Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2002 996 and My mechanic wants to change the IMS do to a crankshaft code error, there's no noise or any other sign of failure other than a misfire I took it to have the oil pressure sensor change and to see if the crankshaft sensor need it to be replace since it will pop occasionally, please I need advice.

POST 2Original post

When you say "change the IMS", does that mean your mechanic wants to replace the entire shaft, or the IMSB=bearing? Why would your mechanic want to do that when you took it in to replace the oil pressure sensor and check on a misfire, and possibly see if you need a new crankshaft sensor? What CEL codes are you seeing? What leads you to think a crankshaft sensor needs to be replaced? You need a new mechanic and a second opinion. You need a better understanding of what your present mechanic is suggesting. Get your car out of there before moving forward.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

He want's to change the IMS bearing, I took it since the engine light turned on and the car had a small misfire and also I had a low oil beeping last week that really scare me but find out it is something that 996 will have eventually, then he said this are early signs of the IMS bearing failure

POST 4Original post

Get yourself a new technician, neither are signs of IMS failure.

POST 5Original post

Really, you are hopelessly in over your head. So the car has a misfire (get the code or go to Autozone and have it read) and low oil pressure because possibly the oil sender unit is bad (common). Did you check the oil level to make sure? A check engine light due to a misfire is very common and could just be a result of moisture. You seriously need a different mechanic with 996 engine experience. This guy is giving you a line of BS.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you very much, he said not to move it or it cut be a disaster but there's no noise or grinding sound, He was a porsche mechanic and had done some small jobs on it but he knew how people tend to over react when the IMS bearing is mentioned and wants to charge me $ 1,500.00 I'm pretty sure he was going to spend $200 on the sensors and give and old bearing.

POST 7Original post

All I can say is there are so many concerns here. It is YOUR car, so you decide what to do. A failing IMSB does not cause a check engine light, but a misfire will. There is no way to determine if your IMSB is failing unless you pull it, and then a replacement bearing is necessary. Is your car auto or manual? Because if it is a manual, depending on mileage, there are a lot of other things to consider doing at the same time (clutch, etc.). I would have him address the misfire, replace the oil sending unit, and then YOU need to read up on the IMSB and determine if/when you are going to have it replaced. And if you decide on IMSB replacement, the best way to go is with the Solution. I doubt your mechanic is certified to install the Solution. Check out LN Engineering. https://lnengineering.com/

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is a manual and it shift perfect so is not in my mind to replaced it soon I will put a ceramic or a better one when that time comes. I'm getting the car out and I may even do the sensors my self. Thanks again.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Can someone give the phone number of a good mechanic on the Dallas area. Thanks.

POST 10Original post

I’ve heard good things about RAC Motorsports in Carrollton.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I took the risk and the advise of not changing the IMS bearing and to my super bad look the engine blow up and now I'm asking you all for help I need a new engine for my 2002 the core has a hold so I don't think it can be use. Any help will be much appreciated, the car is sitting on Fix n Go in Plano TX. Danny the owner is a great guy.

POST 12Original post

Go to Mayo! They are even certified for the IMS Solution. Which shop is telling you this info?

POST 13Original post

Uh oh... The engine blow up now...go boom! I smell a troll!

POST 14Original post

So you threw a rod and it put a hole in the block, and now it is unusable. Did you ever bother to check the oil level? Change the oil and have the filter inspected? Kind of pointless at this point in time....but it might have helped.

POST 15Original post

When I read this thread for the first time this morning it was pretty obvious that not all the information was posted, i.e. maybe the original mechanic found some serious cam deviations when troubleshooting. It sure seemed like more info was required to evaluate the initial mechanics diagnostics. Sorry to hear about your engine. You really need to post more information such as what happened, what is the damage so we can provide guidance.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15417345

I'm not a troll and I'm not looking to star any blaming. the car was sitting on a garage for 1 year and yes I did check the oil levels and yes the mechanic told me he was sure It need it a new IMS bearing and I took the risk. I was going 75 mph when the engine stop and smoke came out, when I was able to park oil and water was dripping all over the engine I call a towing truck and took it to Fix N Go in Plano Tx where Danny the owner show me the hold on the case. all I'm asking is if any one can please check on Craigslist or local mechanic, I need a long block or a complete engine.

I'd call some of the dismantlers - Quality Porsche Parts/Partssociety.com and Norspec Dismantling are two that I've had good luck with.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I try to get some history and it looked ok. I don't have pictures with me I need to go to the shop and will take some.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 15417525

Well IMS doesn't fail that quickly, IF that is what caused the failure. I doubt that's the cause though. It would be interesting to tear down that engine and diagnose what failed. Most likely whatever failed already had and it was way too late to prevent it.

POST 24Original post

Porsche has short blocks for around $6500-$7000. Would be a lot of work to transfer everything over. RND Engines...same thing. http://rndengines.com/ It is cars that sit for a year in a garage that blow up. Now the IMS bearing could have been on the way out for a long time and shredding metal particles that got circulated through the engine and caused one (or more) of the connecting rod bearings to seize, broke the connecting rod and blew a hole in the engine block. Not sure if pre-emptively replacing the bearing would have bought you any more time. Only a full PPI with oil analysis and filter check, dropping the oil pan and checking for debris would have at least helped...prior to bearing replacement....somewhat.

Dude! You are a glutton for punishment...Take a step back, take a few deep breaths and start reading everything you can about the M96 engine. The last thing you want to do is start dumping money into this thing without knowing exactly what you're getting into. A "used" engine is a total crap-shoot (it seems in some cases brand new M96's were a crap-shoot). Caveat Emptor!!!

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You are right but the other scenario is to expend $ 15,000.00 for a rebuild engine since my core is useless. I guess the third option is to sell it as it is and get nothing.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 15418056

A lot of things can go wrong with disassembly and assembly. If you are on a budget and need to get the car back on the road, I suggest getting a used engine from a reputable source (e.g,. partssociety). Best is a source others have used with good experience. Also best is to have info/pics of the scrapped car where the engine was extracted from. Of course with the disclaimer that you're rolling the dice again by doing that.

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15418114

I feel like I'm in a black hold I'm afraid some one will buy the engine and I get stock with nothing in the other hand I'm afraid to get the same bad experience again. have some one had a bad experience with a used replacement engine?

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 15418019

I always find this statement to be hyperbole. A used engine in good running condition with a known history is no more of a crap shoot than buying a used car. It is repeated often, but most people have never even tried a used engine. I have on several cars, including one of my 996's and it has always worked out just fine.

POST 36Original post

Quotes source post: 15419182

Just make sure the heads get a proper rebuild if you go that option.

POST 37 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So to my surprise I found that Porsche has the best price for a new with warranty short block , now I need to know how much it will cost to verified if the heads are in good shape.

POST 38Original post

Isn't the porsche short block not much more ?

POST 39Original post

Quotes source post: 15420431

Expect about $2Kish if my memory serves me correct for a proper test and rebuild of the heads.

POST 40Original post

Why not wait a little and save up for a FSI 3.8 motor. Do it once and do it right. By the time you get the short block, rebuild the heads and factor in the labor to put it together and install, how far are you from a JR engine cost wise? Not to mention if you go the short block route arent you essentially starting from square one with the same inherent M96 risks?

POST 41 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No more hyperbole than known history when the engine has been re-built... Why was it re-built? Was there a failure? How was it re-built, and by whom? What kind of parts were used? Etc... Theres really no way to know for sure without relying on what youre being told- that is the definition of a crapshoot! Im not saying it wont or cant work out well, its just that the guy has been burnt once and should step back and really weigh his options.

The mechanic has 20= years working on Porsche engines and states never seen this damage, he is taking the engine out today or tomorrow and will know more of the story, at this moment his best guess is a IMS replacement done incorrectly.

POST 49Original post

Wow that was fast. What motor did you end up going with?

POST 50Original post

Quotes source post: 15427084

Ouch. That's looks like the results of a chain break. Glad to see you're not throwing in the towel on the car. Looking forward to seeing it back on the road.

POST 51Original post

Quotes source post: 15451998

^^ Yup! ^^ Timing chain break wouldve my guess. Also makes sense if the timing was way out of whack and thats why it threw a CEL. The whole story still seems strange though... where was that short block, in the mechanics back room?

POST 52 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15452049

Im not using the same mechanic that diagnosed the IMS change when I took it when I bought it, some how I feel he did something or had something to do with the engine failure ( thats my conspiracy thinking) I took the advice from porche owners in Dallas area and one of them had a friend that was rebuilding a engine in Houston las year and the car got flooded and got totaled he was keeping the engine hopping to find a 2002+ roller and it never happened so I was a lucky winner and got it for $ 9,000.00 no core exchange.

No it was not the time chain coming loose it was a IMS change gone wrong or a very bad timing adjustment making one of the rods loose and this made two hols in the upper and lower case the IMS looked Brand new and it was in perfect conditions, making us guess someone just had work on it.

POST 62Original post
