Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Should have been the first thing we checked but when does both headlights burn out.

I would check the wiring behind the switch for jumper wires.

Suggestion
I had a similar problem once but it was solved by replacing ignition switch....if you wiggle the key when car is running does the headlight get bright?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I pulled it and the drl's turned off but still no change in the light problem.
I just bought my 996. It was imported into Canada from the US years ago. They had to install DRL. I don't know if my switch is bad or if the DRL system isn't working properly. When I have the switch in the off position the driving lights are on like they should be. If I turn the switch to the headlights on position, the headlights are dim but my taillights are normal. If I pull out the switch for driving lights or fog lights, nothing happens. My brights work fine from the steering console. Is my switch bad?
Maybe I read this wrong but...DRL's are on no matter the switch position..got that. Light switch first position...parking lights are on. Light switch second position...headlights come on. The high beams are controlled by the steering stalk. Pull the switch outwards and the fog lights come on. Is this not what is happening?
When I leave it in the off position the drl's are on, with no tailights, working correctly. When I turn the switch one position to the right, I get dim headlights, side markers, and taillights. When I turn the switch to the right again, I get the same thing. If I pull out the switch once or twice, I get no fogs or driving lights. ideas?
Who wired up the DRL's? It seems like whoever did it wired up the DRL's by tapping into the headlight circuit. I would check the wiring behind the switch for jumper wires. There also is a specific relay that should be installed in the relay box for DRL circuit to work.
This is where it gets interesting. It was done by the Porsche dealer in Victoria 12 years ago. I wonder if the owner I bought it from even drove it at night. He had the install done way back then. Right now I have to drive it at night with the light switch on and the brights on.
I find the lights to be dim in general and use my high beams when needed. We have no street lights where I live and I don't really need to go out after dark so no biggy.
You're using the second detent for the headlight "on" setting, right? The switch (at least on a US-spec 996) has three rotary settings (off, parking lights, headlights). In the middle setting, the headlights are illuminated but dim.

I just referenced my maintenance notes... I have a 2002 Canadian targa. I think the dealer hacked your system. Here are my notes on the correct relay to check for....
Daytime running lights were not functioning. Replaced relay at 69,946 km. Solved issue. Replacement part: Wells Relay #20981. New relay had the same Porsche part number as the old one, same sticker, same manufacturer.
When the old relay was burnt out it operated just like a US car. I would think you can reverse whatever wiring was done and stick this relay in and try that.
it was only about $50 on Amazon
Thank you. When I talked to the dealer in Victoria, they told me about a big relay by the clutch. I pulled it and the drl's turned off but still no change in the light problem. Where does the relay go that you have?
Headlights started getting intermittent when turned on. But I have heard strange things happen when the light and ignition switch's start to fail.
Maybe take it out and use some contact cleaner on the switch and harness side.
I went to the boneyard and got a switch from a boxster. Its doing the exact same thing. There is a new ignition switch in the console. Maybe I should change it now?
Heres what the Porsche dealer did in Victoria. I want to remove it all. And redo it. I was reading it could be a grounding issue? Can anyone tell me if one click to the right turns the headlights on dim and two clicks turn them on normal?
This was in the frunk by the battery
Youre not gonna believe this. We took everything apart and found a garage door module. That wasnt the problem. We took out the headlights and both were burnt out. I mean wow. Should have been the first thing we checked but when does both headlights burn out.
My wifes work van did this. She never notuced that the one head light went out because the drl stays lit but when the other side went out she started to get visability issues. At first i couldnt figure out what was wrong because the headlights, i mean drl, were on. Eventually i changed one bulb then noticed how much brighter it was and then the light bulb went on in my head
