so if your trim looks like that you will need something more substantial they a plastic/tire dressing. Additionally if you want something that actually lasts more than a few weeks I would recommend you guys try an actual plastic coating. Should last 6-12 months. Edit* Can't post links I guess. But that picture is some trim on an X5, that is regular Cquartz.

This is what I use (and I've tried them all). By far the best out there without going to something that is $60+.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15990207

How long between applications? Have you compared with Wipe new?

POST 15Original post

Okay, I haven't them ALL yet, as I haven't tried Wipe New. I haven't tried that one because a lot of the reviews I found for it sounded like it was no better than any of the other products I've tried. As for the Car Guys stuff, I like it because it's not greasy and so far seems to last a long time (through several washes and being out in the rain).

POST 16Original post

Os7213 says "I use Meguiar's ultimate black restorer and I must admit Im really impressed." I use same and I would also say it works, It might take a couple of applications to get black color your after, but once it does, it seems to last. caveat : Cowl trim in great shape other than lighter grey in color when I started. I use it there and any other black trim on car, including engine compartment and window/door/wheel trim pieces

POST 17Original post

When applying I use a foam .5 inch paint brush. About .99 at Lowes.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you for the clarification, still a data point. Guys, let us know how many weeks/ months/ or times per year you are applying.

POST 19Original post

My application of Car Guys Plastic Restorer is going on three months. I don't expect something like this to last for more than a few months, what I do expect is for it to look good and not be greasy while it is "working". That is why I like CGPR so much more than anything else I have tried.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What about the guys who use heat guns on their cowls to restore color? Fact or fiction? How long does it work?

POST 21Original post

Never heard of that technique, sounds like it might work. Wipe New is a sticky resin that cures quickly. You need to work carefully with it, but durability and restoration appearance is very good. I'm a total sucker for those "as seen on TV" products. 99% suck and are total snake oil. Wipe New is one of the very few that works. The other good products are Flitz polish (a true miracle product), and Flex Seal. Also, I have a Ginzu knife that I have abused as a garden tool for over 30 years, and it's still sharp.

POST 23Original post

If it's really faded so that restorers don't work, or work only very briefly, there is a product called "Forever Black" that is a permanent dye to restore the color back to black. It's a bit of a "miracle product" in my experience because it goes on just like a plastic restorer. It doesn't have any "thickness" to it like paint, it's just a dye that seems to get absorbed into the plastic. You do have to be careful not to get it on paint because it is a dye, so masking is a good idea for anything that is adjacent to painted surfaces. Once it has been dyed, you can top it with whatever you want. This is the link -> Amazon Amazon

That works too, but you need a steady hand and a nice heat gun. There's definitely a technique to it, so you might want to practice on something else first.

POST 25Original post

I masked mine off and sprayed plastic-dip on it. It's been two months and about six or seven car washes and it still looks new. In fact I was happy enough to spray some of those other prone to fade spots as well.

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15992544

Have you done it? There are various threads on it. Some claim it's very effective. How long does it last?

POST 27Original post

I've done an initial attempt at it, but didn't trust myself to go further, but the area I tested seemed to work. I'm going to try it again soon on the orange seat belt buttons in my car, which are starting to get that white look to them.

Another vote for Wipe New. I used it last year, and my car stays in the sun outside, no garage all year. It is still shiny black, looking great.
