Assume you checked oil cold after sitting over night on a flat surface.

And, car feels smoother post "top off" not that it ran poor before.

I should check the dipstick but with a new job and an 11 month old, just no time

With an 11 month old, I'd tell my wife...Honey you'll need to change the diapers, I need to check my oil, and make sure she never discovers that it only takes you 30 sec!

I am NOT suggesting a freak out over scored bores, just pointing you towards a discussion and method recommended by an expert to measure and monitor our oil consumption.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Everyone,
New job, so my daily driver 996 c2 has been tasked with driving 35 each way often in stop and go traffic. Prior, i took the ferry to work and drove about 2 miles each way.
I had oil changed in early may, started job end of may. Just had to go to local porsche dealer to buy a few quarts and get a top off because i was low (appreciate that dealers will do that for free). Dashboard graphic showed me low but no dummy light.
I'd say ive driven 2800 miles since oil change. Is this normal usage?
Car runs and drives great otherwise.
Any insights are appreciated
How much did they add? I hate to ask this question...what type and weight of oil? What did the dipstick show before adding oil? The electronic gauge is not all that reliable. Assume you checked oil cold after sitting over night on a flat surface.
Porsche dealership added oil. Want to say 5w30 (assume mobil 1). I went off dashboard which shows oil level on start. Ive been watching the levels drop over the last few months till it started flashing, which is when i decided to go in.

😃 it takes about 30 seconds. First thing in am, pop the decklid, pull out stick and wipe off. Insert stick and pull out again. Observe level. Keep at midpoint of stick.
Variables contribute to oil consumption on these engines. Yours sounds fine. Develope a base line and monitor.
5w30? I thought Mobil 1 should be 0w40. I have switched to DT40 so don't remember.
Sure would have been nice to know how much they put in. Each mark on the elect gauge is only something like approx. 8oz. From full mark to low mark is only approx 1.6 qt according to the Bentley Book.
How can having the dealer top off oil for free be an expensive ownership experience? Ive a solid independent mechanic who does everything, the dealership just givese free top offs!
The owners manual says that oil consumption is normal, but I've never lost a drop in ten years of ownership. I use 5w40 and change it every 2500-3000 miles.
The quarts are for future use on as needed basis so i can fill as necessary. Remember, my original post was asking about normal oil usage rate, not asking people to criticize my budget allocation....
There is no "normal oil usage"... Every car is different. This being said, less than 1/2-1 qt. per 1000 - 1500 mi. could be acceptable. Some engines use more than others - "normal" depends on the engine. You'll figure out what's normal for your engine over time. If it starts smoking or suddenly starts using more than it did before, you can consider that a "red flag"...
Mr. Raby at F6I has a series of vids on bore scoring, if you did not know this. One of them (part 4 I think?) has a great discussion on oil usage and a detailed method of how to "baseline" and monitor usage moving forward.
I am NOT suggesting a freak out over scored bores, just pointing you towards a discussion and method recommended by an expert to measure and monitor our oil consumption. He does not recommend "topping off" as you will never accurately know how much you are consuming, which makes sense to me.
For what its worth, I started using this method about 1200 miles ago at the midway point of the guage. I am still a bar or two above the bottom safe line, which equates to just at or under the midway point on the stick on my car. I measure in the morning when the car is cold, and will record mileage and add exactly 1/2 quart when I reach the bottom safe line and monitor again.
Mine is (mostly) daily driven, not quite as hard as yours.

Had ims/rms done. No leaks visible in garage or work parking. Dont know how much was added; should have asked and was on a call so didnt.
As a note, dash meter went from last cell (flashing) to just below top line. Whatever that means for quarts added...
And, car feels smoother post "top off" not that it ran poor before. Ive just limited mileage even as a daily driver because i took the ferry. Now that i drive 70 miles a day, im sure its characteristics are changing
