The interesting thing about this car is that it was ordered with literally no options, although at some point a set of 18 sport technic wheels were installed along with a CD changer.
Leading evidence: 'Install along' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check on the aos as well' (1 discussions). This is great news - will be calling the indy that is doing the bearing and RMS to check on the AOS as well.

“The Solution” would be nice but realistically it will be a long time before I put another 75,000 miles on this car, so will just replace the bearing when I do a clutch again.

I sent it off to Flat6 Innovations to replace the chains and do some other work on it.

He has better quality replacement chains that he can replace w/o an engine teardown.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is my first post - long time lurker here. Just purchased a new (to me) 1999 cabrio, black over black. Very excited as this is my first Porsche - have had MBs, Audis, VWs and my daily driver is a BMW but no Porsches despite having wanted one for 40+ years.
Here are some details - 71,500 miles, very good condition but will require some heavy detailing to bring it up to my acceptable level. Very well maintained, but original IMS and clutch, so that is being done this week. The interesting thing about this car is that it was ordered with literally no options, although at some point a set of 18 sport technic wheels were installed along with a CD changer. So pretty basic 911, and a very early production car as well. Looking forward to getting it back and driving it!
Im sure that I will be asking many dumb questions to those in the know about these cars!

Congrats! I also have a black on black 99 cab. Its simple and reliable for me. I have about 60,000 miles on original everything except batteries and radio.
No problem sharing - paid $17,000 knowing that it needed IMS, RMS and clutch. Also doing the sway bar links while there. Did not expect to have to buy a set of tires but they were pretty well cracked, so will end up with about $21,000 total in the car. Will still need to do the driver's seat backrest - the stitches have separated - not sure what that will cost. So in to the car for a little more than I wanted but plan to keep it long term. Would have been happier to be under $20K all in, but it seems like a solid enough car.
Thank you! Will post some pictures when it gets out of the detail shop. Will have to take them quick - nothing like buying a black car in the middle of winter. Not that I plan to drive it in the snow, but the dust and dirt seem to collect this time of year...
Yes, doing the RMS for sure as it was leaking a little bit. First (of many) dumb questions - what is the AOS? Assuming a seal? Always good to know what else to do when it is apart.
Congrats! For your seat(s)

I haven't used them but I'n pretty sure someone here has (that's where I got the link)...
Sounds like you're making the ride steps. Curious, what bearing are you going to have installed? It's smart you're having the RMS replaced, while the mechanic has the tranny dropped, you should also change out the AOS too. Because of where it is located, it's not an easy DIY project. Enjoy that car!
This is great news - will be calling the indy that is doing the bearing and RMS to check on the AOS as well. Love hearing stuff like this that can save time and aggravation down the line - I'm a believer in doing as much as possible when things are apart.
Using the LN kit - seems to be the preferred choice, and my indy has done a couple dozen of them with good results. Looking forward to really enjoying this car - it's been a long time since I've had a truly "analog" sports car - last one was my 1987 MB 190E 2.3-16. The 996 reminds me a bit of that, but with a whole lot more performance. And in this case the ability to put the top down, although I'm not sure how often I will use that. Guess that depends on how much I like it with the hardtop on it. Was really looking for a coupe, but could not pass up a basically one-owner car that had been well cared for, despite sitting for the last couple of years. Hopefully catch-up on maintenance will bring it back...
Congrats! Welcome to the club. If you haven't already, check out your local PCA. I was surprised to find how much more fun Porsche ownership is as a result of joining the PCA.
That sounds like a plan. I don't have a ton of spare time, but years ago I was involved in the Datsun 240Z club locally, then later the MB club and enjoyed them both. Thank you for the suggestion!

Congrats! They are a barrel of fun!
If I had changed my cam chain at 72,000 miles, I'd still be driving my '02 cab. I'd add that to your "to do"list for sure.
I don't think it is a maintenance interval wear item. After reading this I got worried and did a quick search and found this as reference:

No warning whatsoever. Was cruising at about 25mph downtown, top down, second gear loafing when the most god-awful metal-against-metal sound I've ever heard erupted from the back.
I shut it down and had it trailered to my tech. The engine grenaded when the chain broke and the engine was toast. Nothing but chunks of metal in the pan.
Sold it to my techie for $4500 as a roller.
The car was in my family since new and perfectly maintained all its life. No warning, just utter and complete destruction.
Just doing the standard replacement LN kit. “The Solution” would be nice but realistically it will be a long time before I put another 75,000 miles on this car, so will just replace the bearing when I do a clutch again.
Yes I know! I’m being a poor new member of this group but will correct that. Been on a week-long business trip to told the shop they could take their time on the RMS, clutch and IMS bearing. Should be picking it up this coming Friday and will post pictures! Not sure if i can get the seat fixed by then or not but all the other (minor) cosmetics should be good. Most are nothing a good wax and detail won’t fix.
I was fortunate enough to find the remains of a chain roller when I dropped the sump cover for inspection soon after I purchased my 996. I sent it off to Flat6 Innovations to replace the chains and do some other work on it. Jake said I was very lucky that I decided to drop the sump to inspect. When they pulled them, *BOTH chains had a single roller missing. My Carrera had only 44,000 miles on it.
Jake said he's seen these fail at as low as 7000 miles. He attributes this to inferior manufacturing. He has better quality replacement chains that he can replace w/o an engine teardown.
Wow. That is some kind of lucky. Will definitely have my Indy look carefully for chunks of stuff in the sump (I think he would anyway).
Had a few minor items not show up, so may not have it ready by Friday. That means I may not be able to play with my new car until after Christmas. Since I have to drive it from Chicago area to Columbus this time of year I will have to watch the weather carefully.
